Work Text:
“I hope you’re doing something actually fun, for once… oh, well. I should’ve known you wouldn’t be” Sebastian can hear Blaine huffing at that, a bit muffled by the sound the bed makes once he’s thrown himself on top of it. He bounces back a tiny bit, messing with the cushions, and is busy rearranging them so they support his head when he sees the shorter boy stand up from his desk and going to close his door “. Oh… you want privacy?”
“Get your mind off the gutter” Blaine replies, ignoring the soft slap Sebastian gives to his butt as he passes by, as he returns to his desk.
“You’re no fun” Sebastian frowns, sitting up.
“Yeah, I thought you’d established that already” Blaine murmurs, not really looking at him. To annoy him, mostly. Sebastian knows his tactics too well.
“Seriously now, though. What are you doing?”
“What does it look like I’m doing?”
“I don’t know” Sebastian shrugs “. Warblers strategy?”
“I wish” Blaine sighs “. Wes won’t let me, and I have great ideas”
“Sure you do, Killer”
“I am doing Algebra instead” the shorter continues, very much ignoring him “. I have to start on my history essay right after this, too”
“So, homework. The less fun thing to do in the world”
“Remind me again of what you said during our first conversation… were you academically inclined, or…?”
“Okay, shut up” Sebastian mumbles, very much not blushing. So, what? He’d been trying to impress Blaine, and some of what he’d heard of him was that he was at the top of all his classes “. Besides, I am done with my homework, which technically puts me above you academically”
“My ass-“
“A fantastic one at that”
“-you are. Besides “he says, finally turning around to look at Sebastian… even if he does so looking truly unimpressed “. I know for a fact you only had French today. Am I supposed to be impressed you’re done with that?”
“You might have a point” Sebastian admits, tilting his head “. That homework was a joke”
“I still don’t get why they let you take that class” Blaine says, a bit under his breath “. It’s so unfair” he adds, turning around again.
“Yeah, well” the taller of the two shrugs “. I also have more time than you do, so. I still don’t know how you manage to be in hundreds of clubs”
“Hyperbole”
“I am bored, Blaine” Sebastian says, fully ignoring him.
“Good for you, kid. I am not”
“Right… so… does that mean you don’t wanna make out for a while?” He asks, letting a playful smile bloom on his face. Blaine turns at that, still looking thoroughly unimpressed. This time, the blush slowly spreading on his cheeks makes the whole look less effective.
“Sebastian”
“What?” Sebastian asks, innocently, “. It’s an honest question”
“And, as I said, I am doing homework” Blaine insists, cutting Sebastian off when he sees he’s opening his mouth to argue “. Also… is this the only reason you came to see me?”
Sebastian rolls his eyes hard at that; so much so, he gets dizzy for a second. Ignoring that, and Blaine’s own eyeroll at his dramatics, he throws a pillow at the other boy, not hitting him yet being hit back.
“Of course not. I also missed you” he says, as smoothly as he can. It works, because Blaine is blushing that pretty shade of red Sebastian has yet to see anywhere else, sticking his tongue out at him “. If we make out now I can definitely help you with your homework later” Sebastian adds, because, as he’s taken to discover, he’s willing to step on new levels of embarassment and pathetic for one Blaine Anderson.
Blaine, who at his words pretends to think for a solid ten seconds, even putting a finger on his chin and trying to hide his smile. Finally, he leaves his desk and goes to sit on Sebastian’s lap in record time, so fast and so smoothly that the taller boy can’t help but feel a bit impressed. And very attracted to that, especially so when Blaine leans down to capture his lips, igniting all types of fireworks inside Sebastian.
“You have amazing ideas sometimes” he murmurs, kissing his cheek once before he kisses him again. Sebastian smiles against his lips, nips the lower one for a moment, and forces his own head back, hitting the wall with a soft thud.
“Are you using me for my brain, Anderson?”
Blaine recoils at that, opening his mouth in feigned surprise. It is so endearing, and so ridiculous, and Sebastian shouldn’t find it cute (he wouldn’t have had those thoughts a year ago, that’s for sure), but he does.
“How have you found out?” Blaine asks, pulling all the dramatics, “. I thought I was so subtle”
“Oh my God” Sebastian laughs, bringing the shorter boy closer to him and maneuvering so he’s lying on top of Blaine “. Anderson, you’re everything but subtle”
“Look who’s talking”
“Shut up” Sebastian says, enunciating it with a kiss “. Now, if you want me to do your homework, I sure recall giving you a condition…”
“And I am the one who’s not subtle” Blaine murmurs, but he still kisses him so. Sebastian considers it a success.
He even does so twenty minutes later, when Blaine is sitting cross-legged on his bed, reading a book, and he’s hunched over his homework, doing, of course, algebra exercises. He continues to do so even five seconds later, when Jeff barges into the room like a small hurricane, stopping for a second at the sight before him and barking out a laugh.
“Of course, I should’ve known I’d find Smythe doubling down to you again” he says to Blaine, ignoring Sebastian’s middle finger and letting himself fall on top of his bed “. Is he doing your homework again?”
“Fuck off, Sterling”
“I don’t know how you do it” Jeff says to Blaine, ignoring Sebastian once more “. How do you always manage to convince Sebastian, of all people, to do your homework?”
“What can I say?” Blaine shrugs, sneaking a glance at Sebastian”, I have my ways”
“Sure you do, buddy” Jeff nods, pushing himself up and sitting criss-crossed on his bed in a mirror of Blaine “. So, I came to talk to you, actually”
“I am not leaving”
“Then feel free to tune me out, but I am talking”
Sebastian is actually so close to throwing Blaine’s favorite pen at him, barely stopping himself because, well, it is Blaine’s favorite pen and, also, he doesn’t want Jeff to think he has the power to annoy him. Even when he very much does - especially so because he’s Blaine’s roommate and, for some fucking reason, loves to spend time in their shared dorm.
“What did you wanna tell me?” Blaine intervenes then, always the peace-maker of any room he finds himself in. Jeff perks up at that because, as Sebastian has taken to notice, Blaine just has that power over people. For once, he’s not ashamed to include himself in that one.
“Oh, yeah. So, I was in a study group, the one I did tell you you should come to, and Omar approached me. You know who Omar is, right?”
“Environmental club, no? He asked me to join at the beginning of the year”
“Waste of time, if you ask me”
“No one was asking you, Smythe” Jeff says, barely hiding a snort “. Also, the environment is important”
“So is silence, and yet, since you came in here…”
“Should I remind you this is my dorm?”
Blaine has other pens. An eraser, too. It will bounce off of Jeff’s head beautifully, Sebastian is sure of that.
“What did Omar ask you?” Blaine asks, trying once more to rein things in “. Does he want you for his club? Because-“
“Yes, I know, Regionals aren’t that far off, and I need to focus” Jeff interrupts him, not ungently “. God, you talk like Wes. And also, no, he didn’t ask me that. He actually asked me about you”
“About me” Blaine repeats, just around the same time Sebastian decides to stop pretending he’s doing actual work, and turns around, watching as the shorter boy arches an eyebrow “. Why?”
“Well, he knows we’re roommates” Jeff explains “, and that we are tight. Warblers, brothers, and all that”
“Right” Blaine nods, amused “. So? Why did he ask you about me?”
“Like you don’t know” Jeff snorts “. He was interested in you, dude. He wanted to know if you’d be interested or free to purchase something with him”
“What a transactional way of putting it” Sebastian intervenes, trying very hard to ignore the weird pressure he’s started feeling in the middle of his chest. Blaine glances at him for a second, and Jeff throws a middle finger at him, eyes still locked on Blaine’s.
“Anyway, I promised I’d ask. So…”
“So…”
“Dude” Jeff groans, “. Are you gonna make me ask?” He asks, only to be met with silence. He throws his head back at that, hitting it hard enough against the wall that the next-door student hits it back in protest “. The things I do for you… okay, fine. Blaine, will you go out with Omar Rahman?”
Blaine’s response is almost immediate “. No. Thanks, but no”
“Oh my God” Jeff groans, barely able to stop himself from hitting the wall once more “. Are you serious?”
“I’m not interested” Blaine shrugs “. He seems nice, but… I’m just not interested”
“Blaine. Blaine. He’s hot in a way even I can see. How can you not be interested?”
“Because I’m not” Blaine says, shrugging once more.
“Dude, this is the twentieth time we have this conversation” the blond complains “. You are never interested”
“I-“
“And Omar is really nice. Very solid dude. You could at least try, you know. Go out with him, see if you click. You won’t fully know there is no interest there if you don’t at least try”
“Jeff” Blaine sighs and, for a terrifying moment, Sebastian thinks maybe Jeff has gotten to him. That maybe he’s won him over, that maybe he likes the idea of dating Omar. But then Blaine sneaks another glance at him, and he can breathe again “. I appreciate you wanting me to be happy, and I appreciate Omar’s intentions and interest, but… not this time, okay?”
Jeff’s sigh can be heard even over the way Sebastian’s heartbeat sounds in his ears.
*
See, here is the thing: Sebastian really likes Blaine. He’d done so since his first day at Dalton, when he’d been sure transferring mid-year would kill him socially. John (or, as he’d later on re-introduced himself, Beat) had been reassuring, telling him that no one cared about those things at Dalton, how it didn’t matter when you arrived there, just that you did. He’d backed up his argument by mentioning Blaine Anderson, who’d transferred not too long before Sebastian and already had all of the school eating from his hand. Sebastian had been immediately intrigued by it and, when John had later on introduced him to Blaine, he’d been gone on the spot. Pathetically so.
Being his friend had come so easily to him, to them. They understood each other in ways no one else did, and Blaine was the only one who could understand his bitchy side and not be offended by it. He’d been the only one to get his soft side, too. They had grown close in no time, and so, in Sebastian’s mind, their relationship had been inevitable. Even when he’d been a bit nervous about it, he’d at least known that. Just like he knows it is more complicated than he’d initially thought it would be. His fault, truly, but… he’s working on it. And if part of his relationship with Blaine is that no one truly knows there is a relationship to begin with, then that is something he is not working on. Currently.
It’s on the list, though.
First, however, he has to find his boyfriend, or lover, or… his Blaine, that is easier, and ask about what he’s heard from Wyatt, because honestly? Only the Warblers get that brand of crazy things happening to them.
He finds Blaine close to the senior commons, helping someone find their way around. Sebastian thinks it’s cute that Blaine ignores how absurd that is, because as it is, they are in February, and any valuable Freshman gets their way around the second week of October.
“Anderson” he says, effectively scaring off the poor student and making him scatter. Blaine throws him a stern look Sebastian is not buying for a second, and lets the tall boy get close to him.
“Any reason you’re tormenting a freshman again?”
“Not particularly, but it’s always fun” Sebastian says, smiling big at him. Even bigger when Blaine rolls his eyes playfully at that “. Besides, I wanted to talk to you”
“Sure” Blaine nods “. About?”
“About a rumor Wyatt just told me after practice. B… a spy?” He asks, watching as Blaine blinks in recognition and lets out a small snort that shouldn’t be as cute as it ultimately is.
“Oh, yeah” he nods, “. From McKinley”
“Should I know where that is, or…?”
“It’s in Lima” Blaine clarifies “. A public high school-”
“Ew”
“Shut up. As I was saying, it’s a public school in Lima. We were supposed to compete against them at Sectionals, but there was a mess up with the paperwork”
“Too bad. Are they good?”
“They have Rachel Berry, and she’s pretty good” Blaine admits, hiking up his satchel. Sebastian has a fleeting thought of holding it for him, but. He stops himself. If barely “. I’ve seen some videos, her voice is amazing. They are our rivals at Regionals, however, so…”
“They send a spy” Sebastian completes for him “. Fun. I assume Wes and David took care of it. How did he blend in, anyway?”
“He didn’t. He stopped me in the stairway and asked me for directions. I clocked him immediately, but thought…”
“To intimidate him” Sebastian completes for him, once more. It gains him a smirk this time “. I heard Katy Perry was a big success. Sorry I missed it”
“You had an important meeting for lacrosse, it’s more than fine. And I needed to focus on the task at hand, anyway”
“Oh, am I too distracting for you?” Sebastian asks, stepping closer to him. He can see people looking at them as they pass by but, for once, he doesn’t care. He’s been Blaine’s secret boyfriend for months, and he can show some possessiveness in public every once in a while.
Blaine blushes faintly at that, pushing at his chest to get him to take a step back “. You know you are” he replies, eyes going to his lips first, and then his eyes “. So. Yes. You would’ve been too distracting”
“I’m saving that up for later” Sebastian replies, not even trying to hide his smile “. So, what happened then? Did Wes talk to him?”
“Yeah. Wes, David, and I asked him for a coffee in the senior commons. Talked to him a bit. His name is Kurt Hummel” Blaine informs him, leaning against the wall a bit “. A year above us, I think, and already a fan”
“Flattery will get him nowhere”
“It got you somewhere, didn’t it?” Blaine asks him, a smirk Sebastian is sure he’s learnt from him decorating his face.
“And I am the only one supposed to get there, so”
“Shut up, it’s not like that” the shorter boy laughs “. He just… I don’t know. It seemed like he needed the talk. He was so impressed by us, by the way the school sees us, treats us. I think he’s having issues at his high-school”
“And you saw yourself in him” Sebastian completes, gently “. Is he gay, too?”
“Yeah” Blaine nods “. Seemed pretty shocked when we told him gay kids are treated with respect at Dalton. I don’t know how bad the bullying is at McKinley, but…”
“Yeah, gay kid and Ohio is not a good combo.” Sebastian nods, hating the way Blaine’s smile disappears." You gonna do something?”
“I gave him my number” Blaine admits “. Just in case he needs my help, or if he wants to talk”
“Right”
“Is that okay with you?” Blaine asks, a bit unsure. Sebastian can only frown at that, slightly, and stop himself from resting his hands on Blaine’s waist.
“Of course it is” he says. Blaine visibly deflates in relief at that “. Hey” Sebastian murmurs, getting closer once more “. Killer, I get it. You see yourself in him and want to help him. It’s sweet”
“Thanks” Blaine smiles, this time going to fix Sebastian’s lapel. Neither mentions that there was no need for fixing it “. So… was the spy the only reason you wanted to talk with me?”
“Is that a crime?” Sebastian asks.
“Well, no” Blaine replies, tilting his head “. It’s just… you would’ve known faster if you were a Warbler”
“Oh my God, not this again”
“I am just saying-“
“Blaine-“ Sebastian tries, but, before he can argue Blaine’s repetitive insistence that he joins the Warblers, Nick barges in, grabbing Blaine’s arm and dragging him away “. Duval, I was talking to him!” He yells after them. Blaine looks back at Sebastian in apology, but Nick throws a middle finger at him.
“Hog him later, we have Warbler business right now!”
When Blaine smirks and mouths to him too bad, Sebastian can only throw a middle finger at him.
*
Truth to be told, Sebastian forgets about the spy at Dalton by the time Blain is finally free from his clubs - after all, they have a very small window of time between the end of them, and dinner time. And Blaine is way more interesting than any spy from a public high-school Dalton could have. He’s vaguely aware of Blaine texting him, mostly because his boyfriend tells him about it, and on how he hopes he can help Kurt with the bullying issue.
He doesn’t tell him things for a few days or so, though he looks a bit more worried about him, and when he starts to look less so, Sebastian has sort of forgotten about Kurt Hummel. It’s easy to do so when he’s so busy with school, and the lacrosse team, and his internal debate on whether to join the warblers, and finding time to spend with Blaine.
That’s why he’s a bit taken back when he runs into someone on his way to the dining hall. He’s running a bit late and is in a hurry to meet Blaine, and all of a sudden, there is someone in the middle of his way, looking as lost as Sebastian has seen anyone at Dalton look. Freshmen included.
The guy he runs into frowns at him and doesnt apologise, looking him up and down and deepening his frown once Sebastian has stopped himself from stumbling. He’s new, that much Sebastian can tell immediately. Not only because he looks like he doesn’t belong there, but because he’s very much not a freshman, and Sebastian has a pretty clear knowledge of everyone who attends Dalton in their year, or older.
“If you look where you’re going, maybe you won’t run into people, you know” he says once it’s clear the guy is not apologizing for the collision.
“Excuse me” the guy says. He doesn’t have an authoritative voice so, if anything, Sebastian is amused.
“You quite literally bumped into me. Almost made me fall. And not even a sorry?”
“Are these your halls, by chance?” The guy asks “. I was just trying to find my way around, you could be nicer”
“Right” Sebastian snorts “. I’ll write that down”
He’s about to step away, already thinking of telling Blaine about this, when the guy yells after him.
“Wait!” He repeats, looking very much like he doesn’t want to keep talking to him “. I was wondering if you knew where the Warblers are”
“The Warblers” Sebastian repeats, dumbly.
“Yes. Big group on Campus, kinda leads this place?”
“I am aware of them, newbie. Why do you want to know where they are?”
“I’m searching for one of them” the guy explains “. Blaine. Blaine Anderson. Do you know him?”
At that, Sebastian arches an eyebrow, deep down starting to suspect who this new kid might be. Yay him.
“I happen to know him” he eventually says, nodding “. Why do you wanna find him?”
“I…” the kid stutters, and Sebastian almost feels sorry for him. Almost being the keyword here, because if this kid is Kurt Hummel? He’s seen enough messages from him to know that, at the very least, his admiration for Blaine might be luring him too close to a crush, if it hasn’t happened yet. And that’s very much not happening on Sebastian’s watch “. I thought he could help me out. We’re friends, he encouraged me to start here at Dalton”
He very much hadn’t, and Sebastian knows. He’d made an off-handed comment, sure, okay, but he knows that’s it. But, hey. He can be nice. He can be understanding, even. First days are always nerve-racking, and he’s not a monster. Even if he’s not going to make things easier for Kurt Hummel.
“I presume you’re Kurt Hummel, then” he says. He stops himself from rolling his eyes at the very last second, because the way Kurt’s eyes light up only tells him the crush on Blaine is already big. Yay him “. Blaine mentioned you were a wannabe spy a week ago or so”
“Couple weeks, but yeah” Kurt nods “. Could you maybe find him? This place is big, bigger than I initially thought it’d be, and he could help me find my way around”
Sebastian is five seconds away from telling him that, no, he’s not gonna do that, he’s not playing messenger for anybody, and he’s not sacrificing time with Blaine so Kurt can have a personal guide. Before he can do so, however, he sees Kurt’s eyes grow wider, looking behind Sebastian, and he knows what’s coming next.
“There you are!” He hears “. I’ve been looking for you forever”
There is half of a second where Sebastian feels a bit sorry for Kurt Hummel, and the way he believes Blaine’s words are directed to him, but it happens quickly, and he instead enjoys, freely, how victorious he feels once Blaine puts a gentle hand on his upper arm, twisting him so they can lock eyes.
“Sorry” Sebastian apologises, unable to stop a smile “. Got distracted momentarily”
“Distracted” Blaine repeats, frowning. At Kurt’s clearing of his throat, his head turns fast, and he smiles, genuine in the way he always is “. Kurt! Oh wow, you’re here!”
“I told you I started today”
“Yes, yes” Blaine nods “. It slipped my mind, sorry. Lots of things going on at the moment. Are you settling in okay?”
“Yeah, it’s… a lot, but it’s good” Kurt replies, eyes not moving from the hand Blaine is still resting on Sebastian’s arm. They even follow the shorter boy’s movement as he walks it down Sebastian’s arm and links it with his. The taller boy of the three can barely stop himself from puffing his chest “. Actually, I was wondering if I could talk to you. It’s urgent”
“Are you okay?” Blaine immediately asks, frowning. And because he can see Blaine selflessly trying to help Kurt, Sebastian has to intervene.
“Hummel was just telling me Dalton is a bit too big, so he’s feeling a bit lost”
“Ah” Blaine nods “. I get it, it’s happened to the best of us. Dalton can be very big and intimidating during the first few weeks, but I promise you learn your way around quick”
“That’s the hope” Kurt says, laughing nervously after his words “. So… can you help me? Maybe we can take a little tour”
“A tour” Blaine parrots back, forcing a smile at Kurt’s enthusiastic nod “. I don’t know…”
“I also wanted to ask you about the Warblers” Kurt asks. "I know the auditions are today, I thought no one better than Blaine Anderson to give me advice on this”
“Right” Blaine smiles “. Well, I am very flattered, Kurt. But I think you can ask Wes, or David. You met them, remember? They’re on the council, I’m sure they know way more than I do”
“Oh” Kurt frowns “. But, I thought…”
“Any other time I’d love to help” Blaine continues, slowly starting to walk away “. But right now I have something very important to do, and I kinda need Sebastian’s help. You’ve met him already, no?”
“Just now, but-“
“Great! Now you know more people. Wes was leaving the library and heading towards the dining hall” Blaine says, starting to drag Sebastian away faster “. Tell him I sent you, okay?”
“Yes, but-“
“I’ll see you later!” Blaine exclaims, already far enough, Sebastian is very sure Kurt cannot see him smile in victory, preening almost. He lets himself be dragged away, not thinking about how a good portion of the student body is so used of seeing Blaine drag him around that they barely glance at them.
Blaine takes him to an empty classroom and closes the door behind them, and Sebastian welcomes his kiss, bringing him closer to his body and immediately forgetting about any new transfers. He lets Blaine explore his mouth, does the same with his, and only breaks away when his lungs are screaming at him.
“This was the very important thing to do?” He asks. Blaine shrugs, not looking a tiny bit ashamed of his actions, and goes to play with the taller boy’s lapel.
“You were looking good, and I wanted to be alone with you. I’ve barely seen you today”
Sebastian smirks at Blaine’s answer, bringing him even closer to his body and lacing his hands over Blaine’s low waist, thumbs digging into the swell of his ass. He’s tempted to bring him closer, try to become one with him, because being alone with Blaine is the one thing in the world that brings him peace. But they are on a time limit now, and he knows, and he wants some answers.
“So, Hummel ended up transfering” he eventually says. He can tell Blaine is a bit surprised by his question, doe-eyes blinking in surprise at it, but he nods, hands going from his lapel to rest on his biceps.
“Yeah. He told me this morning, I think he wanted his transfer to be a surprise. To be honest, I only replied once, it’s been a crazy day with the upcoming Warbler auditions”
“Auditions Hummel wants to try”
“That’s what he said. And I told you we might need him, so”
“Yeah, yeah, the new members thing. How many did you need again?”
“At least two, but I know Wes is open to four. So… Kurt will most likely make it. Not only because we need voices, but also, I think Wes can tell he needs a group of people to support him”
“Right” Sebastian nods. He can see Blaine is projecting right now, and he won’t call him out on it. It’s not necessary “. So, if this Hummel kid makes it in… that sort of means you’d be spending time together, right?”
“That’s usually how it goes when two people are in the same club, yeah” Blaine replies, not even trying to hide his amusement at Sebastian’s question “. I imagine I’d spend with him the same time I spend with my fellow Warblers”
“So, a lot” Sebastian completes for him. Blaine snorts, then shrugs, and then puts his arms around Sebastian’s neck, in the same way he’s done it since he discovered it fries Sebastian’s brain for a solid five-to-fifteen seconds.
“I don’t know, I guess so” he says “. It looks like he’s in need of a mentor, too, and I like the idea of being there for someone like Wes was there for me, so that might be something worth taking into account”
Sebastian hums at that, ignoring how Blaine rolls his eyes at him when he pulls him closer to his body “. He does seem clingy”
“He’s not” Blaine laughs.
“You don’t know him”
“Neither do you, babe”
“I’ve seen enough”
“Oh my God” Blaine laughs again “. Baby”
“I’m just saying”
“Huh, you’re just saying” Blaine murmurs, still laughing. He kisses Sebastian then, smile pressed against his frown “. You know, if you were a Warbler… you could be spending more time with me, too. Just saying”
“Right. You’re just saying”
“Just like you” Blaine replies, winking at him. The bell interrupts them then, telling them they have barely thirty minutes to get any lunch in them, and the shorter boy is quick to kiss Sebastian and pat his cheek, lovingly “. C’mon. I bribed Jeff into buying our food today”
Sebastian does follow him. And if he walks into the auditions with his head held high, it is not because of jealousy, thank you very much.
(Seeing Blaine try and fail to hide his smile makes it all worth it, anyway)
*
“You know, I need a mentor, too”
“Sure you do”
“I am new to the Warblers as well”
“Sure you are”
“So. You could be mine, and we can let Trent be Hummel’s. Or David, perhaps. He’s been so jealous of Wes ever since he got to be yours”
“Then maybe he can be yours”
“Don’t be ridiculous here, Killer”
Blaine snorts at that, finally turning around from where he’s sitting on his desk, this time for real, doing some Warbler stuff. Sebastian guesses he should ask what exactly is - he is a member now, after all. Sitting up on Blaine’s bed, and praying Jeff doesn't come in, he watches as Blaine goes to sit next to him.
“Babe, we talked about this. I understand what Kurt is going through. And I want to help him, because I truly get how hard it can be. Now I can hopefully help him and, yeah, maybe helping him comes by being his mentor. We’ll see. And you” he adds, grabbing Sebastian’s hand “ have been at Dalton for almost as long as I have, and you know the Warblers. Let’s be realistic here, it would look a bit ridiculous to give you a mentor”
“You might have a point” Sebastian reluctantly admits “. It’s just…”
“It’s just?” Blaine asks, frowning a bit. Sebastian sighs and muffles a groan, briefly thinking that this is exactly why he hasn’t bothered with relationships before. Then again - Blaine is worth it. He knows he is.
“It’s just that I can see Kurt will like to spend more time with you. He will like it way too much” he finally says, to Blaine’s confusion “. He clearly has a crush on you, Killer”
“He does not”
“Baby” Sebastian snorts “. He does. Anyone could see it”
“I don’t see it” Blaine insists “. And even if he did, who cares?”
“I mean, I do”
“Why? Sebastian, you are my boyfriend, not him. Even if you were right, and I am not saying you are, I am not single, and I am not interested in him”
“Kurt doesn’t know that. Either thing”
“Bas, that’s your decision” Blaine exclaims, almost too loud “. You were the one who said to keep our relationship private, that we were the only ones who needed to know”
“Because it’s true. I don’t see what the big deal is of telling everyone that we are together. We are, we know. That’s what is important to us, and we agree, and we know, and we want to be together. It is our thing. I don’t see why we should make of this a public matter”
Blaine hums at his words, turning his hand upside down and starting to play with his fingers. It is a bit unsettling “. We are together” he eventually says “. But… people don’t know. No one does, really. Which means that people will flirt with us. They will have crushes on us, maybe”
“They shouldn’t, though”
“They think we’re single”
“They know we’re close though” Sebastian argues, even when he, deep down, knows it is a losing battle “. Even if we’re not publicly together, people still know how close we are. They know not to come between us”
Blaine snorts at that, not ungently, and lets Sebastian’s hand go, to then rest his on the taller’s thigh “. Not everyone” he says, getting an immediate frown from Sebastian. He moves then, sitting on his lap and resting his hands on either side of his face “. I only want you, Sebastian. Only you. So even if Kurt likes me, even if anyone likes me, I am not interested. But that doesn't mean I am never approached, or asked… c’mon, you know this. You’ve heard this before”
“I… didn’t think that happened in front of you” Sebastian admits, feeling himself blush “. I figured it would always be people asking your friends, not you directly. I’ve never actually seen it”
“That’s because they always do it when they know you aren’t around” Blaine reveals “. And I never told you because I didn’t think that was worth mentioning. Besides, I know plenty of people want you. I know plenty of people have asked. And sure, you always ignore them, but I’ve still seen it”
“And that doesn't bother you?” Sebastian asks, softly. He almost doesn’t want to hear the answer, but he also can’t bring himself not to ask “.
“It does sometimes,” Blaine admits, and then adds “. Well, a lot of times. I’m guessing that it annoys me the same way it annoys you. But, again… this is what you wanted. This is what you asked for when we started dating. And I could see you needed this, so I was completely okay with it. I just want you to be happy”
“Is that what you want?” Sebastian asks then, voice small in a way he almost doesn’t recognise. He’s scared to ask, scared to know, but… he has to ask. And he has to know “. Are you happy?”
Blaine is looking at him now. There is a bit of surprise in his hazel eyes, and a bit of fear, and Sebastian, suddenly, asks himself just for how long Blaine has been asking himself if this was worth it. If he could do it. If he was happy. If Sebastian could see all of that, maybe. God, has he been an idiot all this time?
Before he can find out, before he can know, the sound of the door starting to open startles them both and makes Blaine move fast, going back to his chair and, miraculously, not falling on his face. Sebastian doesn’t think he’s hated to see Jeff coming in more than at that moment.
*
He tries to talk with Blaine after, but it is nearly impossible. With him coming into the Warblers, there is barely a second he can be alone, or just with Blaine. He cannot fully hate it, not when it means he’s being embraced this warmly, not when it would mean foregoing some bonding with his (now) fellow Warblers. He likes them, has always done it, really, and he doesn’t want to make them think he doesn’t because, honestly, he knows he has a hard time making people realise he actually likes spending time with them.
Fortunately, it is not like Blaine is avoiding him, and it is not like this is the first time they struggle to find time for themselves in the chaotic and busy life of two top-of-the-class Dalton students. But this time feels worse, seems worse, because they were left in the middle of something, and because the question they left their conversation in is one that is eating at Sebastian, wondering if, maybe, his relationship is doomed.
He doesn’t think so. He’s pretty sure Blaine really likes him, and he’s pretty sure he loves Blaine, but also… he’d believed Blaine to be better with their arrangement. So. If he was blind about that, what tells him he wasn’t blind about everything else, too?
It doesn’t help that, now that he’s aware of it, he can fully see how interested people are in Blaine. How they constantly follow him with their eyes, how they try to start conversations with him as often as possible, how they fold under his gaze. And, hey, Sebastian can understand, but it doesn’t mean he has to like it. And he very much doesn’t.
Almost all of them do it whenever they think he’s not around, or looking, which makes him feel a bit of an idiot for not having realised a bit sooner, but then he tells himself that people were indeed going behind his back. All except Kurt Hummel, apparently, because that guy has no chill whatsoever, and seems to believe he can, somehow, win Blaine over. Not a chance. Not if Sebastian can help it.
And yes. Okay. Maybe he’s jealous. Terribly so, even. Maybe. But, as soon as he accepts that, he realises he cannot base any decision on jealousy, or on something that will make him feel better. After all, Blaine has been looking out for him for months… It’s time he looks out for Blaine. He deserves so. He deserves the world.
Once that clicks in his head, it’s almost like everything else does, too. He starts to see why Blaine wanted a more public relationship, and for people to know and, even more than that, he starts to want that, too. He wants all the parts of a relationship with Blaine… to grab his hand whenever, to sneak kisses and ignore the complaints about that, to show everyone in the world that he managed to get pure sunshine to fall in love with all the dark parts in him.
Sebastian still values their privacy, and he firmly thinks he will still value and adore their alone time, and their little world, more than anything in this world. For the first time, he sees that being public doesn’t mean the things he value will disappear. If anything, keeping some part of them private will feel even more sacred. What matters to him, though, what truly matters, is that he’s extremely proud of being Blaine’s boyfriend, and he wants everyone to see it.
Talking to Blaine about it comes to his mind fast, and leaves just like it, too. He could, and he will in some way, but he also knows that a private conversation won’t do. He has to do something to actually mark the next step of their relationship. Besides, he is aware of how in love Blaine is with big, romantic gestures, and so. He will do it. For his boyfriend, he will. Maybe not something huge, because he’s also aware that Blaine wants to find it genuine still, but… something significant.
It also helps that Valentine’s Day is getting dangerously close, and so… the idea comes to him fast. It only requires a trip to a nearby mall, and remembering Blaine’s two-hour TED Talk on the significance of flowers. He skips the period before break the day before Valentine’s Day, if anything because he doesn’t want to share a big day with anything and, also, he sorta wants to celebrate the day as public boyfriends already.
He makes a bouquet of Blaine’s favorite flowers, because he does listen and he does remember every little thing Blaine has shared about himself with him, and on his way back to his car, he stops to buy some chocolates, ignoring the butterflies in his chest as he does so.
For when he manages to get back to Dalton (he’s driven slower than all in his three-months with a license), he texts Blaine to meet them at their spot, and leaves his car. He can feel all the eyes that are immediately on him, but, for once, he doesn’t care. He goes to the part of the gardens that he’s come to appreciate so much. A garden of poppies (now slowly starting to grow, but usually vibrant during the Summer) with benches every few feet. Sebastian has lost count of all the times he’s sat with Blaine there, talking about anything, and everything.
By the time he’s gotten there, he can feel what seems like half of Dalton’s student body looking at him, and he can definitely feel the shit-eating grin of the Warblers, but he forces to not look. Instead, he looks around for Blaine and, when he spots him, he doesnt even pretend his breath is not caught in his throat.
Blaine seems truly taken back by him being there with a bouquet bigger than his head and a box of chocolates in his free hand. Not even acknowledging the people looking at him, the shorter boy gets closer to him in a few quick steps, eyeing the flowers with a glint in his eyes.
“Sebastian” he greets him “. What’s all this?”
“Happy Valentine’s Day, Killer”
“It is tomorrow” Blaine points out, still smiling.
“Well, and tomorrow I’ll give you something else” Sebastian shrugs, watching as Blaine finally comes to stand in front of him “. I’ll give you everything you want, Blaine. If you ask for it, I will give you the world”
“Sebastian…” Blaine breathes out.
“I wanted to apologise. I wasn’t aware that us being so private could affect you so much. I thought just having each other was enough”
“It is enough, Bas”
“Maybe, in a way” Sebastian concedes, tilting his head “. In the most basic, sacred version of it, it is. But I also think the effort to keep it private hurts you in a way I hadn’t realised. Not being free to be ourselves… I thought it would feel liberating, or that we’d be defying society, or… it was dumb. I thought I had to take control of it all, but I should’ve done it with you. Should have seen what that looked like for us”
“Sebastian, I just need to be with you” Blaine whispers to him, looking up at him.
“And I just need to be with you” Sebastian whispers back “. And we will still have what we’ve had up until now. Our privacy, our world… I still want that. But I also want to grab your hand when we’re walking down the halls. I want to kiss you whenever and wherever I am, and I want to brag about my boyfriend to whoever will hear. I love you, Blaine. And I want to do it loudly. I think I deep down always wanted it, I just… didn’t know how to see it”
Blaine is close to tears by now, breath coming in quick and leaving him in small puffs “. I love you too, Sebastian” he says, in the greatest sound he’s ever heard.
“So is that a yes?”
“It will always be a yes, Love” Blaine replies, smiling so big it looks like it might hurt his face. Sebastian doesn’t even have time to reply to that, because he has Blaine’s lips on him before he can react. He can feel Blaine’s hand going to his nape to bring him closer to his body, and his smile against his lips, and he can only kiss back, try not to crush the flowers, and ignore everyone cat-calling them in the background. Including Jeff’s very loud ‘I knew it! I totally knew it!’.
When they break their kiss, Sebastian can see Blaine’s blush on his cheeks, and the way his eyes are so bright, and how big his smile is. Truth to be told, this is the happiest he’s seen his boyfriend. That alone makes everything worth it.
“These are for you” he says then, finally giving him the flowers and ignoring the whistles all around them once more.
“My favourite,” Blaine says, smiling even bigger “. All of my favorites”
“And your favourite chocolates, too”
“Oh my, Smythe. Pulling all the stops the day before Valentine’s?” Blaine asks, smiling playfully at him “. What will you even do tomorrow?”
Sebastian throws his head back at that and laughs, moving so he can put one arm around Blaine’s waist and pull his body as close to him as possible. It is so refreshing how he can do that now. Maybe Blaine was onto something the entire time.
“Don’t underestimate me, baby. I will keep surprising you”
“Oh yeah?”
“Oh, yeah. And, if you let me… I’ll keep doing it. For as long as you let me”
“Then that will be an awfully long time”
Kissing Blaine again after that only reassures Sebastian that this is the best decision he’s ever made. And that he’s nailed their first Valentine’s together…
…he’s pretty sure he’ll nail all that come after, too.
