Chapter 1: Izuku Midoriya Quirk Origins

Chapter Text

"Not all men are created equal," a voice echoed out as a tall and buff young man with green hair ran down the street in his school uniform with his backpack bouncing on its loose straps. "I learned that at the age of four."

"Wow, Kacchan, your quirk is so cool!" cried out a young Izuku Midoriya as his best friend, Katsuki Bakugo AKA Kacchan, showed off the small sparks he could make with his explosive sweat.

"I know Zuku," Katsuki responded, using his own cute little nickname for his best friend. "I bet your quirk will be almost as cool when it comes in, too."

Katsuki's quirk had just come in the day before. He was showing it off to the class at school today. Izuku's quirk should be coming in any day now as well. In fact, he had a doctor's appointment for that same afternoon to test some things and see if they could get an idea of what his quirk would be. However, just as Izuku was going to say something else, his vision started to burn slightly. He rubbed his eyes, and when he looked back at Katsuki, he could see some sort of color running along his entire body, faint orange lines with a bright red focused on his hands. Continuing to look at the colors while the other kids were praising Katsuki for having an amazing quirk, Izuku thought about how cool the colors would look if his feet had the same deep red as his hands.

Suddenly, the red flowed through Katsuki's body, spreading to his feet just like Izuku had thought of, and Katsuki's shoes exploded from his feet as a blast came from them, just like from his hands, startling the entire class before they started cheering for Katsuki even harder.

"Kacchan, I think I activated my quirk!" Izuku shouted as he looked at some of the other kids who also had colors flowing through them. One whose quirk let him extend his fingers had a neon yellow glow along them, and another who could stretch his eyeballs out from his head had a very similar yellow glow from behind his eyes. There was even one kid whose quirk hadn't come in yet that had a strange, dull grey glow from his back that looked like a pair of wings not fully grown.

"What do you mean, Zuku?" Katsuki asked as he turned to his best friend, "What happened?"

"I could see your quirk!" Izuku responded excitedly, "It's like a burning orange color all over your body, like your sweat, but then it's a bright red on your hands, where you can set off the explosions, but then just before your shoes blew up, I saw the red flow through your body down to your feet."

"Holy shit, Zuku, that's awesome!" Katsuki swore even at four years old because his mother had a foul mouth of her own.

Later, we see Izuku and his mother, Inko Midoriya, in a doctor's office. "You said the testing had identified his quirk doctor?" asked Inko as she used her own ability, Attraction Of Small Objects, to pick up the All Might action figure Izuku had dropped from excitement.

"Well, Mrs. Midoriya, it appears your son can see others' quirks," said the doctor, looking over the testing files. "He was even able to identify one of our interns' healing quirk as healing saliva without anyone telling him; it's very impressive."

"Does that mean I can be a hero?!" Izuku asked loudly before his mother could even respond, excited at the prospect, while noticing his mother's quirk was mostly a dim green glow in her head with a small amount spread to her hands.

"Unfortunately, while your quirk would be amazing as a doctor or quirk counselor," the doctor began, while Izuku was focused on his mother's quirk and wishing it were a brighter glow, maybe entirely in her head instead of her hands. "It would be completely useless as a hero sorry kid you might as well give up, it's not going to happen," in his sadness hearing the doctors casually cruel words, Izuku didn't notice as the dull green in his mother's mind grew to a bright green glow, however instead of flowing from her hands to her head the glow actually spread throughout her entire body.

"How dare you!" Inko was very angry at the doctor's attitude towards her son, so angry her eyes started to glow green, and her hair floated around her head while some of the loose objects around the office began to lift off the desk and point threateningly at the doctor. "Come on, Izuku, we're leaving," she growled before grabbing her son's hand and marching out the door, which slammed behind her as all the floating objects in the room fell loudly back to their resting places and the doctor wiped sweat from his brow.

When they got home, Inko let Izuku watch his favorite video, All Might's debut, where he saved a hundred people from a bus crash in less than ten minutes, and went to make his favorite food for dinner. When she returned to the room, Izuku was watching the video and crying lightly, so she quickly pulled him into a hug.

"Mommy," Izuku started, still crying, "can I still be a hero like All Might?"

Inko looked at her son. In another life, maybe she would have been crying too, but here and now, she looked at her beloved son and made up her mind. "Of course, son, if you put your mind to it, you can do anything you want, I promise you that."

Izuku smiled widely as his tears slowly dried up and he wrapped his mother in a hug as All Might's famous laugh echoed from the computer in the background. "My name is Izuku Midoriya, and this is the story of how I helped make the greatest generation of heroes ever seen."
