Interference (Leonard "Bones" Mccoy x Reader)

Summary:

You've finally made your way onto the enterprise as assistant chief of medical staff with your closest friend working as a nurse. However it means working with an old time friend and crush Leonard McCoy. Things are going well until you have some unwanted interference trying to nudge your relationship in the right direction. ( Let me know in the comments if I should change anything or if I should write more. I had a lot of fun writing this and definitely plan on writing more of these as I absolutely love Dr. Mccoy

Work Text:

"I can't believe it (y/n).” Your best friend Alice squealed, “We made it onto the enterprise" Your best friend Alice squealed as you exited the shuttle onto the famed ship.

You grin rolling your eyes," Alice it's really not that big of a deal." Alice gave you a playful shove teasing you," Please (y/n), I know how excited you are to be working as Assistant Chief of Medical, it's what you've been working towards all this time.” You flushed a little at her praise, as she continued,” Don’t look so flustered you deserve some bragging rights."

It made you happy hearing your friends praise but it did nothing to alleviate the nerves rising in your stomach settling in the form of a lump in your throat.

“Still I'm so nervous,” You say running your fingers through your messy auburn hair, trying to make it look somewhat presentable as you walked into the sickbay,” I don't even know who I'll be working with."

Alice stopped dead her tracks staring at someone, and you were about to ask what was wrong when she pulled you aside, she whispered harshly to you," No way is that the Leonard McCoy from Pre-med's?"

You could feel your heart leap into your chest as you followed the direction of her gaze, recognizing the tall southern Doctor with a familiar scowl on his face. Worrying you lip between your teeth,  ”No way…” You hissed between your teeth, ”I haven’t seen him in years, what is he doing here?”

” Well judging by his attire, I’d say he works here.” Alice smirked, devilishly,” And I think we just found out who you’ll be working closely with.”

Your heart thudded in your chest, and your head spun at the thought of working with Dr. Mccoy. It was no secret that the two of you had been friends for a while. You were the first to know about his divorce, when he showed up on your doorstep, drunk, sobbing and in need of comfort.

It was also no secret that she had a soft spot for him in her heart, but it wasn’t too shocking considering the history they had with each other.

"Oh my god, Alice what do I do!?" You whispered frantically, burring your face into her hands, your face starting to heat up.

" Well obviously you go, and you get a piece of that sweet hot southern ass." The flush on your face darkened as you swatted at your friend for even suggesting that you do anything of the sort with your co-worker. "Alice, what if he hears you!!!" You hiss at her as she giggled maniacally.

"God (y/n) I still can't believe you’re the same person that comment that you'd tap that if you weren't engaged.” Alice spoke serious, with a teasing undertone,” Come on you haven't had any fun since you broke off your engagement, consider this a second chance.”

Sometimes you wonder why you’re friends with her, but she’d always been a  good friend, and usually, she was right, "Aliceeeee..."

"Either way, you’d better figure out what to say because tall dark and southern is coming your way." She teased darting off leaving you alone to speak with Dr. McCoy.

You spin around to face him, and he flashes that signature smirk at you that always makes your heart melt. Swallowing you remind yourself to keep it together. " (y/n) it's been a while since we last met.” His voice lightly accented with that southern drawl,” don't tell me you're the one taking the Assistant CMO job." He asked making small talk.

“I’m afraid you're stuck with me.” You grin falling, heart-warming at the familiar feelings warming your chest, it really was good to see him,” How have you been Leonard?" You ask wondering considering the last time you met he’d been in tears. "I've been good and you." Dr.Mccoy answered butterflies fluttering in your stomach," I'm good."

~else where~

Alice was watching you two interact from afar sighing frustratedly,” God watching them flirt is like watching a bunch of prepubescent teens having sex for the first time."

"Tell me about it." Alice heart leapt out of her chest as a man wearing a golden shirt appeared behind her" Shit, who the hell are you!?" She asked, pressing a handing over her heart.

The man flashed a charming white smile at Alice," I apologize for startling you, Captain James T. Kirk, and you are?" She looks him over not sure if she really believed him to be the Captain of the Enterprise. He certainly was dressed for the job.

" Alice.” She finally answered him, “How do you know Leonard?" She said looking over this man knowing his type.

"Well, I'm his best friend of course." Jim answer, sounding flabbergasted at the idea of someone not knowing this information,” And let me tell you I know first hand that Bone’s is terrible at flirting, try being his wingman.

“I actually have a proposition for you.” He told her,” Something to move things along between the two of them.” His bright blue eye twinkling mischievously.

Alice felt her lip tug into a grin,” I’m listening.” And that’s how she and the Captain spent the afternoon plotting on how to get you and Bones together.

Beginning a week of misfortune for you and the good doctor, filled with getting locked in closets, getting left alone together, and conveniently bumped, so you end up in his arms.

Making a complete fool of yourself, still completely oblivious to this plan and the man people taking bets on whether or not it’ll be successful.

 ~Later That Week~

Alice groaned," How can two people be so oblivious?" Jim was slouched watching as you made your rounds around the Sickbay, eyes on your PADD not paying attention to where you going being on a direct collision course with Dr. McCoy.

“There’s still hope yet, Alice.”He pointed out, as they both watched anxiously on baited breath to see how this scene played out.

Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go as planned not even making it far enough to make the collision, tripping on a loose cord. Crashing directly into Bones, sending him careening backward with a crash, and unpleasant snap.

Jim brought a hand to his mouth hissing,” That didn’t sound pleasant.” He mumbled.

Shaking your head slightly you were a little dazed by the fall, shaking your head slightly when a groan brought you back to reality. It finally clicking in your brain as you realize who broke your fall, panic filling your chest as you quickly got off of him.

“Oh my god, are you okay?” You asked feeling mortified, dread feeling your stomach.

Mccoy nodded,” I think so…” He answered uncertainly, trying to push himself up wincing,” Nope, not fine.”

He sat there clutching his wrist in pain,” You broke my wrist, how the hell did you manage that!!!?” He snapped, the tension of the long day wearing on his frayed nerves.

You were already horribly embarrassed, but also a little irritated,” How in the world should I know?” You snap back,” I don’t keep loose cords lying around for people to trip on.” That doesn’t stop you from helping him up so that you treat his injury.

Scanning his arm, you find that sure enough, you did break his wrist. Cursing under your breath, as this was just your luck. “Well, it’s not the worst break I’ve seen.” She told him, “ I’ll take care of it for you.”

Leading him to an exam table you made quick work of resetting the bone. “Ow.” He flinched,” Damn it woman be careful.”

You rolled your eyes at his nonsense,” Stop moving and maybe it wouldn’t hurt so much, you big baby.” You teased softly being a little more gentle

Your friends watched from afar, Alice chuckling,” Not exactly what I hoped for, but it’s progress.” She said rubbing the back of her neck sheepishly, the two of you bickering like an old married couple.

“Hey, I’m just impressed that she got him to sit still long enough to actually help him,” Jim commented, watching his friend with a fond smile on his face.

~

“There that wasn’t too bad, it’ll take some a couple weeks to heal.” You told him, but he just rolled his eyes,” I know that I also a Doctor after all.”

For some reason, everything he was saying right now made your blood boil,” How about a thank you I could have just left you there!!!” You snapped, causing him flush at your tone he grumbled out a quick thank you avoiding eye contact.

“I got to get back to work.” You told him leaving in a huff, still pissed that he had even taken that tone with you. You were an adult for crying out loud not a child.

It took some time for you to cool off, but it helped that a few staff came in from engineering. You chided the young engineers about being more careful with their health as you quickly got to work patching them up.

After a long day of work, you retired to your shared office with Dr. McCoy to do some paperwork. You didn’t look up when the door opened, and he entered the room, even though you weren’t mad at him anymore you still wanted to make him squirm a little bit.

Clearing his throat awkwardly, you decided to spar him looking up to find him hold a bouquet of flowers. A small smile toyed at your lips as he swallowed hard. “(y/n) it’s come to my attention that I may have acted a bit rash earlier.”

You snorted, amused,” A bit.” You mumble sarcastically.

“Alright it was completely out of line the point is I wanted to apologize.” He told her, averting his gaze,” So if you wouldn’t mind I’d like to invite you dinner to make up for it.”

You smiled as his eyes avoided yours,” Why Leonard Mccoy, are you asking me out?”

Bone’s shuffled awkwardly,” Well I won’t force you, I mean if you're still upset about earlier.” You stood up pressing a kiss to his cheek watching him turn red,” I’d love to but let’s not tell Jim otherwise the whole crew will know and I know him, and the rest of the crew have been placing bets all week."

“Agreed.” He said smiling glad that you had accepted his offer and you left your paperwork behind figuring it could wait another day you had a date with a handsome doctor. A delightful ending to a long grueling day.
