Work Text:
Yin stood in front of the mirror, staring intently at her face, studying every little bit of it. She felt so awkward. It wasn’t a problem most of the time, but whenever she was faced with her own appearance, suddenly all of her confidence was gone. She considered changing clothes. Perhaps putting on one of the few skirts she’d managed to get her hands on. But she was scared. Because they always looked nice when she just looked down and saw them. But when she saw herself in the mirror wearing them, it just seemed wrong. She sighed.
“You okay?” She turned to find Parrot leaning on the doorway to their room. He looked mildly worried, but it felt lighthearted.
“Yeah.” She replied, fiddling with her hair. She should retie the bun, it was coming loose. “Just thinking.”
“About what?” He asked, a small smile finding its way onto his face. He took a few steps toward her.
“Oh, y’know.” She turned back to her reflection, now seeing Parrot behind her as well. That made her feel better. “The disconnect.” That word described the feeling in her gut pretty well.
“Ah.” Parrot said, nodding in understanding. “Yeah, I get that.”
He kept moving forward until he was side by side with her, both being reflected back in the mirror. It felt more right to see herself with him by her side.
“Do you wanna do anything about it?” He averted his eyes from the mirror, looking at her. She looked back.
“Like what?” She tilted her head like a confused puppy. He laughed at that.
“I don’t know. Do you wanna change clothes? Maybe put some make up on?” He shrugged, looking away for a second before meeting her gaze again.
“Not really. I just… wish I could look like myself, I guess.” She answered, but it sounded more like a question.
“Been there.” Was Parrot’s reply. He looked back to their reflections on the mirror, his hand shifting to hold hers. “I still feel like that sometimes.”
“What? You look great!” She said, shocked at the idea of Parrot ever feeling dissatisfied with his appearance.
“Yeah, but… there’s still some things. Why do you think I wear so many layers all the time?” He asked with a jokey tone, but it was clear the feelings behind it were earnest.
“This again? Your waist to hip ratio is fine, stop it.” She matched his joking cadence, rolling her eyes exaggeratedly.
“Yeah, of course you’d like it.” He teased, making Yin sputter.
“That’s not- don’t twist my words!”
“Am I wrong tho?”
“...No.”
The awkwardness was all but gone now. She was lucky to have someone like Parrot with her.
