We'll never change

Summary:

For Donghyuck flowers have always been the most fascinating thing in his life. The language they carry with many different other things has always drawn his attention towards them.

Would there be a person for him that has the same power that flowers do? Someone that could be the light, who would never leave his side.

Chapter Text

Once again time to open the shop, Donghyuck thought to himself while dragging a sign about the season's specialty flowers outside the shop’s door.

“Renjun, I could use a bit of help here!” Donghyuck shouted from the door. One of the legs of the rusty sign got somehow stuck in the doorway.

“Yeah wait a second!” Renjun answered him from the inside of their little shop. “How did you even manage to get it stuck like this??”

“HOW WOULD I KNOW?!” Donghyuck screeched and furrowed his brows. “I was just trying to get it outside and one of those fucking corners got stuck somehow!”

“Yeah yeah let’s just lift it a bit” Renjun grinned like he had just won in life. He had gotten exactly the reaction he wanted out of him.

Donghyuck was really proud of how far they had come. Thinking that this whole thing started from an idea from his backyard, this was huge. Having their own shop for people to come and buy flowers for different events was like a dream come true.

The whole town knew their small and cozy flower store. Many really nice older ladies came to buy flowers for their children and grandchildren often and most of the time stayed for a little chat. Donghyuck was really happy with how his life was going. He was happy because their space was nicely decorated and with the flowers and all kinds of plants completing the whole look of the space.

Usually the mornings were slow starts for the day. During the morning a couple came by asking for flower arrangements for their upcoming wedding. Renjun handled the wedding setups and Donghyuck checked how the flowers were doing outside the shop and near the entrance.

“Oh I’m so glad we get requests to do flower arrangements for weddings.” Renjun smiled while he watered some of the plants and flowers in the hanging planters by the windows. “I really like to do bouquets with a color theme.”

“I’m excited for the upcoming community event that we got a job for too.”

“Oh I forgot about that. When was it again?”

“10th of July. About a week from now.” Donghyuck checked his calendar. “We need to do flower arrangements for the mayor and some of the stands that will be outside of the community centre.”

“Did we have a theme for that?” Renjun asked seemingly interested about this too.

“I think they asked for colorful, summery vibes or something like that.” He tried to remember what they had been told. “Anyway we should start planning for them soon. Is tomorrow okay?” Renjun flashed him a quick thumbs up before disappearing to help another customer.

Donghyuck always found the closing time of the shop the most exhausting. Maybe part of it was the long day consisting of taking care of plants and helping customers, but he thought that checking that all the flowers had had water during the day if they needed it and on top of that figuring out what they had to do on the next day to keep up with their schedule.

Donghyuck collapsed onto his bed and exhaled loudly. He didn’t feel his legs quite well from all the standing and running around at work. He couldn't remember a single time he sat down since morning. He knew that tomorrow would be an even busier day because of their to-do list at the shop. It wasn’t long until the event they had to make the flower arrangements for so they needed to get started before it was too late for that. Donghyuck wasn’t complaining about the task, but after a long week it felt chaotic to start a new project with a schedule. Just so he couldn't overthink his starting week tomorrow he decided that he should just go to sleep so he could get up early tomorrow morning.

A couple days later Donghyuck and Renjun were already making great progress with the flowers. They had their plans ready and had been to the event site so they could see where the flowers were going to be as well as what the event was going to be like.

“It’s really been busy these last few days,” Renjun sighed.

“Yeah, I think so too I’ve been exhausted,” Donghyuck leaned against the counter. “At least after the event we’ll have a couple of those more quiet days so we can rest a bit.”

“I would hope so”

“By the way about the bouquets” Donghyuck started turning his head towards the already started flower arrangements. “I think we should add a couple of delphiniums to that one and lilies to them all.”

“Why? I mean yeah let’s add them but why all of a sudden?”

“Well, delphiniums are July's birth flowers so I’d say it would be a great fit and lilies symbolize purity, virtue and devotion. That’s pretty summery in my opinion.”

“You really are passionate about this whole flower language thing..” Renjun stared at him stunned.

“OH OH AND SOME PEONIES” Donghyuck stood up suddenly, startling Renjun. “They carry the message of good fortune.”

They had managed to make everything according to their plans and the schedule they had been set. The community event was going to be held tomorrow at the community center in town. They needed to be there early with the flowers so they made sure before closing that everything was set and ready.

Donghyuck was folding up the sign outside and looked up into the sky to see the beautiful sunset in front of him. At moments like this he always thought about how lucky he was that this was his life. He was aware that for Renjun, he probably seemed like the most embarrassingly sentimental guy he had ever met and he made fun of his random deep conversations sometimes when he brought up a really specific topic when everything else was quiet. Donghyuck knew that most of the people were too busy to even think about these little things in life to be grateful about and it was fortunate for him to have this kind of time to just stop and be thankful.

He dragged the sign inside the shop and checked on the flowers for the last time before leaving them for the night. Tomorrow was going to be a big day for them both and they were prepared for it. This was one of the things they were looking forward to the whole time since they got asked to do this by the mayor.

The last thing Donghyuck thought about before going to sleep was about the amazing pictures he was going to take at the event tomorrow. He wanted to capture the beauty of the flowers in the morning’s sunlight. On top of that he knew that if the photos turned out good they could use them for the shop’s advertisement later on. With that, Donghyuck fell asleep.. On the couch…
