"Ran!"
Ran freezes as he screams her name, jumping in front of her protectively with his arms outspread. "W-what—"
Bang.
Oh god no, please no, Ran stands still, mortified as the man before her crumples onto the ground. It's not real, this isn't real! The criminal turns and runs off, and the police chase after him, but Ran doesn't even notice as she collapses to the floor.
"No, no, no!"
Ran howls in anguish as she cradles his head in her arms, tears spilling from her eyes, blurring her vision as she tries desperately to avoid looking at the masses of blood spilling from his chest. She glances around hopelessly, wide eyes fixing on Heiji, pleading for him to tell her that the man she held within her grasp was going to survive.
The Osakan silently grits his teeth, shaking slightly as he averts his gaze, kneeling beside Ran. "Ya can't go, Kudo," he chokes out, "jus' wait, the ambulance is—"
Shinichi weakly opens one eye, silencing Heiji. Heaving, he attempts to move, but quickly falls back into Ran's arms. He coughs violently, blood dripping from his mouth as he wheezes, resigned to his fate.
"Ran," he murmurs, once-bright blue eyes relaxing as they gazed up at her.
"No, Shinichi," she sobs, "don't speak, you'll be fine, you're going to live," Ran's voice is hardly a whisper at this point, but he gives her a small smile.
"I'm..." Shinichi breaks off, coughing. "I'm sorry, Ran..." He reaches out, his fingers stroking the ring on her finger with his left hand. Shinichi gazes at the two bands for a moment before looking back at his wife.
He saved her. Nothing else mattered.
"Don't you dare!" Ran shrieks, her grip on him unconsciously tightening. "Don't leave me! Not again!" Tears fall, dripping onto Shinichi's paled face.
"Idiot... I'll always be with you..." Shinichi gasps for breath, shaking from the effort. He reaches up, gently wiping her tears from her eye.
"P-please! I can't— I can't go on without you, please, no," her voice cracks as she talks, hanging her head as she holds him closer. She knows. She knows it's hopeless. He's lost far too much blood.
Shinichi caresses her cheek gently, tilting her face to look at him. "I love you, Ran," he whispers, letting his arm fall and finally shutting his tired eyes.
Her husband goes limp within her arms.
Her vision is a blur, blue splattered with red. Blood. His blood covers her clothes, her hands, the ground. She feels like she's going to be sick, but she can't look away. He's dead. Shinichi's dead. She shakes violently, pulling him up further and hugging him for what would be the last time.
Pulling back, she lets out a long, pained scream.
At some point, Kazuha has pulled her into a hug, although she's not sure how long it has been. "Kazuha-chan," Ran sobs, burying her face into her friend's shoulder. "I-I didn't, I couldn't,"
"It's okay, Ran, we're here," Kazuha's voice is shakey, and Ran can tell from her tone that the woman has been crying as well. Heiji rests an arm on Ran's back, his eyes still firmly fixed to the ground and his lips pulled tight as he silently grieves.
"H-he didn't know," Ran hiccups, "I couldn't tell him...."
"What?" Kazuha draws back and looks into Ran's eyes.
"I-I'm pregnant."
