Kim Chaewon hated Jeong Hayeon.
Her smile made her heart do something weird and she hated that there was a small part of her that liked her company.
“Chaewon-ah are you ready for school?” Kotone, her pretty much older sister, asked her. She finally snapped out of her trance. Chaewon groaned dramatically as she put on her school uniform, “No Tone-unnie I don't because I don't want to see Jeong Hayeon’s stupid face.”
Kotone clicked her tongue with a smile, “I swear you two are so in love.”
Chaewon stopped packing her bag to shoot a glare at Kotone before rushing out the door to school, and Kotone followed right behind her.

Hayeon was waiting for Nien to finally get herself out of her house. The uniform was wrinkled and the morning air was cold and she was freezing. Nien emerged with her smile that could light up a room. Hayeon was still mad at her for being late though, she would have been in school at this time by now.
“Nien-unnie can we try not being late on the first day of school?” Hayeon huffed.
“Well no! Seoyeon was calling me and I had to respond!” Nien chuckled with an even bigger smile.
“Are you two dating or what?” Hayeon teased Nien.
“Wha– NO?” Nien stuttered with her face an unexplainable shade of red. “Seoyeon has a girlfriend, Kim Yooyeon.”
“Plus you know I have a crush on Chaewon’s friend.” Nien says with her cheeks flushing.
Hayeon rolled her eyes into the back of her head at the mere mention of her name, “Her name is Kotone right?” A quiet high-pitched giggle left Nien’s lips, “Yeah it is.”
“God I hate gay people.” Hayeon huffed as she trudged to school with Nien.

She was in class now, and the teacher conveniently put Hayeon and Chaewon together. Hayeon huffed as she placed her backpack down next to her.
Nien was watching from across the classroom sitting conveniently right next to Kotone who was busy writing in her notebook to notice Nien playing with her pencils. “Can you enjoy this a little bit less unnie?” Hayeon hissed quietly over to the older girl.
“Are you kidding, this is comedy gold.” Nien giggled, “True karma.”
“Fuck you man.” Hayeon cursed.
“You’ll thank me sooner or later.” Nien shrugged at her.
Then the class started and they all turned towards the board. “Can you pay attention at least, you’re being so distracting.” Chaewon hissed at the vampire. Hayeon leaned back in her chair, “What? you looking at me too much and suddenly I’m the problem?”
Chaewon’s face went red before she sighed and went back to writing her notes.
“You can say that again.” She muttered under her breath.
“What?” Hayeon inched closer to the human’s face, it was way too close for comfort.
“Nothing.”
Hayeon made a humph sound with her breath as she slid a note to her. Chaewon snatched it coldly as she opened it with an unamused look on her face.
As much as your face looks stupid you are funny Kim Chaewon. In Hayeon’s sprawled handwriting, the bell rang and Hayeon dashed for the door faster than Nien could catch up to her.
“YAH! Jeong Hayeon!” Chaewon shouted to her.
The human huffed as she gripped the note in her hand. She still had about a few more hours in school including a night tutoring class with Kotone. So she stepped out of the classroom and walked down the hallway to Kotone’s class.
“Fucking trackstar isnt she?” Kotone chuckled, as her and Chaewon walked to their tutor’s classroom. “God she’s so annoying.” The human groaned.
“But she’s pretty.” Kotone added.
“So is Nien.” Chaewon retorted.
“Okay don't distract me.” Kotone warned her with a finger to her lip. “We are talking about you two right now.”
The human rolled her eyes as they trudged their way into their tutor’s room.

Hayeon was waiting outside the tutor’s classroom.
She had the stupid, devious plan of scaring the shit out of Chaewon. The classroom door creaked open and Hayeon shouted ‘boo’ at the top of her lungs with her hands outstretched like claws of a creepy monster.
Kotone took a small stumble into Chaewon. That wasn't the victim the vampire was expecting. Chaewon stared for a second longer than she meant to. She didn't know how to react. The older human laughed as she fully processed what was going on the younger one wasn't having it though.
“Really?” The human asked with a small huff. “You gave poor Tone-unnie a heart attack.”
“Ah Chaewon-ah it's okay.” Kotone joked, putting her arm around her. Chaewon scowled at Hayeon who was still giggling.
Hayeon shrugged like it meant nothing. “She didn't seem too scared.”
“Fuck you.” Chaewon hissed.
Hayeon turned to her, and for a brief second, the teasing in her expression gave way to something gentler.
“Hold on, let me get something.” Chaewon’s annoyance stopped for a second. The offer felt so off putting especially from the vampire. A gift from Hayeon usually entailed getting stupid shit she didn't ask for but this actually felt genuine.
She nodded, smirking a little bit. Waiting for whatever this gift could possibly be.
Hayeon didn’t say anything more. She simply reached into her pocket and pulled out the keyring. It was of Chaewon’s favorite color and thing, a light purple background with a pink bow in the middle.
Hayeon placed it gently into Chaewon’s hand and closed her fingers over it. It was just a small object. Nothing fancy.
“Now we match,” Hayeon said with a half-smile, while whipping her backpack around to the same keyring just with different colors.
Chaewon didn’t answer right away. She was too busy trying to keep her expression still, this is a gift from Hayeon no less. Her eyes stayed on the charm, she was just admiring it. By the time she looked up she noticed the vampire walking away from her with Nien.

Chaewon ran faster, Her legs didn't feel like anything– almost numb. She wanted to get home as soon as possible.
Just for Kotone to beat her there.
Kotone’s body hunched low, she was sitting on the doorstep out of breath. She always ran like she had something to prove, or she was running from Nien.
Maybe both.
Chaewon didn’t know.
By the time she reached the doorstep of her house, the older human started giggling at the younger human.
“Still slow as always, huh?” she chuckled.
Chaewon was too exhausted to respond to that. While breathing hard and dragging a hand through her pink hair, “You were just going too fast,” she muttered, but also grinning from ear to ear.
Kotone didn’t respond right away. “I got my keys,” she muttered as she opened the main door.
“Hey Chaewon?” An unknown voice came out from behind. The human’s breath caught. “Huh… what the…” The words slipped out before she could stop them.
She looked at Hayeon, but the other girl wasn’t looking back. She was fumbling around in her bag. Chaewon tried to invite her in but she stood at the door like an idiot.
“Yah Jeong Hayeon, what are you doing here?”
“Uh… I wanted to ask you something.” Hayeon’s voice wavered. “Do you want to go to a ball with me?”
The offer hadn't been processed in her mind before responding. The only ball that Chaewon knew of was supposed to be the school ball. She wasn't going to go originally but she smiled at the offer– as much she didn't want to admit it but she accepted.
Hayeon was thrilled on the inside but on the outside she grinned that stupid annoying grin she always did.
“You were my last pick, honestly…” She paused for somewhat of a dramatic effect. “I'll see you then Kim Chaewon.” Hayeon grinned, fangs now visible. The human groaned dramatically and the vampire decided then to book it out of her lawn.
“YAH! Jeong Hayeon!” she called, louder than expected. Kotone was laughing her ass off behind her. Chaewon turned to glare at her, “Unnie I hate you so much.”
“No you dont.” Kotone retorted back, “Now get inside it's getting cold.”
· · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·
A week later…
She stood outside the ballroom. About twenty students had walked right past her. She wondered again, if Hayeon was actually serious about this or not.
Kotone met Chaewon outside, giving her a side hug and immediately noticing her off putting demeanor. “Are you nervous about Hayeon? Nien said they would be here any minute.” Chaewon nodded as she took a deep sigh of relief that she wasn't getting stood up right now. “You got this. Chaewon-ah dont be too nervous and plus if she acts up I’ll be right there.” Kotone reassures her.
The younger looks at the older and smiles finally.
Hayeon emerged with Nien in hand looking more nervous than usual. The vampire was wearing a sage green tight dress with her brown hair tied up into a bun and two fly-aways that framed her face. Chaewon was wearing a shoulder light blue long dress with a white bow tied in the front. Hayeon bites her lip and mutters something into Nien’s ear.
Nien approached Kotone and they left and disappeared into the ball.
The vampire’s thoughts pounded against her head, but it was truly now or never.
“Here… Let me show you something.” Hayeon said with a small smile that seemed different this time.
Chaewon was led to the side of the event hall where there were flowers and string lights illuminating the back courtyard. There was food still lined up for when dinner started and smelled of roses and tulips because of the bushels of them all around the courtyard. The vampire stopped her walk to turn towards the human, “Do you want to dance with me?”
The human nodded and wrapped her arms around the vampire’s neck. The vampire placed her hands on her waist as they swayed to the music.
“Why did you ask me?” Chaewon asked.
“Cause despite the mutual annoyance I do love you.” Hayeon chuckled.
Hayeon pulled away and pulled out a midnight flower, it was even in her favorite color, Chaewon’s favorite.
The vampire smiled.
“Kim Chaewon, would you like to be my girlfriend?”
Chaewon covered her mouth in awe before smiling widely that her cheeks hurt.
“Of course I would, Jeong Hayeon.”
