Chapter 1: Kurana

Chapter Text

“Gahi, Gahi! Tell me the story of my ancestors!” Francesca demanded.

Yeonjun smiled softly, gesturing for Francesca to climb into his lap. The other pups all gathered around, sitting on the floor.

“Well, it started thousands of years ago, before the Golden Ages, when the first magic being was born. We don’t have many records of the first of your ancestors, or a lot of the ones who came after, but we do have a lot of history written about Kurana, one of the most famous magic incarnated in the world.”

The sounds of a pup crying were heard as nurses bustled throughout the room. They were resolutely ignoring the pup in the crib under orders of their king. The pup was currently glowing like a candle.

Atlas interrupted, “The first magic being was a Nightlight? Like Eomma!”

Yeonjun nodded, smiling fondly. “Yes, just like your eomma.”

A woman stepped into the room dressed in regal clothing. She was followed by whispers from the nurses and maids of the palace. They were whispering about the king’s mistress and the glowing pup, an illegitimate princess.

However, the queen didn’t care about all of that. She didn’t care if the pup wasn’t hers, she loved the pup as if it were her own pup, glowing or not. This pup grew into a little girl named Kurana, or Ronnie as everyone referred to her. Her birth sparked the beginning of what Magicfolk now call the Golden Ages. When she was born, people found that their children were able to perform magic.

Ronnie was loved by everyone who met her. She had all the servants and maids in the castle wrapped around her small finger. Despite being spoiled rotten, she was a kind and loving little girl. She made friends with anybody she came across.

Ronnie may have been the first to have magic but she was not the last. Instead, hundreds of pups around the world began to be born with magic. There were rumors of pups floating out of their cribs at night, pups who could speak without ever opening up their mouths, and pups who could create fire at their fingertips. There were pups who could move from one place to another in the blink of an eye, pups that could change the weather, and pups who glowed just like Ronnie did. And so much more.

Soon, nonhumans evolved into their magic. Different species such as vampires and werewolves emerged. Some pups grew fangs sharper than knives and others grew beautiful, shimmery wings. Some were born with tails and could breathe underwater while others were born with veins filled with fire. These people began to be known as Magicfolk by those who had no magic. The Magicfolk embraced this title.

Soon, all magic creatures could be split into five categories. The Lunae, The Aetheriae, The Fae, The Merfolk, and The Netherworlders. The Lunae were creatures of the night. All those born under the moon, like vampires and werewolves. The Aetheriae were creatures of the sky and land. All those born with bird wings or pointed ears, like the elves and the elytrians. The Fae were those born of sky and magic, like the fairies and the pixies. The Merfolk were those born of water, like the sirens and merlings. And the Netherworlders were those born of fire. The blazebornes and the ghasts.

“Do you want to know something interesting?” Yeonjun asked, interrupting his own story.

The pups nodded enthusiastically, so Yeonjun told them, “The Magic Incarnate is always a girl. And that girl always comes from a completely female bloodline.”

Francesca’s eyes widened and she had a look of awe on her face. “No boys?” The girls all had grins on their faces, while Atlas pouted at the fact that his sisters were so excited about there being no boys.
