Work Text:
Kyle sighed as they reached another dead end. Him, Lonnie and Rogelio were sent out on a mission but none of them could agree which way was the right one. They're meant to be helping out at one of the troops' watch stations, but it feels like they’re going in circles.
Kyle knows which way they're meant to be going, and he knows why they're going wrong. But every time he tries to say something he gets dismissed or talked over, and the next time someone interrupts him when he's just trying to help he's going to lose it.
“Rogelio for the last time we don't need to go left, we need to go right” Lonnie shouts at Rogelio.
They've been at it for the past ten minutes, when actually they're both wrong. What we need to do is turn around and keep going in that direction. At the very start they went the wrong way. He starts to say as much when Lonnie says something directed to him.
“Kyle I don't know what you look so annoyed for, You've barely contributed” She scoffed.
“I've barely contributed? You're the one who won't listen to me whenever I try to suggest anything” He shot back in disbelief. “Did you not stop to think that I would help you if you actually gave me the chance to?”
“Well your suggestions are normally wrong so why should I listen to-” She tries to argue back before he interrupts her.
“We're you not the one who just told me about how I should make more suggestions? Why would you be upset if you're just going to ignore them anyway!”
Lonnie starts to speak before he talks over her
“I swear to god if you try to interrupt me one more time. I've been trying to tell you why we can't find the watch tower for the past half an hour but have you listened to me once? No! Because apparently you know so much better than I do despite you continuously giving the wrong directions. You're the reason we went wrong originally! You made the wrong turn towards the rock when we should have been going in the opposite direction.”
“Okay, well that's one example of you being right, you're still the most incompetent out of all of us so you can't blame me for ignoring your suggestions, you mess things up constantly” She argues, and here we go again. You can never criticise anything she does because she gets too defensive.
“That's not even true! Sure I'm physically not the strongest but that doesn't automatically make me the weakest link! You mess up about as much as I do, I just don't point out every little thing like you do! This is constant with you. You could make twenty mistakes, but I make one and all of a sudden it's ‘not again Kyle’ or ‘really Kyle? You need to do better’. And chances are you're not ever going to actually grow up and accept that you make mistakes because God forbid you're ever wrong about something! Because you're so perfect and can never make a mistake despite you being wrong all the time. And whenever things go wrong because of your fuck ups, it's me who gets the blame! Do you know the amount of times I get in trouble when I've done nothing! The amount of rations I've had revoked, or the amount of sleep I've lost because I had to do extra training as punishment! All because you can't grasp the
concept of responsibility.” Kyle finally stops, breathing heavily from the shouting.
Lonnie looks at him with a stricken expression which only makes him scoff.
“Kyle, I-I’m sorry, okay? Just calm down.” She tries to apologise, stopping when he glares at her.
Rehelio tries to step in, and ask him to forgive Lonnie, which only serves to make him turn on him.
“You're not exempt from this either, Rogelio! You have not stood up for me once! I always stick up for you when someone's giving you trouble for your appearance, when have you ever returned the favor!” he takes a breath to calm down, sighing before continuing to speak.
“Look, I don't want to fight with both of you, but I can't keep doing this. I can't keep being the one to always take the fall no matter what and I can't keep being your scapegoat. Let's just get on with the mission and we can talk about this later. But if nothing changes I'll stop sticking my neck out for you. I refuse to continue being the only one to keep giving in this friendship, okay?”
“I- okay Kyle. But for what it's worth I'm, uh.. I'm sorry.” she tells him, and she genuinely does look remorseful, so he accepts it with a ghost of a smile.
Rogelio grunted in agreement, and Kyle took in a breath before apologizing for shouting but Regelio only shook his head, as if to say ‘no need’.
They listened to him and started to turn around to the right direction and Kyle had a small bit of hope that maybe this time things will change. Not all at once, and there'll probably be more arguments to come, but it'll get better
