Work Text:
Jackson knew his parents didn't know and if they did, he doesn't think they would care. He had played hockey his whole life, it was his life. He had been on his school's hockey team all four years of his high school career. In junior year he was assistant captain and in his senior year he was made captain after their last captain graduated. During one of his last games as captain he found out that scouts were there and he was offered a full ride scholarship to his dream school! He did have to stay on the hockey team and keep his GPA at a 3.5 or else he would loose the scholarship, and he couldn't get written up but, it can't be that hard. He is so excited, he just has to get through the last couple days of high school.
•~• (Day 1)
It was fun to go and celebrate with the guys, he's going to miss them but they promised to stay in contact and still hang out every now and then.
Humming to himself he walked up his sidewalk and moved to unlock the front door, letting himself in.
Him 'lovely' mom greeted him yelling, "Where were you! School finished hours ago! You were suppose to clean the house before we got back, and it's still dirty!"
He sighed quietly not wanting to give his mom anything more to yell at him about and rolled his eyes, yelling back, "Hockey practice is over so me and the guys went to celebrate winning this year." Not technically a lie, but not technically true either. And anyways this is the time he would get back from hockey practice anyways because his parents don't pick him up. He has to walk, get a ride or take a public bus to get home and their house is a good mile and a half mile walk from the school and right after hockey practice who wants to walk a mile and a half?
"Don't talk to me like that young man! I am your mother, I brought you into this world, you should be grateful!"
This time he couldn't stop the loud sigh that left his mouth. "I would be if you could get off my back!" He yelled as he ran up the stairs to his room, slamming the door.
•~• (Day 2)
Jackson was grabbing a burrito out of the freezer for breakfast when his dad came into the kitchen.
His dad walked straight for the fridge and he had to close the freezer and move out of the way so his dad wouldn't run into him or the freezer.
He stood there impatient to get his breakfast so he could start the walk to school but his dad seemed to have other plans and just stood there looking stupid in his opinion trying to figure out what he wanted for breakfast.
Sighing he looked at his watch and realized that if he didn't leave now he would have to run to school or he would be late.
Looking forlorn at the fridge he sighed and turned to leave forgoing breakfast in favor of not being late. His mom gives him crap when she gets the message that he sluffed or was late to a class and he did not want to deal with that today.
Walking out the door he decided that he would just have to wait till lunch to get food, unless he was lucky and his friends had food for him.
Sometimes he hated the fact that his parents were healthy freaks. Like the only thing they allowed him to eat that was even remotely good was the burritos and school lunch. When he did eat with his parents it was usually kale and brussel sprouts or something equally gross.
•~• (Day 3)
Today was the last day before he graduated high school and could start getting ready to go to college. He couldn't wait because even though he was leaving everything he knew behind he was going to get to experience something new and exciting.
And today his luck was great! He managed to get breakfast before his dad came in for his food so he got breakfast and wasn't late for the last day of school!
Humming to himself as he ate his burrito, walking to school, he was content for the first time in a couple days.
A car horn startled him out of his self contentment and he glanced over to see one of his friends pull up next to him.
"Hey you want a ride!?" He yelled out his open window
Grinning he yelled back, "Sure, thanks!"
Jogging over to the passenger side of the car he hopped in, putting on his seat belt, noticing his friend didn't have his on he shook his head but opted not to say anything.
"Parents still making you walk?"
"Yeah, but at least I was quick enough for breakfast today." He said grinning at his friend
His friend laughed and he was hit with the reality that they would be going to college after graduation on opposite sides of the world. Well not literal opposite sides but it would feel like it, Will had been his best friend since they were in dippers, it would feel so weird to not see him every day once they moved away.
•~• (Day 4 graduation)
He was so excited to graduate it was the next big mile stone in his life that he needed to hit and it was finally here! Taking a deep breath to keep himself from wigging out he looked down the line of students, people he knew and people he didn't, finding Will he smiled. @READY?@ He asked
@YES. EXCITED. ME ADULT.@
He had to bit his cheek to keep from laughing out loud and getting them in trouble with the teacher assigned to make sure that everything went according to plan behind the scenes.
@SAME. WHISKY FINISHED?@
Will rolled his eyes a quiet laugh escaping him. Like the teacher had a sixth sense she was there in an instant whisper scolding Will for the quiet laugh. Will nodded along and made sure to look extra sorry so the teacher would leave soon. It worked some how.
@NO. MCDONALDS.@
@YES!@
He knew he was leaving and so were his friends but signing with Will like this made it easy to forget the future awaiting them all.
•~• (Day 5 first day of college)
He was hoping the group of guys he was rooming with were good guys, he doesn't know if he could face another parent situation.
Walking up to his dorm he unlocked the door with the key he was given. Taking a step into the dorm he could immediately see that the dorm was lived in. It made sense because it was explained to him that he was going to be paired up with students from upper classes to mingle with and if he had any questions, so it was less for work the school to help integrate new students.
A tall man, maybe 6'2 walked into the room and saw him, looking surprised.
"I didn't know that you were moving in today. My bad. What's your name?"
He smiled awkwardly, "Jackson."
The man stared at him, "No last name?"
He glared at nothing in particular shaking his head no, saying, "I don't care for it and you shouldn't either, it's a terrible last name for anyone to have."
The man looked intrigued but didn't push, saying, "Okay, I'm Milo Whispers."
He already liked Milo for not pushing the last name. Some people just didn't understand he wanted nothing to do with his last name.
Smiling he said, "Cool, anyone else I should know lives here?"
"We have two other roommates, Gavin King, finishing his last year here and Michael Torrais he is in his second year here."
"Cool, what year are you in?"
"I'm in my third year."
"Okay so you can answer any questions I have for you?"
"Yeah, I'm here to please." Milo said sarcastically but made no other move to show his disinterest in helping him.
He smiled, "Thanks."
"You want help moving in?"
"Oh.. um sure. I only have a couple boxes and a suitcase in my car."
Milo raised a brow saying, "You have a car?"
"Yeah I got my license a while ago but my parents.. my mom celebrated getting rid of me by getting me a car. Said it was the best thing she could have wished for."
"That's harsh."
"Meh its tough love a guess."
"Okay man what ever you say, let's go get your couple boxes and suitcase."
Smiling he nodded his head and set his backpack down by the door. He wasn't worried anymore, if Gavin and Michael were this chill he knew he was going to love college.
•~• (Day 6 realizing his crush)
He was currently trying to suffocate himself with a pillow on his bed. He knew what it felt like to have a crush but this one just snuck up on him, he didn't even realize that he was even gaining a crush in the first place!
The only thing that made the embarrassing realization that he had a crush on his roommate Milo slightly better was the fact that he already knew he was bi. So at least he didn't have to go through a sexual crisis at the same time.
He just couldn't help it. Milo had.. has been so nice to him and he had gotten to know him better and.. he's a great guy. Any girl that he gets with would be lucky. Well anyone. Milo did tell him that he was bi with a bigger attraction to girls than guys. But he did still find guys attractive which was a plus. In fact he's pretty sure Milo has had a relationship with three different guys before.
But back to the terrible part. He couldn't talk to Will about it because Will was busy with classes, trying to be a lawyer. So he had no one to talk to and it was terrible because Milo and him are close. Like they talk everyday and hangout a lot. He needs to rant! Or go for a run but that would require him stopping his attempt to suffocate his problem out of himself so that wouldn't work.
Ugh he didn't know what to do!
•~• (Day 7 Milo returns the feelings!)
When he woke up today he did not think that it would be this roller coaster of emotions.
First in hockey practice coach pulled him aside to tell him that for his second year he wanted to make him an assistant captain if he kept up the good work! Which is amazing!
He did not ask the coach about more qualified players because who was he to tell the coach how to coach his team?
After that amazing news came the not so amazing news. Apparently Will had called him and he missed it due to practice. He called Will back immediately and found out that Will's mom had died in a car crash. He then spent the next hour talking to Will and he even volunteered to fly out to be there for Will because he was his best friend and wanted to help.
After confirming the dates and booking a flight for this weekend he went up to his dorm exhausted. But this is where the news gets great again!
Milo was there talking to Kai and Sarah his best friends about his crush! And it just so happened that as Milo said the name of said crush he stepped into the room and heard his name loud and clear.
He was Milo's crush!! He wondered how long Milo had been crushing on him? Surely not as long as he has been crushing on Milo.
Talking to Milo after that second hand embarrassing situation though was not fun. He was already exhausted from school, practice and then talking to Will, he loved Will, he did but it was still tiring. So all of that on top of having to talk to Milo, that was hard.
Luckily after yelling at each other for an hour they figured out it out and it ended with Milo and him dating!
He would say best day ever if Will's mom hadn't died but since she did it was an okay day. (He did not blame Will or Will's mom for the day being an okay day, he loved them and so this would affect him too obviously).
•~• (Day 8 college graduation)
He was so excited, he was graduating college! Will got to come out to see him graduate which made the day infinitely better, he had an amazing boyfriend that also got to come out to see him graduate AND he didn't have to give a speech. He would have done horrible.
Graduation felt like high school graduation to be honest though. It had the same 'I am about to start a new chapter in my life' feeling. However it was less strict so you could talk which was nice and a little surprising to be honest.
He was not complaining though, he was totally ready to start his life outside of school. He was being drafted for the NHL and he just hoped he got a good team. If he got drafted in Milo's city he would move in with him and if he didn't then he would figure it out. There was always the chance that one of his teammates would let him room with them for a bit before he could get his own place.
He heard their cue and smiled getting ready to walk out on stage and graduate in front of his boyfriend and friends.
•~• (Day 9 first NHL win)
He was in cloud 9, it was his first NHL win with the team! They had been working hard so to start the season with a win felt rewarding.
It had been close and he had been worried the first 2 periods, they were down 3-1, then during the 3rd period they managed to tie it and went into overtime. In over time they managed to score and win it.
The guys said that they would all celebrate by going to sleep and hanging out tomorrow because they didn't have a game. Luckily. He was not excited to play back to back games but hopefully its not too hard.
To celebrate today, he planned to call his boyfriend. Sadly he did not get drafted to his city but at least they could call still.
He drove Charlie and him home and immediately got ready for bed, before he finally called Milo.
Milo answered after the 6th ring with a "I heard you won congratulations."
He smiled and said, "Yeah, I wanted call and see how you were doing?"
"I'm great, how was the first game of the season?"
"It was exciting as much as it was anxiety filled."
"Yeah, I saw you guys down by 2 in the second. At least you managed to tie in the 3rd. It was a good come back."
"Thanks, me and the guys are celebrating tomorrow for our first win of the season."
"That sounds fun. Why not tonight?"
"Well I don't know about them but I'm beat. I don't think I could really celebrate right now."
"Then you should probably sleep, I can call you tomorrow."
"Okay, I'm glad you answered, I wanted to talk to you."
"I'm glad I answered too. Now get some sleep."
"Okay."
Milo hung up and he only smiled at the phone before he passed out.
•~• (Day 10 engagement)
He was glad that he got to come and support Milo while he got promoted in his company. He knows how hard he works. Honestly though it was just luck. They had a game the day before and so they were already in town and he convinced his coach to let him stay another day, which lead to his team staying another day which was great, they got to see the city better. But really all he wanted was to see Milo.
Milo had made it to the game the night before but he had work today so he couldn't hangout with him till later.
Milo had actually said he would pick him up for the party which was sweet and totally welcome because they hadn't seen each other for a couple months. The last time they had a game here they had another game the next day so they couldn't stay.
Humming to himself he walked out of his apartment in his suit and made his way to the lobby.
Passing his team hanging out in the lounge, they waved him in. Sighing he popped his head in.
"What?" He asked
"Where are you going and in your suit too?" Logan asked
"My boyfriend got promoted and he invited me to his party. Its formal."
"OoOo the mysterious boyfriend. He lived here?" Hayden asked
"Yes and I'm going to be late, I need to go."
"Could we come and meet your boyfriend?" Adien asked
"I can ask him but I don't know."
"Great ask." Logan said
Sighing he stepped into the room and texted Milo. 'Hey, my team found out and is wondering if they could come?' He got a response immediately. 'Sure, but they have to find a ride.' Smiling he texted back, 'Great thanks they will be so excited.'
"You can come but you need a ride."
"Can't we go with you?" Logan asked
"No, I'm getting a ride with my boyfriend. I will send you the information. See you later."
Walking out of the lounge to continue to the lobby he sent the information to the team group chat.
+At the party+
"We are so glad to finally meet you. Milo talks about you all the time." Random lady 1 said
Smiling he said, "Its great to meet you. I am sure your a great person."
"He doesn't talk about us?" Random lady 2 asked
"No, he does but I can't remember names if I haven't also seen their face. Its a bad trait. I bet if you told me your name I could think of a hundred story's I have heard."
"Really? You talk about us all the time?" Random lady 2 asked
"Not on purpose but we do talk about our day."
"That's sweet, I'm Jade." Random lady 1 said
"I'm Anna." Random lady 2 said
"Oh, I know you, your the ones who accidentally glued the desk to the floor."
"He told you about that? Jade asked embarresed
"Yeah sorry was it suppose to be a secret?"
"No it's just embarrassing." Anna said flushing
"Its not too bad." He said trying to reassure them
"Love, meet my boss, Drew." Milo said walking over and giving him a kiss on the cheek
"Nice to meet you." He said reaching to give Drew a firm handshake
"You as well. I am glad that you could make it, I know Milo was worried that would won't be able to with your work schedule."
"Yes it was a worry but we got lucky and I was in town for work already."
"That is lucky. Sorry, excuse me, I need to talk to Sarah."
"Well he liked you." Milo said smiling at him
"How can you tell." He asked
"I just can."
Smiling at Milo he gave him a peck on the lips.
"Important question, would you marry me?" Milo asked pulling a ring box out of his suit pocket.
"Wait what?" He asked pulling away
"I love you, would you marry me?"
"Maybe if you get on one knee and ask." He said jokingly
Immediately Milo sank to one knee and held the box up. "Will you marry me Jackson?"
"You know I was just joking about getting on one knee right?" He asked
"You asked me to."
"Oh my.. Yes, I'll marry you." He said reaching for Milo
Smiling Milo stood and slipped the ring onto his finger. People around them clapping and cheering.
•~• (Day 11 wedding day)
Planning the wedding was a lot of work with his busy schedule but it was worth every second of it, the wedding was beautiful. And he was about to marry the man of his dreams with everyone he loves there to watch.
He was vibrating with nerves. They had both decided that they wanted to write their own vows and he was nervous. He had been stressing since they had decided but luckily Will was patient with him.
Looking at his suit on the hook he smiled and said, "You know, I'm glad that you got to come."
"Me too, I wouldn't miss it for the world." Will said
"I'm nervous."
"In a good way?"
"Yeah I think so."
"Then lets get you married."
Laughing he turned to hug his best friend. "Thank you for staying with me. I couldn't have done this with out you."
"I am glad that I get to be here for this and hey now you get to ditch the last name Henderson. I know you hate it. You'll be a Whispers now."
"Your right and I couldn't be happier to be a Whispers."
Separating he went to get ready to walk down the isle while Will smiled at him waiting to see if he needed help.
