“The world is changed.
(Han matho ne nen.)
I feel it in the water.
(Han mathon ned cae.)
I feel it in the earth.
(A han noston ned gwilith.)
I smell it in the air.”
Lady Galadriel’s monologue that opened “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” had always been one of Hermione Granger’s favorites, but after what had happened - and what had almost happened - at the Ministry just before the start of the summer holidays, the words seemed to ring more than ever before. The problem was, she wasn’t sure why. For some reason, the words now seemed to make her skin almost vibrate with…anticipation, more so than they had ever done before. She also discovered that the closer she got to her birthday, the more that weird stuff began to happen.
In one instance, just the previous day actually, she had been talking with her mother about the holiday they were about to go on when she started feeling almost giddy…far more than what she was feeling already. When she spoke with her father later on that evening, she felt a wave of sadness overcome her, so much so that she asked her father if something was wrong. He dismissed her question with a small wave, though she felt a brief spike of pride go through her, almost as if it was her that was proud over something.
Hermione sat up in confusion and curiosity and frowned. Come to think of it, she had been able to feel emotions from others for a while. This ability had been the reason why even though the Headmaster had told her that she was prohibited from contacting Harry Potter over the summer, she had turned to muggle means in defiance of his…suggestion. Before going home for the summer, she asked her parents to briefly stop in Diagon Alley so that she could buy something to stay in contact with Harry and when she explained why, they were more than happy to do a small detour.
She found a pair of journals that were magically connected and almost whooped in joy. The next morning, she popped one of the journals in the mail with a slight compulsion charm on it so that if Harry wasn’t the one to pick it up, whoever did would give it to him. She had already written a message in the journal explaining what they were and when Harry replied a few days later, she was ecstatic. Thanks to the journals, she didn’t have to worry about him as much as she would have if she had listened to the headmaster.
The summer continued somewhat smoothly. She spent time with her parents, read her books, did her homework, and wrote to Harry in the journal several times a time. She was looking forward to the trip to pick up her school supplies in Diagon Alley later that week, as she would be seeing Harry for the first time since the…almost incident. Just as she was about to pick up her purse, the journal glowed in response to having an unread message.
Hermione!
I just couldn’t wait to tell someone the AWESOME news I just got! Ready? Okay! The ICW cleared Sirius of any wrong doing after questioning him under veritaserum! And since he was cleared through the ICW, he’s free everywhere! When Fudge threatened to uphold the Kiss-On-Site order despite their verdict, the new Supreme Mugwump tore him apart! It was awesome! By the time the Supreme Mugwump was done, Fudge looked as if he was ready to spit screws! Yes, I know the saying is ‘ready to spit nails,’ but I think screws would be more painful.
So not only is Sirius free, but I’m also now living with him. When Master Ito questioned Dumberbore, I mean Dumbledore, as to why I hadn’t been raised by Sirius in the first place, since that’s what my parents stated in their wills, he started spouted his ‘greater good’ nonsense and that I was ‘only safe while under the same roof as a blood relative of my mum.’ But get this…my mum was adopted by the Evans’! Petunia wasn’t even my actual blood relative, so whatever ‘protection’ I was supposedly under wasn’t working anyway!
So now I’m living with Sirius!
On another note, he wants to go to Diagon Alley this afternoon to pick up my school supplies, so I was wondering if you would meet us there. Sirius said to tempt you with your favorite ice cream in order to get you to come with us, but I told him that tempting you with a new book would be better. So how about it? A new book on me if you can join us! And even if you can’t, you know I’ll buy you a new book anyway…so win-win?
Hope to see you there!
Heir Harry Potter-Black
Oh! Forgot to mention…Sirius also blood adopted me, so now I’m his son in addition to being my parent’s son. Just to warn you, I do look a little different, but I’m going to ask that you please don’t stare ;) Just joking, Hermione…you can stare all you want ;)
Hermione’s chuckles turned into loud laughter and only a wave of concern from her parents sobered her enough to be able to finish gathering her things.
