Work Text:
There is duty and desire
Best of friends, hatched from the same stock, growing up together only to become best of friends when very young still. Sometimes competing against one and other, but always coming back together. As friends.
Having each other’s backs was a must for any soldier, that much was true. But for Cody and Rex, it was so much more than that. The two having become inseparable since them being decanted and then to be growing into a bond so so strong it was difficult to see where one started and the other ended. As best of friends.
But then, something changed.
They grew up, becoming, adults. Troopers, soldiers of war.
Something clicking in place. Guess it was only inevitable for that to happen
Those pesky feelings from the ever so brief teenage years, the yearning, the desire for something …more. Something stronger than simple cuddling for warmth, a hug for good luck, a pat on the back…
No, it was much more than that.
It was quite clear for them both. Rex and Cody. The fact of this being so much more than simple friendship for either of them.
And yet, they were both on a hot streak on their way while rising up in the ranks and rather fast too.
Cody, becoming a Commander while Rex was on a fast track to become the Captain on his own merits. Each of them housing different traits for their positions despite having started from the same framework. The same DNA.
But that wasn’t the point for either of them, being the same or different, it did not matter to either of them. Their traits were their own. The growth of their persons.
Their duty always came first though, somewhat given for the as well.
And yet, there was no hiding the deep rooted desires they both felt for each other. Those ones they had perhaps always housed for one and other. The love, the yearning, the need to be touched by that one person in the whole wide galaxy.
The fumbles of the teenage years far behind for them and so, despite duty taking priority, a night out, in perfect freedom, changed it all for the two best of friends forever.
A few drinks in the bar.
The two were standing in the shadowy corners in each other’s company as per usual. Always levitating to the other no matter the people around them, even their other friends being around.
“Cody…”
“Yes, Rex?”
“I’ve… been thinking.”
“Bout what?”
“Bout the fact that we will be separated for a longest while when taking into the training courses for our future jobs.” Rex let out a nervous chuckle, having voiced the worry they both had in mind despite the bravado shown.
“I know, Rexy. Me too.”
“It’s not going to be easy. Being separated for so long.”
“No. It’s the longest we’ve been apart. Ever.”
“I know.”
“So, any ideas?”
“We can comm each other, every day?”
Cody had to laugh. But he knew Rex was trying to hide the fact that… well… how he really felt.
“Rexy, not what I meant.”
Cody’s hand reached for Rex, finding purchase under Rex’s chin, drawing the other man closer to himself suddenly.
Not that they had not hugged, clung onto each other before, but somehow, this was different.
“What did you mean then, Codes?” Rex’s voice gone all hoarse suddenly, Cody’s touch always did that to him, lately even more so.
“What I mean… is this.”
Cody felt daring suddenly.
It had been too long. The two having denied the side of themselves they clearly wanted to share with each other as well with the rest of it. The one involving the most intimacy shared between two people loving each other the way Cody and Rex did.
Drawing Rex in, all the way in. So close now, they were sharing the same air.
Cody’s lips on Rex’s soft and probing.
But Rex, always the more impatient of the two, did not want to wait any longer either. The permission finally given and so, Rex reached for Cody as well, drawing him impossibly close to Rex’s own body.
The kiss deepening fast, the two feeling the desire between them growing, but the need to breathe soon breaking them off from the passionate kiss.
They were panting, gazing into each other’s eyes.
“So, what’s next then? For us?”
“We get back to the barracks and seal this deal. For good.”
An airy laugh followed the statement.
“Sounds, like a great plan.”
“Mine always are.”
“Funny, I thought I was the planner.”
“Well, guess I am just better.”
They both laughed at that too.
But, it was most certainly the time. For at least this one night to spend it in each other’s arms before reality of their duty once again waited the next day.
