The Contest Prize

Summary:

What if Gwynn was actually the winner of that Canary's Quiz Whiz Contest?

Notes:

This OS is a translated version of something I previously posted in Spanish, which is my native language.

That’s why I wanted to try this little experiment. I translated it with the help of ChatGPT, just to see how it would be received. (The story itself is entirely written by me — I only used ChatGPT for the translation).

Anyway, if it gets a good reception, maybe (maybe) I’ll post more Gwynnary stuff in both languages in the future… maybe.

Work Text:

Today marked yet another edition of the famous Canary Quiz Whiz Contest, and as usual, everything was going exactly how it always did. Most contestants were knocked out in the very first round, leaving only a select few to advance.

The next challenge was simple: bring Canary’s Eelektross its favorite food.

At this stage, the remaining faces were… eclectic. A little girl and an unremarkable woman. Mani — a man who showed up to every single contest and had already won more times than anyone could count. Harmony, a completely new and unfamiliar face.

And of course, Gwynn — Canary’s best friend… and proud Canatic.

The round began, and everyone sprinted off in different directions, heading wherever they thought the answer would be.

But one of them knew better.

The Ghost-type trainer walked calmly instead of running, deep in thought. She knew that Canary’s ace absolutely adored Lumiose Galettes.

But that wasn’t the full answer.
“Eelektross likes those Galettes with MooMoo Milk.”

Canary’s voice echoed in her memory.
Being close to the streamer definitely had its perks. The problem was that while Gwynn knew there was a specific version of the galettes involved… she had no idea which café actually sold them.

Still, with that burning desire to win, she decided to make a master play.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Tarragon,” the gothic girl greeted politely as she stepped inside Racine Construction.

“Good afternoon, dear,” the older man replied warmly.

Gwynn grabbed a Lumiose Galette and a bottle of MooMoo Milk from the fridge, then turned toward the exit.

“See you later, Mr. Tarragon.”

“Take care.”

Yes… being Canary’s friend definitely came with advantages.

With the items secured, Gwynn returned to the contest venue for the verdict.

The little girl and the woman had brought regular Lumiose Galettes — immediate elimination.

Harmony and Mani, however, brought the correct ones: Super Lumiose Galettes from the right café.

But Gwynn’s decision to not only bring the correct treat, but to pair it with MooMoo Milk was more than enough to secure her victory.
Cheers and applause filled the venue.

Lucky, Mani thought.

Cheater, the little girl grumbled internally.

Please don’t let anyone find out Naveen fed me the answers, Harmony prayed.

None of that mattered.

Now that Gwynn had won, she had earned the right to make a request.

“Well then, darling — what’s your wish?” Canary’s hologram asked with a bright smile.
Gwynn didn’t hesitate. She had known her answer long before she even stepped into the contest.

Unlike the others, she knew the real Canary wasn’t behind that hologram.

“I want a girls’ date… with the real Canary.”

...

Gwynn and the real Canary were having coffee at Café Noveau, in Lumiose City’s central plaza.

“I still can’t believe you used your prize request on this. I mean, we literally hang out anyway,” the streamer said, teasing her.

“That’s true, but those meetups are usually really short because you’re always busy. Today I just… wanted to spend more time with you. You know, in person, not on Discord,” she replied nervously, avoiding eye contact.

“Yeah, okay, fair,” Canary said without thinking much about it. “Either way, gg. I’m just glad you won and not Mani again. His requests can get kinda creepy sometimes.”

“I can imagine...”

They stayed like that for a while, as usual. They drank their coffee the way they liked it, Canary talking nonstop while Gwynn listened. That was more or less their dynamic, and neither of them minded — it was how they felt most comfortable.

But what would truly be different would come after this moment — the point where they would normally be saying goodbye, if this hadn’t been a special occasion.

But it was a special occasion. Canary had cleared her entire schedule to spend the whole day with her winner. Normally she wouldn’t stretch something like this out for so long, but she made an exception for her friend.

What she didn’t know… was that there were hidden intentions behind it.

“Well, the coffee was great as always, but it’s time to head out. So, where to now, contest winner?” the blonde said cheerfully — but frowned slightly when she didn’t get a response. “G-Volt?”

When she turned around, the Ghost-type trainer was fidgeting with her fingers, staring at the ground.

It was time.

“C-Canary… do you… consider me someone you actually like?” Gwynn asked, her tone cautious.

“What? Girl, obviously. We’re literally besties.”

“And you, well… would you ever get mad at me?”

That one caught her off guard.

“Mad at you? Hello?? Oh my god, G-Volt, what could you possibly have done to make me mad at you, like, unironically?”

Silence lingered for a moment before Gwynn forced herself to continue.

“Let’s just say… I haven’t been completely honest about the reason for this date.”

“You haven’t? Wait, what do you mean? G-Volt, what are you talking about?”

Gwynn’s heart was pounding so hard she thought she might pass out. But deep down, she knew she had to be brave — or all of this would have been for nothing.

Noticing her strange behavior, Canary gently grabbed her shoulder, genuine concern replacing the teasing tone.

“Hey. Gwynn. Are you okay? If you’re not feeling well, we can go home and reschedule. I’ll make time.”

Gwynn looked up at her.

She looked so… beautiful. Her gaze was comforting. Supportive. Safe.

With a shaky breath, Gwynn gathered what little courage she had left.

“No, I’m fine. I just… need you to promise me something.”

“O-Okay. Yeah. What is it?”

Another breath.

“Promise me you won’t hate me after this.”
And before she could think twice, Gwynn stepped closer, pulled Canary’s mask down slightly — and pressed a quick kiss to her lips.
Silence.

Then reality hit.

The gothic girl immediately panicked.

“Okay, that’s it. Bye!” She turned to leave — only to feel someone grab her hand before she could take more than a step.

When she turned back, she saw something she had never seen before.

Canary — the famous streamer admired for her unstoppable energy — was blushing. So flustered she could barely meet her eyes.

Thankfully, her mask hid most of her expression.

Still holding Gwynn’s hand, she spoke, her voice softer than usual.

“W-Where do you think you’re going? Our date isn’t over.”
