y/n was existed as they and Joe were going to close the store early and go mini golfing as a fun father child valentines day outing. Every year around Valentine's Day the two close down early and go have fun, have a break from the store and have fun with fun memories. Normally they would close the store at six and go home at six thirty. But for their yearly Valentines day outing the two would leave at 3:30
"hey y/n can you put away some of these plushies while i wrap a few thing and hopefully we can take off"
y/n grabbed the cart filled with soft toys "sure" they said rolling off to the plushie section.
They took the teddy bears and lined each one up on the round purple shelf. Then they strolled over to the green shelf to put away various fruit and animal plush toys.
“Almost done” they said, heading down to the Toy Aisle to put away the last batch.
"...and...last...one" y/n stud up pushing the cart back to their dad at the front but as soon as they got there there was a huge influx of people waiting in line and shopping. y/n tilted their head in confusion
"what happened? there were like three people in here" they asked their dad
"i guess we have a rush, let's just ride this out then we can go but it will be later than expected" Joe replied while putting books into a bag.
"can you get more bows, wrapping paper and tissue paper from the back?" he asked
"sure" y/n replied walking off taking a basket with them.
After walking past the different isles they approached the back they shoved everything into the basket making it overflow with supplies hoping i'd be enough.
"I hope we leave soon" They whispered to themselves, turning around to the front. As y/n approached the counter the amount of people in the store only grew. They put the basket onto the counter
"here you go" they said
"thanks sweet heart" he said, wrapping a baseball bat. as the clock struck 3:00 y/n was still hopeful they'd go but a small lingering feeling knew they would have to go another day.
By the time it was 3:45 there were a bunch of customers who came in and out of the store buying presents left and right. It had gotten to a point that all y/n did was get more gift supplies for Joe.
By 4:15 they tried to stay hopeful by thinking of all the fun they'd have in a little while. But their smiles had almost faded at that point as it was now 4:40.
Joe took notice to y/n’s sad and disappointed face that pained him to see. He looked at the amount of people in the store and looked at the time and decided to text his older brother to ask Steve if he could take over for him
Joe: Hey steve! the present store has a lot of unexpected last minute shoppers. Can you go out with them while I handle things over here?
Steve: sure! i'd love to see them for a bit i have a small valentines gift for them be there soon
"So change of plans your uncle Steve will be going with you while ill stay here" Joe said to y/n who was back with a third round of supplies
"okay" they said. They felt a mix of disappointment but relief as they tried to force a smile and they got their bag and things waiting to leave.
"ill make it up to you i promise" Joe stresses
After waiting for a bit and getting two more rounds of wrapping paper ribbons and bows Steve walked in
"hello joe hello y/n are you ready?"
"yep" they said putting down some supplies
"ill pick them up when i get off later" the two left the busy store.
“So what did you and your dad have planned?” Steve asked
“Mini golfing” they replied
“Did you still want to do that?” Steve asked
“Uhh…not really” y/n replied
“So what do you want to do then?” Steve asked
“Umm…i dont…know” y/n replied
Steve paused for a moment as the two walked down the street.
“Hmm…” “want to go get something to eat? Im kinda hungary” said steve
“sure “ y/n replied as the two walked over to a diner.
When the two arrived at the restaurant the two sat down in a booth by a window. Steve shifted through the menu while y/n just looked at the drinks and sides.
“Everything looks good huh?” Steve asked
“Yea it does” they replied “i just remembered i have a card for you” y/n said as they reached into their bag and handed their uncle a red envelope.
“Oh wow thanks y/n” he smiled. He peeled open the envelope to reveal a red sparkly card.
“It's really nice, did you make it yourself?”
“Yea”
“You did a really good job”
“Thanks”
Soon afterwards the two got their food y/n got themselves a l/s and l/d just for a bit of a snack. After a while Steve took a notice to y/n’s unusual quietness
“Hey y/n are you ok?” Steve asked gently
“I guess im just disappointed we didnt go out” y/n replied
“Oh i see” he said
“This isnt the first time its happened so im not surprised” they said
“Does your dad ever make it up to you for failed plans ?” he asked
“Yea some times i just wish people didn't buy things last minute or the store wasn't as busy some times so we aren't always there” they replied
“I'm sorry, what does he do to make it up to you?” he asked
“Sometimes we do things when we get home from the store or he buys me something if he doesn't reschedule" they replied. The two finished up their food and got the bill and as they got up to leave Steve asked
“Is there anything you want to do?”
“Not really” they answered
“Okay, let's go to my agency. I have a valentine's basket for you” he said as the two left the diner.
As the two arrived at Steve’s detective office y/n tossed their bag to the side and sat down on a chair while steve took off his coat.
“Ill be right back with your basket” Steve said walking off. y/n looked at the clock as it read 6:00
“He should be here soon” y/n thought to themselves.
Just then Steve came back with a small red basket
“Here I hope you like it,” he said. The basket had candies, chocolates, a card and a keychain.
“Thanks, I love it,” they said, hugging their uncle.
“You're welcome, I also made one for your dad too” he said.
A few moments later Joe arrived early
“Hey steve hey y/n did you two have a good time?” he asked
“Yea” they replied
“Yea oh have something for you” Steve said passing Joe a small red basket that matched y/n
“I got you y/n and josh valentines baskets” he said
“Wow thanks I also got you a card” Joe said, passing his brother a hand made card. The two brothers talked for a bit catching up on each other's recent events like Steve's cases and Joe's store activities while y/n was off to the side eating some of their candy.
