The Other Side Of The Screen

Summary:

David Temple has tried to block out his rather...wild upbringing. However, it's becoming increasingly harder to do as the people from his childhood have reunited to contribute to the world's biggest computer simulation yet. And its all centred around a place he never wants to go back to: Perdido Beach.

Will he try to fix what went wrong? Or will he become just like the boy on the other side of the screen?

(Gone AU)

Notes:

This is the first time I've written a fanfic since my wattpad days, with my shabby warrior cats AU. My writing isn't great and my motivation does me no favours but I hope someone can enjoy this regardless :-)
Apologies for the short prologue!

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

10:18pm, 10th of November, 2008.

The boy would've much rather not stand there in the rain, letting the weight of his actions soak in. His favourite jumper was so wet it clung to his arms, droplets dripped from his hair and onto his shoulders.

It always rains at the most inconvenient time. Oh well, I needed to wash my hair anyway. He thought grimly.

He rung his hair out, water splashing onto his school shoes. They were definitely ruined now.

The girl, smart enough to wear a coat, was the first to turn and trudge onwards through the woods, mud squelching beneath her brown boots, her breathing shaky.

"Hey, look." He called out, catching up to her. "He did this to himself."

She made a strange noise, a choked off cry, wrapping the hood tighter around her head. Her cheeks were damp, and the boy was sure that it was not the rain that made them that way.

"It's not our fault! He just...took it all so seriously." He shrugged, arm brushing against hers. She leaned away from him.

The action annoyed him a little, but he pushed that feeling away. "If anyone asks, you were hanging out with me, yeah? We were uh...playing games in my room."

She finally responded. "So why did I need to call you, then?"

"Um. You were calling someone else and accidentally called me?" he suggested.

"...and I didn't try to call the actual person after 'accidentally' calling you?" The girl retorted, glaring down at him.

He looked away, avoiding her accusing gaze. "I'm only giving you ideas. Maybe you could be a tiny bit grateful that I even decided to help you."

She grabbed him by the shoulders, and he felt as if she was staring straight into his brain. The brain that was on overdrive, full of panic, guilt, fear, and anger. He knew by the look on her face that the girl was experiencing much of the same emotions. "You decided to help me because you're just as responsible as I am. So stop with this 'he did this to himself!' bullshit."

Her eyes were wild. Her face was anguished. And her words were venom as she let him go.

"We killed that kid. We killed him, David."
