Work Text:
Despite Home technically having a mailbox, they don't really get sent letters.
Because how would he really even read them? It can't just pick them up and open it like the other neighbors could. Nor would he be able to send a letter back, since it can't write one without hands.
It wasn't a big deal, she sees their friends almost everyday. But sometimes when Wally got letters, it couldn't help but wish they could open one as well. The very thought that someone would take the time and effort to write another a specific letter, is so very nice.
Still, Wally read them all his letters. So at least he can live by vicariously.
But as today Wally heads to the mail box, he looks more excited than usual in their opinion. Maybe he was expecting a delivery? Although he hadn't mentioned anything like he usually does.
After a moment of looking through the mail, he walks back over to her, and declares with a bright grin. "You got a letter Home!"
It's eyes widened in shock. Did he really? How? Who would even send one, knowing he can't really sent one in return?
Wally hops closer bringing the letter up so they could see it better. "Do you want me to open it for you?"
It noticeably doesn't have any name written on it besides Home's own. Which is a bit odd. But it was also written in very familiar handwriting. So perhaps he just forgot to add it.
He swings the door, causing a cheek, for a Yes.
Wally brightens, before starting to open it.
"Oh! It's picture with stickers!" he exclaimed, before turning it around to face them to see it herself.
Huh, that's not what he was expecting. But that's also one of the best parts about getting letters, you didn't know what was going to be in it.
And it looks very nice and fun! There were many flower stickers all over the bottom, and a lot of clouds and rainbows at the top. With three big trees ones in the middle.
They swing the door back and forth in glee.
Wally brightens even more. "Yes, Isn't it the most?" he agrees, before adding. "I wonder who send it?"
Oh? It raised a brow in slight suspicion.
That handwriting was unmistakably Wally's. Why wasn't he telling them it was from him? Maybe unless someone else had made the letter, and forgot to add any name to it, so Wally added it himself. But wouldn't he still know who send it?
Nevertheless, he must have his reasons. So it just swings the door once again, insisting that he put it on the fridge. As that's the highest honor for any paper creative project.
"Oh! That's a good idea!" Wally declares as he walks back inside. Before ending up in the kitchen, taking one of the magnets to hang it up with the many drawings.
"Picture perfect! Ha, ha, ha." he jokes.
And It walls shake as they chuckle along. So silly.
-
While it had assumed it'd just be the one letter, the next day Wally hops up to him with a bright grin, lifting another letter up for them to see.
"You got another letter Home!"
It still only had Home's name, but it was written in Wally's handwriting once again.
They give a squeak from the door in excitement. Wondering what Wally sent this time, and if he'll tell him it's from him now.
"Do you want me to open it again?" he asks. and there's another squeak for yes.
He opens it, before turning it around to face her again.
It's a drawing of Home! With many colorful flowers all around it, and the sun shining brightly enough at the top, that it needed sunglasses in said drawing.
'So pretty!' It exclaimed with joy.
"It is isn't it?" he says very softly.
'Wonder who sending them.' They tap out with soft knocks from the shutter, just to see what he'd say. As now it was even more clear that this one is from him. It'd know the art anywhere.
Wally hummed in thought. "Maybe you have a secret admirer." he suggests. "Barnaby said a secret admirers want to show you appreciation, but want to keep it a secret either because they're shy, or want to have the fun of the mystery."
Now that's a thought, and it can only assume that is the case with the other saying it himself. But both letters were pretty clearly from Wally himself too. So maybe it's more of a not so secret admirer then anything. Though it doesn't see why he'd be shy to give them anything. So while it wasn't really a mystery either, It was still very sweet. And it's the thought that counts.
Besides, Wally was clearly having fun sending them too, so it doesn't want to ruin the fun by telling him it knows he's sending them.
So it swings the door, with a loud squeak in agreement.
Before there's another creek, as she insists he puts it on the fridge again, with the other letter.
And Wally brightens, before heading over to do just that.
-
This time he was only really guessing it might get another letter. And the thought that she actually would, was very exciting.
And as Wally goes to the mailbox, he once again declared that there's one for them.
"You have another letter Home!" And his own excitement was very clear too. "Do you want me to read it?"
Huh, interesting how this time he said 'read it.' As both the days before he said 'open it' Almost as if he already knew what was inside each letter or something...
Still, it swings the door as Yes.
So he opens it, before reading it.
"Hello Home. I 'm sending this to say you always brighten my days. Every time I see apples, I think of your red walls, and wonder if you'd want a fresh apple to share too. From a friend!"
Oh. That's so very sweet!
It gives a creek as a Awww.
And Wally's gets a soft smile.
It really wants to say thank you, and it knows just the way how.
"Do you want me to put it with the others?" he now asks.
There's a Immediate Yes.
And as he adds it to the fridge. They tap out with soft knocks from the shutter.
'Can you help me write a letter too?'
"Oh!" Wally's eyes widened. "You want to write a letter back?" he gets very slight nervousness at this idea.
Still, they give another swing of the door for Yes.
And while the other still seem hesitant, he goes and sits at his desk with all the papers and crayons. Setting them up to write. "Okay Home, what do you want to say?"
It gives soft taps with the shutter.
'The letters are so very lovely. I appreciate them more than I could ever say. Thank you Wally.'
And as Wally finished the last letter of 'you' he makes a quiet squeal in surprise and realization.
"How did you know I was sending them Home?" he asks in utter confusion.
And Home walls shake as it chuckles.
Before tapping out. 'Who else would send such lovely letters?'
Blush dusted Wally's face. As he says bashfully. "I'm glad you liked them."
Fondness fills them. Before adding. 'Why didn't you just say it was you?'
He hummed in thought. "I thought it'd be more fun for you, to think up who was sending them."
Just as it thought. 'It was fun.' tapped out once again. And it was fun! Even if he knew it was Wally the whole time.
"Is it okay if I still send more letters? Even though you know it's me?"
The door swings in a Immediate 'Yes. Absolutely. They'd love that.
And Wally brightens at this. "Thank you for your letter too Home!"
Oh! Right! Technically she did give him a letter too.
Wally gets up, and heads to the kitchen. Putting the new letter on the fridge along with the three he had sent.
And now their own face wall covers with blush. It's such a simple thing really. But they never had the chance to have anything added to the fridge before.
"Now it really is picture perfect!" he declared joyfully.
And it swings the shutter in agreement. Though it had always been perfect to them, covered in Wally's drawings.
