Work Text:

Sat under the bough of the large tree in that park the two of them were so fond of, the boys felt tranquil. The birds chirped and the wind whispered songs between them. It felt almost as if they were luxuriating in their escape from their homes. Or houses, should they say, since the houses didn't quite feel like a home. Brendon - the one with the red rimmed glasses that were translucent, light shining through them - sighed easily, oblivious to the sublime gaze Ryan was giving him. It was as if he were in awe simply gazing at him, as if Brendon were something that belonged to a museum for others to ogle at.

Ryan chuckled with sudden vitality, startling the boy with his unexpected liveliness. "What is it?" asked Brendon, who became present and not so zoned out anymore. His gaze was bleak, now bewildered. "Something funny?"

The corner of Ryan's mouth quirked up in an awkward half-smile. He wasn't invariably graceful as Brendon seemed to be. He always found a way to make anything and everything awkward. Brendon didn't hate it, perhaps he liked it. He enjoyed the candidness that constantly surrounded Ryan. "No, no, just," Ryan began - manifesting in his voice was hesitation, which rarely seemed to accompany his words - "may I have this dance?" There it was, that awkward half-smile returning to his softened face. Eventually, it turned into a smirk as he noticed the look on Brendon's face, bewildered again.

After a long moment that nearly made Ryan's smirk falter, Brendon manages, "Why not?"

And so they stood, and so they cavorted. The awkwardness ceased as they danced about, nearly tripping once or twice. It was a graceless dance, that Ryan will admit. But the peculiar aspect of their dance is what made it so fun. They were just two boys having childish fun.

That is, when Brendon does finally trip, falling and failing to catch himself. He lands on a parcel which had a gift inside of it. Perhaps for Ryan. Brendon mutters a curse under his lips, looking over, the solvent inside of a clear bottle twinkling in the sunlight. They were going to use it to clean up after their trip here.

"Bren, are you okay?" Ryan asked frantically, falling to his knees next to Brendon and checking for any laceration or cut of any sort. The silence buzzed uncomfortably between them, almost brittle in its vulnerability, until Brendon laughs. He just laughs. In a futile attempt at sitting up, he leans back on his elbows, tosses his head back, and laughing. "I'm fine!"
