it’s nice to have a friend

Summary:

jj and y/n have been best friends since the 3rd grade. (both secretly have had a crush on each other for longer than they can remember, but neither would ever tell a soul). y/n is john bs twin sister, 2 minutes older to be exact. john b never necessarily liked the fact of having to share almost everything with his twin, even his best friend, but y/n and jj have a special bond like no other.
is there a little more than “just friends” tho..?

Notes:

disclaimer: jj and y/n don’t confess their feelings in this fic, just friends who seem a little more than just friends with hints of affection

takes place around first half of s1

— also this is my first ever fic ! i’m not the best writer so bare with me but i really hope you enjoy this story.

Chapter Text

it was summer, school was out, and jj had to stop by and grab a few things from his house… and check in with his father. it’s not like luke cares to see his son anyways, but jj had been staying at the chateau like always. he practically lives there really, but on the occasion he had to go back there. to that house. just the thought of it makes him shudder.

so there jj was. at the steps of the house he could never call home. it was getting dark out, and he could feel the cool midsummer breeze.

he knew luke was there. he could see his sh*tty car parked in the dirt. he shook away the thought of his dad beating him up again, he knew what to expect with luke.

the blonde hesitated to open the door, his hands trembling. do i really wanna do this? jj thought. deciding to do so, he stepped into the house, making faint creaking noises as his black boots crept around to the living room. on the couch was luke, blacked out, bottles of beer and pills scattered across the coffee table.

jj kept quiet, his heart in his stomach. he made it to his room where he quickly shoved his backpack with more clothes, his favorite red hat, and some surf wax he had leftover in his drawer.

the boy looked around one last time at his bedroom. the surf posters, his drawings, and pictures of his friends, his best friends. besides having the worst dad in the world, he sure did have the best friends in the world, and honestly, that was enough for him.

as he threw his bag on his right shoulder and turned to the door, he accidentally knocked over some books on the shelf. the blonde cursed under his breath as they crashed to the ground. he scrambled to pick them up, messily throwing them back on the shelf, hoping with his life his clumsiness didn’t just wake his father.

luke was a light sleeper really, and jj was lucky enough he didn’t wake him from the start.

“j is that you?” luke muttered. jj froze. he could hear the anger in his fathers voice. he walked to the living room with his head down, he knew his fate already.

“sorry dad, i just needed to grab a few things and i’ll be out of your way.”

“out of my way—“ luke scoffs, “when are you not in my way, d*mn.”

“i’m really sorry dad..” jj didn’t know what to say, he really didn’t mean to wake him up.

luke sat up and took a sip of his beer. “yeah your sorry bout a lot of things, you ever tell the truth?”

jj didn’t know how to respond to this. he could feel a beating coming on and in that moment he felt so small and powerless.

luke then stood up, grabbed his jjs shirt and slammed him into the table. jj winced at the pain and tried to get up off the floor. luke started throwing punches cursing that jj was a disgrace. that he was worth nothing.

as much as the blonde tried to fight back his dad wouldn’t let him. jj began to feel numb as the punches kept coming, his vision went blurry and he could taste the blood pooling in his mouth.

luke stopped the violence when he felt satisfied with what he had done, and he stood back, watching jj slowly get up, defeated.

the boy didn’t dare to look at his father, he grabbed his backpack that was now across the room, and left the house as fast as he could. his body ached as he got on his motorcycle, and he didn’t even need to think where he was headed next.
