just desserts

Summary:

A series of unfortunate incidents leaves Fox in the medbay. He's just one of many troopers, but he thinks he came off better than the rest of them. He'd take coughing up flowers over any of that other stuff, no hesitation.

Notes:

written for the febuwhump prompt: hanahaki, but i'll level with you, i forgot that i was supposed to be writing whump at around the fourth paragraph and it all went downhill from there

warnings: angst scenarios treated as crack, non-explicit discussion of sex, disappointing lack of actual accurate hanahaki

THERE ARE HORRIFIC AND ABRUPT TONE SHIFTS THROUGHOUT THIS FIC this is your only warning, i had too much fun writing crack and forgot that i was meant to be writing this prompt for a whump event.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Fox would have thought, months ago, that it would be the senators who treated vode worse than the dirt under their boots who Fox would have hated working with the most. Senators who considered them less-than sentient, and went out of their way to let them know it at every turn.

But, no.

No, instead it was senators like Senator Rosan, who had a small menagerie of almost-illegal "pets" that she chose to escort her around for most of the day, snapping at any vod who passed, who really made Fox's life hell. Or more relevantly, Senator S'raliik, who possessed a vast collection of plants that they would sometimes choose to display in their private office… plants that were occasionally "accidently" toxic to humans (something that they got away with given that they were not human themselves, and used the excuse that they 'simply forgot about these things').

Toxic to humans or worse, as Fox had then quickly discovered.

One vod had almost been eaten alive by one apparently carnivorous plant. Fox had only just arrived in time to drag them back out of the thing's maw by their boots, and had almost fallen foul of the thing himself.

Naively, Fox at the time had hoped that this would be the worst thing he witnessed as a result of the senator's collection.

He had been quickly proved wrong when he'd walked into the office one day and walked in on two vod going at it, armour and underclothes discarded, not a care in the galaxy for who might have walked through the door.

Afterwards the medics had come to the conclusion that it had been something in the air that had hindered their decision-making skills, some kind of pollen from one of the plants that they must have gotten a bit too close to, but at the time Fox had not had any such explanation and had been left to try and knock some sense into the two of them before they could make any more seemingly insane decisions.

He had apologised to them afterwards for stunning them, but privately didn't think he could fault his gut instinct. He didn't care what other vod got up to in their spare time, but personally he did not want any part in it thank you very much.

(Not because he didn't have any game, Thire, thank you. Fox was just a busy man. And why would he want to spend what little free time he had shagging, when he could be spending it sleeping?)

The incidents didn't stop there, however.

Another group had confiscated a plant that had left any of them who had come into contact with it unable to speak anything but the truth. That had been a nightmare, until Fox had realised that he could use their lack of inhibition to finally get to the bottom of the contraband smuggling ring that had been driving him insane for the past few weeks. Thorn had tried to guilt-trip him about his underhanded methods afterwards, but Fox had waved him off. He was only fighting as dirty as they were.

Besides, it wasn't as if he was looking to shut it down. It was just irritating for every vod to clam up about it whenever he asked. Fox had just wanted in.

Of course, now, he faced his karmic retribution. His just desserts, quite literally as it were.

Fox stared down at his plate, where a small cloud of petals had just landed. Petals that had appeared when he had coughed. Petals that could have only come from his mouth, his lungs.

And petals that were slowly dissolving into his pudding, the only highlight of his day.

It was such a surreal thing, that for a moment it was the ruined dessert that bothered him the most. Then, Fox sighed, braced himself, and got up to go to the medbay.

He should have known he was being overconfident. Nobody had gotten out of Senator S'raliik's office recently without being involved with some kind of incident, usually to the detriment of their health. Why should Fox be any luckier than his fellow men?

Notes:

i wanted to write a non-traditional hanahaki fic, or at least something with body-horror as an emphasis, but i was really struggling with it and couldn't figure out an angle. this was the result of me getting distracted. oh yeah, i also wanted to put some aroace rep in there on valentine's day but only the ace part ended up being relevant.

also while i was pondering non-romantic takes on hanahaki i remembered that this fic exists already, i would definitely recommend it!
