Polished Butterflies

Summary:

You ask Castiel if you can paint his finger nails. He agrees.

Work Text:

Castiel does not understand the ritual at first. He is sitting at the bunker’s kitchen table, hands folded neatly, watching you rummage through a small zippered pouch like it contains all of heaven's and Hell's secrets.

“Is this a spell?” he asks cautiously.

You snort. “Yes, Cas. A very powerful one. It’s called cute.”

He blinks.

You turn around, holding up a tiny bottle of golden-yellow nail polish. “Can I paint your nails?”

There’s a pause. A long one.

Castiel looks down at his hands like they’ve personally betrayed him. “Is… something wrong with them?”

“No!” You reach for his fingers, cradling his hand gently. His skin is warm, calloused from blades and worn grips. “They’re perfect. I just thought it’d be fun.”

He studies your face carefully, like you’re a puzzle carved into ancient stone.

“You get joy out of painting my vessel's fingernails?”

“…When you say it like that, it sounds weird.”

He considers this. “I do not object to participating in activities that bring you joy.”

Your heart melts. "So that’s a yes?”

“…Yes.”

You light up like he just handed you the sun.

He sits very, very still. Too still. Like a soldier awaiting inspection.

“Cas, you can relax,” you laugh, unscrewing the bottle. “I’m not performing surgery.”

“You once said nail polish contains chemicals,” he replies seriously. “I do not wish to inhale them improperly.”

You lean forward and blow gently on his fingers. “There. Officially aerated.”

He watches you with that soft, attentive gaze he only ever uses on you. The first brushstroke goes on smooth and bright—warm honey yellow. He tilts his head. “It resembles… pollen.”

“It resembles bees,” you correct, smiling. “Because you like buzzing bumblebees.”

His brows knit slightly. “I once observed you watching a documentary on bee colony collapse. You appeared distressed. I attempted to eliminate several pesticide manufacturers.”

You freeze mid-brush. “…You what?”

“I did not succeed,” he clarifies calmly.

“Okay. Good. Let’s stick to nail art.”

By the time you’re done with the base coat, he’s watching your hands instead of the polish. You’re so careful. So focused. Tongue peeking out slightly when you concentrate.

He feels something warm in his chest that has nothing to do with his fading grace. “Why bees?” he asks quietly.

You shrug. “They’re small. People underestimate them. But they work hard. They protect their hive. They make sweetness out of the world.”

He’s quiet for a long moment.

Then softer he whispers. “That is… an admirable comparison.”

You glance up. “Comparison?”

He looks at you. Your heart stutters. “You remind me of them,” he says simply.

You nearly smear polish across his entire hand. “Cas—”

“You are often underestimated. You are gentle, yet capable of ferocity. And you create… warmth.” His thumb twitches slightly in your hold. “I find it… comforting.”

Your voice comes out small. “That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me.”

He looks confused. “It is merely an observation.”

“Yeah, well, your observations hit like love confessions.”

“…Oh.”

You both go very quiet. You clear your throat and pull out the tiny bee decals. “Okay. The main event.”

He watches intently as you carefully place one small black-and-gold bee on his ring finger. Then another on his thumb. “They are… symmetrical?” he asks.

“Mostly.”

He nods seriously. “Good.”

You finish with a clear top coat and hold his hands up to inspect your work.

Ten honey-yellow nails. Two tiny bees. Glossy and bright.

“They are aesthetically pleasing,” he decides.

You grin. “Do you hate them?”

He turns his hands in the light, studying them. “No.” A pause. “I enjoy that they were applied by you.”

Your smile softens. “That’s very sweet, Cas.”

He looks at you again, something deeper settling in his expression. “You are touching me under the pretense of artistic application,” he says thoughtfully.

You choke. “Cas—”

“I do not object.” Your face burns. He tilts his head slightly, almost shy. “If you wish to touch me without polish involved… that would also be acceptable.”

You set the nail polish down very slowly.

“…You’re unbelievable.”

He frowns faintly. “I am generally considered quite believable.”

You lean forward and kiss him. Soft. Quick. Honey-sweet. When you pull back, there’s the smallest, proud smile on his lips.

He glances down at his nails again. “I will not permit Dean to ridicule them.”

“Oh, he absolutely will.”

Castiel straightens. “I have smote armies.”

You laugh. “Yeah, but can you survive one sarcastic hunter?”

He considers. “…This may be my greatest trial.”

You take his painted hand and lace your fingers together carefully so the polish won’t smudge. The bees gleam under the bunker lights. And Cas decides—very quietly—that if this is what humanity feels like? He doesn’t miss Heaven at all.
