Chapter Text
The monitor did not panic. It beeped. Steady. Measured. Unforgiving.
Arky Arceta had heard that sound thousands of times in her career — in operating rooms, in trauma bays, in rooms where families whispered prayers like bargains. But tonight, the sound felt personal.
McKenzie Lim lay motionless beneath hospital lights, her skin pale against sterile white sheets. Electrodes mapped her chest. An IV line threaded into her vein. Oxygen hissed softly. Her heart was beating. But not the way it should.
Broken heart syndrome. Arky had studied it in journals. Had lectured on it. Had treated it before. She had never watched it threaten the woman she loved. Her fingers hovered above McKenzie’s wrist. She was afraid to touch her. Because she knew what she would see. She had known for months. The numbers had counted down relentlessly.
Five days.
Four.
Three.
Now—
1 DAY.
Cause of Death: Stress-Induced Cardiomyopathy.
Arky’s throat tightened. The prophecy had clarified. Not poetic anymore. Not a metaphor. Medical. Imminent.
“You’re still here,” McKenzie whispered weakly, eyes fluttering open. Arky stepped forward immediately, taking her hand. Skin to skin. The number did not change.
1 DAY.
“I’m not leaving,” Arky said. It sounded like a promise. It sounded like a plea. She had spent months loving this woman like she was already gone. Preparing for grief before it arrived. Trying to distance herself from the impact. And yet here she was—
Unable to step back.
The clock on the ICU wall read 11:42 PM. Eighteen minutes until midnight. Eighteen minutes until the end of the countdown. Arky pressed her forehead gently against McKenzie’s hand.
“You are not dying tonight,” she whispered.
But fate did not negotiate. It never had.
