The Tides That Bind Us

Summary:

Years ago, Buggy mocked and attempted to rob a powerful sea entity, a sea dragon spirit. In retaliation, the being cursed him and his entire crew.

The curse binds them to the sea but not as free sailors. The ocean itself resists them, storms follow, compasses fail, sea kings stalk them.

The only loophole?

“The curse may be undone if the sea gives willingly what was taken in greed.”

Buggy, of course, doesn’t understand what that means.

Years later, the crew raids a royal merfolk convoy and takes a “bargained offering” named Isolde Tideborne, princess of the merfolk, and whom they believe may be valuable leverage.

They don’t realize however, she is the key.

Chapter Text

Chapter One: The beginning

The sea had gone quiet, not calm, not peaceful, quiet.

It was the kind of silence that presses against the ears and warns creatures older than men to flee.

But the Big Top crew were not known for caution.

“Treasure doesn’t guard itself with silence,” one pirate muttered.

At the bow, a red nose gleaming beneath the filtered blue light of the depths, there stood the infamous pirate, Buggy the Clown.

His grin was wide, too wide “You hear that?” he declared theatrically “That’s the sound of gold begging to be liberated!”

Behind him, the crew exchanged uneasy glances.

The trench yawned below them like the mouth of some slumbering god. Coral formations twisted unnaturally. Black stone jutted from the seabed in deliberate arches.

It wasn’t natural, It was constructed.

It was a shrine.

At its center, half buried in the sand and glowing faintly beneath centuries of silt, stood a pillar of obsidian carved with spirals and ancient script. Embedded within it were gemstones, huge ones. Sapphires that shimmered like trapped storms.

Buggy’s eyes glittered brighter than the stones.

“Well,” he scoffed, hopping lightly from the railing to the lowered submersible platform “If someone wanted it protected, they should’ve put up a sign.”

“There are signs, Captain,” one of the crew whispered.

The coral around the shrine was etched, warnings, with symbols that looked older than the maps themselves.

Buggy waved a dismissive hand “Decorative squiggles. I’ve seen worse.”

He approached the pillar where up close, the air felt heavier. The water thrummed faintly against the hull and something ancient stirred far below.

Buggy planted a boot against the obsidian “Overgrown sea décor,” he muttered, jamming a dagger beneath one of the gemstones. “And I hate clutter.”

The first stone came loose with a crack and immediately the ocean split open. However, the trench did not shake, it parted as if something colossal had uncoiled.

The water temperature dropped instantly, the light dimmed.

A sound rose, not a roar but a tectonic groan.

Something immense ascended from the black. Eyes like molten suns opened in the dark. Scales of obsidian etched with glowing fractures slid past the ship’s hull.

The already frightened crew members froze, weapons slipped from numb hands.

The dragon’s head rose level with the deck. It was massive but regal. It was ancient beyond comprehension.

Its voice did not echo through air, it vibrated through bone “You mock what you do not understand.”

Buggy swallowed hard, a bead of sweat running down his temple, but his pride rose faster than his fear “You’re blocking my treasure,” he snapped, forcing a laugh. “So unless you’re planning to split it fifty fifty...”

The dragon’s gaze sharpened, the sea tightened.

“You who steal from sacred ground,” it intoned, “shall be denied what you covet most.”

Buggy rolled his eyes “Oh please. Is this the part where you breathe fire dramatically? Because I’ve got...”

The dragon’s eyes flared, the ocean surged upward, every crew member was slammed to their knees as an invisible pressure crushed the air from their lungs.

“You who mock the sea,” the dragon continued, voice like a grinding stone, “shall never claim the land.”

A mark burned across Buggy’s ankles. He screamed, not theatrically, but genuinely as Coral like veins spread briefly beneath his skin before fading.

“The sea shall bear you,” the dragon decreed, “but never release you.”

Buggy forced himself upright, shaking, furious “You think I need land?” he spat. “I’m a pirate! The sea’s mine!”

The dragon’s massive head lowered until molten gold eyes met his “Arrogance is a fragile crown.”

The trench darkened again, the dragon began to sink back into shadow, but its final words lingered like a law etched into the world itself.

“When the sea gives willingly what pride once stole, the chains shall break.”

Then it vanished. The pressure lifted, the ocean returned to motion.

The crew scrambled to their feet in panicked confusion.

Buggy laughed a little too loudly “See? Overgrown sea snake with a superiority complex! We’re fine!”

They were not.

Days later, when they reached the nearest island, Buggy leapt from the gangplank with theatrical flair.

The moment his foot touched sand...Agony. White hot agony.

Coral crystal spread from his heel upward and he let a pained howl and his crew dragged him back to the deck as the petrification receded the instant he left land.

Silence fell amonst the crew.

The island festival music drifted faintly over the water, close and untouchable.

Buggy stared at the shoreline and for once? He did not laugh.

Far below, in the abyss where moonlight never reached, ancient golden eyes opened once more.

In a distant royal court beneath shimmering waters, a princess with coral pink hair stirred uneasily in her sleep, unaware that the tide of her fate had already begun to turn.
