After Strix

Summary:

The tensions between Westalis and Ostania had finally eased, and with peace came the quiet dismissal of Operation Strix.

Anya had expected the Forger family to disappear along with it. Instead, Loid Forger, or rather Twilight, remained in place ‘just in case.’ Anya was still expected to achieve eight Stella Stars; she did.

But that was years ago.

Now grown, Anya wants nothing more than to build a life that has nothing to do with anyone’s mission. After escaping a miserable job, she impulsively accepts a position at Berlint Life Sciences, hoping for a quiet office job and a fresh start.

She does not expect the CEO to be Damian Desmond.

As old classmates reunite in the workplace and secrets begin surfacing, Anya discovers her new job is tied to something far more dangerous than corporate politics.

Notes:

Chapter 1: Opening Move

Chapter Text

Anya slid the letter opener across the seal in a quick motion, anxiety bubbling in her throat. She knew it was better not to get her hopes up, she was probably under qualified for the position. Yet she would go out on a limb to get out of her current job.

She hated it. She hated the way her manager spoke to her, hated the way the files were organized, hated the way her elder coworkers thought they could speak and sneer at her any which way.

She had put in an application when she saw the ad in the paper.

Berlint Life Sciences, offering entry level positions.

She hadn’t read past that. She sent out her resume without thinking twice. But, with the letter now in her hands, she just felt as if she were another grain of sand in the desert.

How was she expected to stand out against any other bland person out there? Anyone could file a paper.

Maybe if she put her ability to read minds on display it would aid in her job search?

Yeah right, she thought as she huffed to herself.

It took everything in her to get her closest friend to believe it wasn’t some elaborate fantasy she claimed to truly be her childhood. She’d end up locked in a padded room before anyone thought to believe her.

Or back in that cold lab.

Becky stared at her from the other side of the table, her chin rested lazily on her palm. Her friend had been here for her every step of the way. She’d even attempted to get her own father to offer her Anya a position, yet it was all for nothing. There was no job that he had to give.

C’mon Anya, I know you’ve got this one in the bag. It’s an entry position for crying out loud

Becky’s thought rang loudly in Anya’s consciousness. She scoffed at her friend’s sarcasm.

“You’re not subtle, y’know.” She muttered, tearing the note from inside the envelope and beginning to read its contents aloud.

“ ‘Dear Miss Forger, we are pleased to inform you that after careful review of your resume and experience…’” she skimmed through the long paragraphs as Becky leaned forward, the letter beginning to pique even her interest.

She paused for a moment before picking back up. “ umm, let me see… oh, ‘This role reports directly to the upper management of our esteemed company. This position is expected to be in direct oversight of regulatory documentation-‘“

“Get to the good part,” Becky interrupted, sitting up fully now, glancing expectantly at her friend. Anya rolled her eyes, glancing back at the paper before continuing.

“Competitive Salary, professional growth opportunities-“

“Skip that too.” Becky piped in.

“Becky please,” Anya retorted, before glancing back down at the letter.

“‘We look forward to welcoming you to the Berlint Life Sciences team and are confident your skills will be a valuable asset to our organization.’” She finished the letter, staring at it for a silent moment.

“… they accepted me.” She said, not even getting a second to breathe before Becky had her arms around her neck, wrapping Anya in a tight embrace.

She smiled, truly smiled, for the first time in weeks. Her time being chastised like a child was over.

“This calls for a celebration!” Becky announced after turning away from Anya, rummaging through the cupboards for shot glasses and what was probably an expensive liquor.

“Becks.” Anya said, despite the prior excitement suddenly quiet and tender again.

“Thank you. You’re the bestest friend I could ask for. If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have the opportunity to be living in this nice flat. I wouldn’t have had the courage to try for this either.”

Becky’s expression softened. “Anya, I know you would do the same for me,” she said, reaching out to embrace her friend tenderly yet again.

She placed a quick kiss on Anya’s cheek before pulling away.

“No more of that sappy stuff, time for drinks!”

Anya smiled sweetly at her friend, before reaching out and taking her glass, clinking it with Becky’s.

She threw back the shot, the spicy liquid tearing down her throat and bringing her a pleasant buzz, and before she knew it, another, and another.

As she and Becky spoke, the room began to tilt, and the last thing she recalled was Becky’s insistence they go shopping for her a new outfit.
