Chapter Text
Camp had grown quieter around him.
Not warm — not yet.
But no longer hostile.
The worst had passed.
The attacks had stopped.
The whispers had dulled.
The stares had softened into something closer to caution than hatred.
Luke noticed the change, but he didn’t cling to it.
He wasn’t trying to earn it anymore.
He wasn’t the head counselor anymore, or the one everyone automatically turned to.
The weight of every Hermes kid, every unclaimed camper, every crisis — that belonged to someone else now.
Travis carried it, and Luke let him.
Even when the Stoll brothers pulled something spectacularly ill‑advised, even when a younger camper struggled and the old instinct to step in tugged at him, he held back.
He understood the boundaries.
He understood what he had forfeited.
He had made terrible mistakes.
People had died because of him.
That truth would stay with him for the rest of his life.
But he wouldn’t let it swallow him anymore.
He would let the past teach him, let its weight temper him instead of break him.
And he stayed.
Not out of obligation, or fear, or lack of options.
Something inside him had simply… settled.
The restless urge to move on, the tension that always crept in when he stayed anywhere too long — it had faded.
Camp no longer felt like a temporary stop or a place he endured for someone else’s sake.
It felt like somewhere he could grow.
Somewhere he could remain.
And as he watched the younger campers — their uncertainty, their raw potential, their fear — something shifted in him.
Nothing defined.
Nothing he could put into words.
Just a quiet sense that staying here meant more than simply having a place to stand still.
His focus remained on learning, on steadying himself, on seeing his training through.
But beneath that, almost too soft to notice, was the feeling that Camp held a purpose for him he hadn’t fully understood yet.
Whatever it was, it would come in its own time.
