Work Text:
It was a decently normal day for will, well, as normal as possible for a teen who was currently trying to save their small home town from interdimentional beings. It was just about noon, and Mike and his mom were out at the store getting groceries. It had only been about a month or so since the Byers had moved in with the Wheelers and since the whole there-are-literal-cracks-in-the-ground-leading-to-the-upside-down shenanigan.
Mrs. Wheeler had been griping to Mike about getting some of his crap out of his room so that Will could comfortably get accustomed to sharing a room with Mike. As for the whole roommate situation, originally Will expected to just be sleeping in the basement with Jonathan, but for some reason Mrs. Wheeler insisted that Will could stay in Mike’s room, and to Will’s even greater surprise Mike agreed without objection.
So, here Will was, in Mike’s, now his as well, room, about to take the boxes that Mike had begrudgingly stuffed full old clothes and random items that had been buried around his messy room to make space for a new occupant, downstairs to put in storage (which would likely be forgotten by the time the Byers moved out but alas). Will kneeled down to pry a box from under the bed (Mike had kicked it under the bed because he had tripped over it that morning and stubbed his toe). When he scooted the box out from under the bed he saw another, small, cardboard box in the back corner of the wall. Thinking that it was another poor box that Mike had taken his anger out on, Will halfway crawled, halfway reached, under the bed to grab it. When he pulled it into the light he saw that it looked to he an older, more worn, cardboard box than the others. It had a couple stains from where a substance, presumably water, had been spilt on it, and the corners of the box had become slightly fuzzy from worn out cardboard. Will noticed that this box wasn’t taped closes like the others were and that it was much lighter.
Will forced himself not to be nosy and simply stacked the small box on top of the original one he dragged out from under the bed. He pried his fingers underneath the bigger box and lifted,
‘Damn’ he thought. The box was heavier than he expected. Once he pulled the box all the way up, he stumbled slightly, not dropping the box, but letting the small one slide off. ‘Damn’ he repeated. He sat the big box down on Mike’s bed and turned to pick the small box back up. He paused when he noticed that its contents had spilled out. They looked to be letters. None of them had an address, but they all carried the same name. Will faltered.
Will. They all just said Will. He knew he shouldn’t pry, he knew that if Mike wanted him to read them then he would have sent them. But that just made Will want to read them more. What could he possibly have to say that would take so many letters, much less, what could he want to say so badly that he would write it, but not say it? Without truly meaning to, Will reached out and gently lifted a letter. He lifted it so gently it was as if he thought it might be made of sand. Will carefully lifted the flap of the envelope and pried the letter out. He took a deep breath, unsure as to why he was so nervous, and unfolded the paper.
To My Dearest, Will
I cannot begin to express to you the words in which my heart so desperately wishes to utter. In recent days my dreams seem to fill only of you. My heart and mind seem only to agree on this one thing, you. Both are consumed night and day by your smile. Both cannot go a day without urging me to express what they both so desperately want. My Will, my Heart, my Mind, my very Soul. You consume me, utterly. And yet you do not even know, you have not a clue of your cruel tyranny in my life. You lounge on the throne of my life, because you are oblivious. I curse cupid because this only makes me—
I hope you return to me soon, Will. The only sorcerer that knows what spells to cast to warm my poor, cold heart. Come back to me, Will.
Love,
Mike.
“Will?”
