In Hand

Summary:

“He proposed?” Asks Sawatari Sakurako. Ichijou Kaoru looks away. “Already?”

“Is. That a problem?”

“Oh, no,” Sakurako says. “He told me. Of course he told me. It was me or Minori for the planning, right? And he figured I should know, and I figured I didn’t mind.”

Notes:

Only kinda hit your prompts. Sakurako and Ichijou I feel would have a very natural relationship after the initial “oh huh his best friend/new boyfriend” vibe.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“He proposed?” Asks Sawatari Sakurako. Ichijou Kaoru looks away. “Already?”

“Is. That a problem?”

“Oh, no,” Sakurako says. “He told me. Of course he told me. It was me or Minori for the planning, right? And he figured I should know, and I figured I didn’t mind.”

“You should,” Kaoru says. “For you, it would be legally binding.”

“Then why haven’t you proposed to me, yourself?” Sakurako asks. Kaoru pauses, then. The answer on the tip of his young is you know why, which is also why—

Because it had to be Godai Yuusuke. Because they’re both married to their jobs quite willingly - if not, perhaps, happily. Because this doesn’t change anything except a small (and they all three know it will be small, when None of them are big on spectacle) celebration and a feeling of a promise. Because their wills all say charity, family, and them them them.

“I could,” Kaoru says, instead. “It wouldn’t be legal, anyways.”

Sakurako hmms. She takes his hand and looks at the small band - Yusuke says he made it himself, and it has no stone, just gold. It’s a little rough, so Kaoru is sure he really did make it himself.

“Did you notice what he engraved on there?”

“I did.”

The fact that he still does it is charming and relieving, Kaoru thinks. The Kuuga mark, after all this time.

Godai Yusuke is still himself, in his brighter moments.

(He is always himself.)

“It’s perfect,” Sakurako says.

It is.

“Would you want to?” Ichijou asks, a few days later. “If it was the same as me?”

“I’ve never been asked to interrupt a wedding, before,” Sakurako says. “Much less the wedding between my sun and moon.”

That’s way too cheesy for her. It was someone else’s joke first, Kaoru thinks. Someone called Godai Yusuke a Sun, Ichijou Kaoru his moon. Kaoru thinks the other two laughed - Yusuke said it wasn’t that dramatic, Sakurako said it kind of was. Called them her Sun and moon as a joke until it kind of wasn’t.

Kaoru thinks that if that’s the case, Sawatari Sakurako is the earth, observing. In Godai’s orbit where Kaoru absorbed his light, waking and waning.

Sawatari Sakurako, observer. A trusted partner of the moon, too.

“It still would not be legal.”

“Mhm.”

They don’t care about that. They know that.

“I don’t think I need it,” Sakurako says. “I think the two of you would like it more. I’ll be the best man.”

“If that’s what you want.”

“I’m happy for you.”

That’s what his mother says, now. The first time it was I’m sorry, will you be alright?

He hadn’t known an answer. The loss was too raw, then - not knowing, only hoping. Imagining the best option. Thinking about when he was a child and his father didn’t come home.

He does know that was the first time he met Sakurako, after. They didn’t talk much. They had coffee, and she told some story of Godai Yusuke in college. Getting into harmless trouble.

That’s the day I knew I fell in love with him. And the day I decided I wanted to be his friend.

She said if so simply, but it wasn’t.

“It isn’t legal,” Kaoru says. “I never planned to get married at all.”

Didn’t think he could fall in love, before Yusuke.

“I know,” his mother says. “I would support you, either way.”

He knows.

“Thank god he’s doing all the work,” Sakurako says.

He isn’t. He’s having fun. Everyone helps. Kaoru knows what she means. He fills his schedule and she fills hers, and Godai Yusuke slots himself in when he wants to, when he needs to.

They will always come for him and wait for him.

Ichijou nods anyways.

“You talking about me?” Yusuke asks. “You two can go, you know. Don’t you have work?”

“I’ve been informed I should take some time to plan my own wedding,” Kaoru says.

Sakurako nods.

“They said it’s my duty as best man,” she says. “Wasn’t the plan simple?”

“Friends and family,” Kaoru says. Yusuke smiles. Sakurako sighs and leans against Kaoru’s shoulder.

“Mhm,” she says. “Exactly.”

Godai Yusuke is here. He looks too good in a suit and tie, probably because Kaoru never sees him in one. He feels that familiar out of character urge to get up and kiss him.

Yusuke does a spin.

“What do you think?” He asks.

“Your tie is crooked,” Kaoru says. “Come here.”

Yusuke laughs and comes closer to be fixed up.

“I’m glad I met you,” Kaoru says.

He has something longer planned for the altar. No one would fault him for not. Yusuke grins.

“Me too,” he says.
