“Truth or dare!”
“Hmmm.. truth!”
Sonic thought for a second, trying to figure out what question to ask Amy in their little game.
The two of them, along with Tails and Knuckles, were on a little picnic in an open field. It was a peaceful afternoon, and all that could be heard was the grass rustling and the birds chirping. The latter two had gone for a little stroll in the flowers, while the former sat on their picnic blanket, playing truth or dare to pass the time. It had been a few minutes since they had started, each of them already completing a number of simple dares and questions.
“Okay, let’s do an interesting one. What’s your favourite thing about me?”
Amy smirked, “Wow, Sonic. I mean, I knew you had a big head, but really?”
Sonic rolled his eyes playfully, elbowing her. “Shut up. Just answer the question.”
Amy giggled, then curiously looked to the clouds, trying to think of a way to respond. “Oh, you know a question like that isn’t easy for me to answer. There’s so much to like about you. Your cute crooked smile, your charming eyes, your bravery, your kindness, your love of adventure…”
“I said favourite thing, not things.”
“Aww but I can’t choose just one!! It’s too hard!!!”
“It’s just a game, Ames. You don’t have to take it so seriously.” Sonic chuckled at Amy’s determination at what seemed like such a trivial question.
“Umm.. fine. If I had to choose one thing, it’s probably your laugh. I love hearing it! But you know I love everything about you!”
“Alright, alright, I get it. I’m awesome.”
“Alright, truth or dare?” Amy asked.
“Hmmm, I've been doin’ dares all day, so how about truth?”
Now it was Amy’s turn to ask the blue hedgehog a question. She thought for a moment, but quickly found what she wanted to ask.
“Okay, now it’s your turn. What’s your favourite thing about me?”
“Huh?” Sonic blinked. He wasn’t expecting that. “You can't ask me the same thing!”
“Yeah I can, there’s no rule book, silly!” Amy stuck her tongue out mockingly. “So now, what’s your answer?”
Sonic opened his mouth to answer, but couldn’t figure out what to say. The question wasn’t as trivial as he thought it’d be, “Alright, gimme a sec to think…”
As he did so, Amy looked back up to the sky. She found herself being mesmerized by the clouds as they floated carelessly by. Her gaze drifted slightly lower as she admired the full picture in front of her. The canopy of bright blue and white, contrasting the colourful flowers of the field below. The sun’s rays enveloping it all in a golden glow, with spots of darkness scattered about from the clouds’ shadows. She saw Tails and Knuckles a bit away, laughing in the distance. She couldn’t help but be amazed at it all, completely forgetting where she was and what she was doing.
Sonic noticed this. He watched as she lost herself in the view.
And found the answer to her question.
“I think my favourite thing about you is…”
Amy turned to him. He wasn’t looking at her, but at the sight she was previously admiring.
“…how you see the world with so much love.”
The wind picked up slightly, causing both their quills to sway along with the grass. It was quiet for a moment, until Sonic continued.
“The way you look at everything… I’ve never seen anyone else do it like you. It doesn't even matter what it is — a starry sky, the ocean, or some random flower growing out of a crack in the sidewalk. You always have this look of wonder in your eyes, like you’re seeing it for the first time. Even if you’ve seen it like a million times before. It’s always the same. And I dunno… I think that’s kinda cool.”
Sonic finally looked towards Amy. He was expecting a huge reaction — squealing, gushing, or maybe even some teasing. But she just stared at him without saying a word.
Replaying everything that he had just said, his face flushed.
“Uh— s-sorry, that was probably too much,” He rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly very interested in the grass. “I didn’t mean to blab like that..”
He felt a hand gently land atop his. He turned to find Amy smiling warmly at him, and shook her head.
“That was the sweetest thing you’ve ever said…” she said softly. “Thank you..”
Sonic gave her a shy smile in return, “Heh, it’s nothin’..”
They locked eyes for a moment before they heard a call from the field. It was Tails calling Sonic to show him a cool bug he found. Sonic called back, saying he’d be there in a second.
“Well, this was fun, but I better see what he wants,” he stood up, stretching his arms above his head, “you comin’?”
Amy nodded, “I’ll come in a bit.”
“Alright!” he flashed her a smile as he zoomed off towards the others. Amy watched as all three boys hollered at the insect. She could hear Sonic’s laughter from here. Her favourite sound.
She smiled to herself.
Funny, she thought. He notices how I see the world, but he doesn’t realize that out of all the starry skies, oceans, and flowers…
…he’s the one I look at with the most wonder.
She let out a soft giggle before getting up to join her friends in the field.
