Lucius never intended to notice – he didn’t want to – but when his gaze flitted down, it caught on the way her new position directly in front of the roaring fire had rendered the baggy edges of her nightdress gauze-like.

She was a silhouette and nothing more, the truly intimate details of her body granted the discretion of shadow. All the same, to see the gentle curves of the sides of her small breasts and the shadowy slope of her waist transitioning to the flare of her hips made his stomach drop as though he’d just missed a stair, the amused curve of his lips faltering and fading.

There was something about the combination of the warm light, the suggestive shadows, and the floaty folds of the nightgown that affected him. It softened a body he had come to associate with violence, resistance, and pain; lent it a sensuality that he had thought himself long past capable of discerning.

At her thighs, Hermione’s fingers began to agitatedly fist in her nightdress, lifting it just a fraction. Ankle. Shin. Real flesh where before there had only been shadow and imagination.

“What?” As though Hermione’s voice held a leash to Lucius’ eyes, his gaze was yanked back to her face. “What is it?”
