Summary:

The violin has always been difficult for him to master.

Notes:

Day 7: Any AU

Hey all! I wanted to end this week with one of my favorite pairings, Obito/Tobi (the zetsu) because honestly I just adore this pair very much. And what better way than in an Orchestra au? ^^ I had a great time writing for this week, and I really look forwards to writing for next year.

Not beta read, but I hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

The violin has always been difficult for him to master.

Granted, there was no doubt he worked hard in order to change that; he practiced for hours until his fingers were rough and sore from pressing down on strings, when the hairs of his bow started to break with each pull and push to make that music. It has gotten to the point he found himself waking up with a sore neck and arm.

He found himself running his thumb over the callouses of his fingers every time he was getting anxious about a performance. There was no question he was good at playing it; the issue was he could hear every little mistake even if it could be hidden under the sound of his fellow musicians when out under the lights.

Obito did not just want to be good at violin; he wanted to be the best at it, yet he felt like there was some sort of block between him and getting to the level of skill he desired.

Tonight was a rare rest night as he sits in his apartment; even if he wasn’t playing his violin though it did not mean he wasn’t listening to the music for the upcoming concert. He sat calmly on the couch and looked down at the  sheets of music on the coffee table before him.

He moved his right hand as if he was holding the violin despite having put it back in its case for tonight–

“Obibi~”

He jumped sending the sheet music flying up in the air, “Fuck!”

Behind him, holding take away in one hand, and his cello case in the other was his long time boyfriend Tobi. The cellist hummed as he put his instrument down; wearing an eye patch over his left eye. There was scar tissue along his left cheek from a car accident when he was a boy that Obito made a point to kiss over every night they’re in bed. He had soft, light brown hair that was always messy and skin like porcelain; some joke he might be a vampire since his skin didn’t tan. .

“Sorry, were you listening to the score again?” Tobi puts the take away down, the scent of thai dumpling soup filling the air as he then crouches down to pick up the papers on the ground, “You’ve been doing a lot of that lately you know…maybe you should stop for the night? It is your rest day after all.”

He almost snaps at him for even suggesting that. Unlike him…Tobi had such a natural talent for playing the cello. When he played it actually made people stop to watch him rather than get lost in the symphony they were a part of. He just had this energy that many would kill for…

Instead Obito sighed and pressed pause on the I-pad he used to play the music, “...I guess I got a little too into it. I wanted to at least try to memorize the tempo and marks where I come back in with the others.”

“Obibi. My sweet, talented, Obibi…” Tobi gently held his hands and pats over his sore fingers gently, “...I love you and I think it’s good you’re passionate about the violin. But if you don’t let your poor body rest, you’re just gonna give yourself muscle cramps and potential carpal tunnel.”

He can’t help but snort and smile, completely relaxing in the other’s hands as he closed his eyes and leaned into the gentle hold. It was almost strange how easily Tobi was able to get him to let go for a moment. To give into his need for food and rest as he’s held so sweetly by the other.

Obito looked up at Tobi, watching as he pulled out their dinner and opened the container of Obito’s favorite soup.

“Want me to feed it to you?” Tobi teased him softly with a bright smile, “I can if you’d like, give your poor hands and arms a break.”

A soft laugh left Obito, “You certainly know how to make me feel like a prince…”

“You work hard and deserve special treatment now hush and enjoy thai dumpling soup goodness,” Tobi pulled out the good chopsticks and gathered up a bunch of noodles and began to feed his boyfriend of two years.

Obito ate without fuss and just takes in the peaceful moment of eating his favorite food with his favorite person.

No one can quite understand how the violinist and the cellist worked. During classes and practice hours, Obito was laser focused to the point it felt like he was in his own world, never responding to anyone else when in that head space. Meanwhile no one really knows when Tobi practices. It sometimes felt he just needed to read music once and he’s good to go, and he honestly used to spend most of his free time alone despite being such a friendly person.

What does someone with such natural talent see in someone like me?

He ate one of the dumplings as this thought filled his head. It’s one question he’s seemed to always struggle with despite how happy he was with him.

Tobi tilted his head, his uncovered hazel eye softened at him, “You know I’m with you for you Obibi, right? Not for the music.”

His cheeks flush a moment and he averted his gaze, “...I just…you’re just amazing and could have anyone…seriously anyone else with more talent than me…”

A soft hum left Tobi, “I don’t want anyone else. I want you, Obito. You’re an amazing musician and work harder than anyone else…you’re also incredibly funny, have a big sweet tooth, enjoy winter time most and you always make me smile…”

The blush on his face darkens at Tobi’s sweet words, smiling slowly and averting his gaze. He knows Tobi would never lie to him. Has never lied to him in all this time they have been a couple. He loved that the other wasn’t afraid to be open and warm with him even in public spaces where others may see.

He hopes and prays that never changes
