Work Text:
power went out about an hour ago.
sprouts been in the living room the whole time. just standing there in the dark, trying to breath through it.
his rut isnt supposed to be for another two weeks. he checked. he always checks. marks it on the calender, plans around it, makes sure hes alone when it happens.
but cosmo's heat started this morning.
sprout woke up to the smell of it seeping under his door and his body just reacted before he could think. before he could remember theyre just roomates. best friends. an omega and an alpha in a small apartment with a storm outside.
now its dark. powers out. citys quiet under all the rain. and sprout is standing here digging his nails into his palms because every breath cosmo takes in the other room goes straight through him.
stop it. focus.
cosmos been in there for hours. door closed. sprout put it between them because he can control himself. hes not gonna—
a sound from the bedroom. small. desperate. cuts off quick.
sprouts hands clench.
dont. stay here.
another sound. footsteps. then the bedroom door opens.
cosmos standing there.
hes wearing just an oversized t-shirt—sprouts t-shirt, actually, the one that went missing a while back. nothing else. his skins flushed. his eyes are blown wide. hes shaking.
behind him, rain against the window.
"go back in your room." sprouts voice comess out rougher than he meant.
cosmo shakes his head. takes a step forward. "i cant be alone right now. it hurts."
sprouts nails dig in deeper. "if you come closer i wont be able to—"
"then dont." another step. cosmos voice breaks. "dont hold back. i dont want you to."
sprouts breath hitches.
rain against the windows. the apartment dark except for the grey storm light. cosmo keeps walking until theres nothing between them.
cosmos hands come up. rest on sprouts chest. his skin is burning.
"ive wanted this," cosmo whispers. "you. for months. i just didnt know how to say it."
sprouts hands finally move. land on cosmos waist. gentle.
"your sure?"
cosmo laughs a little. desperate. "if you ask me again im gonna lose my mind."
sprout pulls him closer. "cant have that happening."
and then theyre kissing.
later—hours later, storm still going—cosmos in the bedroom. blankets everywhere, still sore from last night.
cosmo wakes up and sprout isnt there.
for a second—just one—his chest goes cold. did sprout leave? did he regret it? did he—
then he smells the aroma of coffee coming from the kitchen.
sprout walks in a minute later holding two mugs. hair messy. wearing just his sweatpants from last night. stops in the doorway when he sees cosmo awake.
"hey"
"what."
sprout sits on the edge of the bed. hands him a mug. their fingers brush and neither of them say anything but neither of them pull away either.
they just sit there. drinking coffee. storm gone. sun shinning through the window.
cosmo looks at him. sprout looks back.
"so," sprout says quietly. "you gonna steal more of my t-shirts or what"
cosmo laughs. "probably."
sprout smiles. soft. "good. they smell better on you anyway."
