Work Text:

Jake yawned, it was the seventh yawn Raymond heard from him today and it was only 11 am. He saw Jacob more often tired than his other detectives but never this tired and he had a feeling something was wrong. “Jacob? Come to my office.” Jake looked up, tired at first but he quickly played it off, “Alrighty Cap-i-tan.”

Jake walked into his office, “Close the door and take a seat.” Jake looked a bit confused but did as he said.

"Somthin’ wrong Capt’n?”

“Yes, I noticed you have been very tired today.” Jake looked like a kid who’d been caught doing something he wasn’t supposed to do.

“Whaaat? No, I'm as awake as any human can be.” Jake said but right after that he let out another yawn.

“You don’t have to talk to me about it, but know that I am always there for you if you do.” Jake stayed silent not knowing how to respond. “You can take a nap on my couch.” Raymond said, gesturing to the couch in his office. “It will do you good to get some rest.” Jake tried to protest but was immediately cut off, “I insist, I’d like all of my detectives to be well rested while they are working and clearly you’re not.”

“Okay fine but only because you made me.” Jake said with annoyance but it had no bite. He collapsed on the couch and before Raymond knew it Jake had already fallen asleep. He collected a blanket out of a cabinet and gently draped it over Jake. He didn’t know why Jake was so tired, he hadn’t even had the energy to make a joke about it. Raymond couldn’t deny he wasn’t worried, but he wasn’t going to force Jacob to tell him. For now, he will just let him rest.

Jake was tired, really tired. There were other times when he stayed awake longer than he has now but he is more tired than those times before. It’s really his own fault though, he thought while letting out a yawn.

When he read the message his father sent he couldn’t help but feel hopeful. He never hung out with his father much when he was younger and he now knows his father was kind of a jackass. But he was still his father and Jake was secretly, and maybe even without knowing himself, still waiting for his fathers approval and hearing him say he was proud of him. So when Jake read his father’s message telling him he was in town and would drop by at his place at around 10, Jake made sure he was there. He even went home early that night, just to be sure.

But Jake had waited, and waited, and waited, but his father never came. So when Jake looked at the clock and it was 5 pm and his father was still not there, he gave up. But he didn’t fall asleep, he couldn’t, not with all those thoughts in his head. Telling him he wasn’t good enough, and he would never be good enough. Why would his dad come back for him, it’s not like he was worth the trouble. And then suddenly his alarm went off and he had to leave for work.

So here he was, super tired and with zero focus. Though he thought he was covering it up pretty well, except he wasn’t. The captain had called him in his office, informed him that it was obvious that he was tired and then let him sleep on his couch. And Jake did, he’d actually never fallen asleep that fast. But he was awake now, he still had his eyes closed, contemplating what to do now. What time would it be? For how long did he sleep? He didn’t know. He carefully opened his eyes and saw Captain Holt doing some paperwork. He got up and a blanket fell off of him, when did that get there?

“Good afternoon,” Holt said, “I hope you feel a bit more rested.”

Jake nodded, “Thanks for letting me sleep on your couch.” He said awkwardly, not really knowing what else to say.

“Jacob, I can see something happened and I don’t know what, but like I said earlier, I am always here for you if you want to talk to me.” Jake nodded again and a small smile appeared on his face. He didn’t fully believe it yet but maybe, he was worth the trouble.
