Work Text:
Lunchtime! The only joy in Kira's day, where he could finally have some alone time- that is, until Reimi stopped him on his way out.
"Kira...!" she called. "Do you wanna eat with me and Aya today?" she asked with a sweet look and a smile.
Normally, he'd decide to go outside and eat his lunch (that he made himself, of course) in peace, away from his rowdy classmates. But today, he figured it would be fine to eat with her and her friend for a change. He sat in their corner and began eating. Aya carefully scanned him, suspicious. There was something weird about him that she couldn't put her finger on. Didn't Reimi just say he was creepy a week ago? Oh no... did something juicy happen while they worked on that project together (she'd have to ask Reimi later)?
What did Reimi see in this guy? Kira just made everything more awkward; not for any concrete reason, he just did. He had an aura about him that was, not to be rude, creepy. Finally, Aya broke the silence by pointing at him with her chopsticks and saying, "You remind me of someone..." She took a magazine out of her bag and flipped through it until she stopped on a page and showed it to Reimi.
"Doesn't he look like him? Except like... a more tired, scary looking version of him...?" Aya excitedly asked her.
"I don't really see it..." Reimi said, looking back and forth between Kira and the magazine.
Aya huffed and said, "Well, maybe you don't, but if you look carefully he and Kira have almost the same facial structure. I think because he's got makeup to make him look nice you don't see it, but if Kira had the right makeup, he'd look exactly like him!"
"Oh no no NO. You're NOT doing my makeup," Kira interjected.
"Come on Kira! I've never done a guy's makeup before, and it won't be too bad; it'll be natural makeup. I'll definitely get rid of those bags under your eyes and make you look a lot more lively," Aya replied.
"Natural makeup?" Kira scoffed, "I think I look natural enough already. Besides, the people who did his makeup are professionals. A teenage girl with a kit is hardly what I'd call professional."
"I-I'm professional! At least, I'm going to be... My point being, I won't make you ugly. And if you end up hating it that much, you can just wash it off."
Aya gave him a pleading look. Kira raised an eyebrow. There weren't really any benefits to it, but there weren't really any risks either. He figured he had nothing to lose.
"Oh alright, if it'll get you to shut up about it."
Success!
Aya got out her tools from her bag.
"You carry those everywhere with you?" Kira asked.
"Of course! You never know when you need them," Aya replied.
As she was preparing her tools, he saw a humanoid figure behind her. He shrugged it off and figured it was because he was starting to feel a little sick. It was probably a trick of the light.
"Okay, Kira, I'm going to need you to close your eyes."
Was it be because of the figure? No, he was being ridiculous, right...?
"What? Don't look at me like that, I just don't want to accidentally get any makeup in them."
He obeyed, decided to treat this like some strange medical procedure, and waited until she was finished.
Once Aya was done, she giggled and said, "Kira, you can open your eyes now."
She held a mirror up to his face. Something seemed to have changed about him, but he wouldn't let her know that.
"Hmph. I look exactly the same."
"You really think so?" Aya looked to Reimi. "What do you think?"
Reimi rested her chin on her hand. "Hm... Well, it's not super obvious or anything, but there is definitely something a little different about him. Like... a slight lift in his face... a little brighter looking, if that makes sense?"
"Ah, see, Kira! If Reimi thinks you look different, then you must!" Aya said with conviction, crossing her arms over her chest. Kira rolled his eyes.
"I think I'll go to the library now," he said. He's had enough of this makeup nonsense.
"I'll go with you-" Reimi started getting up.
"No thanks, I'll be fine by myself," he said brusquely.
"Oh, ok..." Reimi sat back down, disappointed. Once he left, Aya started bombarding her with questions.
"Why do you like him all of a sudden? Did something happen at your place?"
"Um.... well...." Reimi could feel her face burning up.
"Wait, let me guess. The quiet guy turns out to be not so quiet. Right?"
"Yeah... Pretty much."
"Well, I'm happy for you Reimi, I really am, but I'd be careful if I were you. I'm not saying he's not a good guy, but I'd get to know him better before you jump into anything."
"I wasn't going to! What do you think of me, Aya? That kiss... it meant nothing, anyway."
"You really think so?" Aya asked, surprised.
"Think so? We both KNOW so," Reimi said, a bit sadly. "He hasn't treated me any different since then."
"Oh, ok." Aya was relieved. She lowered her voice. "I don't want you to rush into anything, especially after those rumors I heard about Kawajiri and Shinobu in class 3-B."
"They're a year above us, Aya. How do you expect me to know who you're talking about?"
"That doesn't really matter, the important part is that Shinobu doesn't even love him! She was pressured into dating him and now she can't break up with him because of her pride! And I think there was a marriage proposal! At least, that's what I heard...!"
Reimi looked at her suspiciously; Reimi wasn't one to believe in rumors. "Don't be ridiculous, Aya... Besides, I have plans on how to get to know him. I'll invite him to a weekend outing with my family..." Reimi's face lit up, like she remembered something important. "In fact, I should do that right now, since lunch is almost over! See you later Aya!"
As she ran off, Aya sighed. She'd be sure to keep a close eye on them. Reimi is the type to fall in love with any guy who does something nice for her, so Aya felt it was her duty to be something of a guardian angel for Reimi. Hm, maybe she'll follow her from a distance. Aya packed up her stuff and, as she started walking down the hall, she heard some commotion coming from outside. Aya decided to investigate, and who did she see but Kira! He seemed to be confronting... Who was that? Isn't that the guy who has a crush on Reimi? Aya watched from a distance; she could help, but she didn't want to get hurt, plus it wouldn't make for a very good story, would it?
"Kira, a little bird told me they saw you leaving Reimi's house. There's no way someone like her would willingly spend time with you; you better not have messed around with her!"
"Oh, you're one of those people, aren't you. Does Reimi even know who you are?" Kira taunted.
"I just... I just care a lot about her, ok?" he said, blushing. "But nevermind that," he puffed his chest. "I don't know why, but you seem a lot more punchable today. Did you do something with your hair? Did Reimi help you when you were over at her house?" he asked.
"Actually-" Kira started, but the boy didn't give him time to respond and socked him in the eye.
"What's that stuff you have on your face?" he said, shaking his hand. "Is that.... Eyeliner? Blush? Why are you wearing makeup?"
Kira didn't bother answering the question. He could feel his anger begin to bubble to the surface. He wanted to hurt him, punch him back, kill him!
"L-look what you did to me! I can't see! I can't see! My eye is bleeding! You... You...!" He couldn't find the words to say. His rage was throwing everything out of balance. He could feel tears welling up in his eyes.
Aya was getting ready to intervene. To tell the truth, she was kind of glad this happened. Her intention was to give him makeup that made him appear more infuriating, but she didn't think it'd actually work! Suddenly, she saw Reimi come into the scene from the other side. Let's keep watching, then!
"Kira! There you are, I was looking everywhere for you!" Reimi said. She saw that he was covering his eye with his hand. "Oh no, what happened? Let's get you to the nurse! Can you walk by yourself?"
Kira smirked at the boy, a silent declaration of his victory over him, at least in terms of their relationship with Reimi. The boy ran off while Reimi was occupied, not wanting her to know he did this to Kira. Aya decided this would be a good time to join them.
"Aya, I'm so glad you're here! Help me take him to the nurse." Reimi said.
"No, you don't need to do that," Kira interjected. "I can still see out of one of my eyes, can't I? I can go by myself."
"Sure, Kira whatever you say," Aya replied, and they hoisted him up on their shoulders and made their way to the nurse's office despite his protests.
"That's gonna leave a pretty bad black eye," Aya said. "If you want, I could give you some makeup that would make it less obvious."
"Yeah, no thanks, Aya. I think I've had enough of your makeup," Kira replied.
Aya chuckled. "Fair enough, though your face is so fun to work with. Anyway, Reimi, didn’t you have something to ask him?" Aya winked at Reimi.
"Oh, yeah! This is, uh, probably a terrible time, but I was wondering if you wanted to go to the beach with me and Aya on Sunday! I mean, the sun probably isn't good for your eye, so I understand if you can't come, but I really hope you can, yeah..." Reimi blushed. She must've sounded so stupid...
"I'll think about it. Is it just you and Aya?"
Reimi was surprised. He's actually considering? "Well, my family will be there too. And don't worry, Arnold's gonna be staying at our neighbor's house, I remember how much you don't like dogs."
"That's great! I'll ask about it when I get home, then."
"Really?!" Reimi exclaimed. Oops, she sounded a bit too excited. Keep it cool, Reimi! As they got to the nurse's office they set him down in a chair. "I'll wait until then...?"
Kira just nodded in reply, which was enough for Reimi. Any longer and she would've exploded from embarrassment. She and Aya left him in the office to wait for his examination. He could hear Aya teasing her outside the office about the way she asked him. What is in Aya's makeup? Did it somehow literally change the structure of his face? He can't believe he agreed to let her do that to him; there's no way he'd ask her to do that again. Reimi's offer, on the other hand... It's not like he truly wanted to go to the beach, but it did sound kind of nice. A relaxing day with friends... that's what they are, right? Friends... He could get used to having friends for a change.
