Attack Dog

Summary:

Krul Tepes was a light sleeper.

Notes:

Work Text:

Krul Tepes was a light sleeper. No matter how soft the sheets, no matter the company she kept, no one in her high standing would have been able to rest soundly. Just one of the tradeoffs for having power, she thought wryly. There weren't many, but they were there, lurking often just out of mind. Immortal queen or no, there could always be someone among her people plotting something untoward. That was one of the very few things that both vampires and the humans shared- a lust for power.

It wasn’t as if she needed sleep, of course. She wouldn’t die without it, however she couldn’t perform at her full potential either.

It was different for him, she thought, looking over to the figure nestled beside her.

She had forgotten, once, to allow her pet time for rest in between meetings and training and lessons. He had toppled over like a drained corpse.

If only he would allow himself to be fully turned, he wouldn’t have fall prey to these human weaknesses.

She tsked, reaching over to gently smooth a lock of pale hair away from the boy’s face. However, his brow creased at the touch, his lips twitching downward as he slept. Still, Krul continued the motion, though perhaps slightly rougher than before, without quite knowing why. Confusion over her own actions was something fairly new to her, hardly something she wished to dwell on.

A nightmare. Something as human as sleep. Krul thought that perhaps she may have had them too long, long ago, or perhaps she had only read of it in a book during a fit of frivolity.

He had all needs met here, under her care and tutelage. Sustenance, shelter, protection against fellow vampires and men alike. For what should Mikaela ever fear?

“Yes, that is true, Crowley, however-“ Krul argued with the man seated across the conference table from her, as Mika tuned in and out. He knew very well that he was only brought to these meetings as a little more than a piece of jewelry for his queen. Only when the rare mood struck her, did Krul explain to him afterward what the more obscure proceedings had been about.

Mika fought the urge to doze. The nightmares tended to come and go, but for the past week, however, they had repeated each night, like bad reruns on television- back when there had been TV- the Hyakuya children drained and torn to pieces, Yuu lying lifeless, the humans having poked and prodded him to no more than a husk…and Krul. He had dreamt of her the previous night- he had grabbed her, holding her down and looking into her ruby eyes, like hot coals, before he drank her dry. She was gone after that- like the orphans, like Yuu.

The rustle of a cloak, the singing of a blade unsheathed- Mika was snapped back into reality by the swift movement rushing toward Krul.

Mika’s body moved on its own, before he knew it, he had the assassin pinned on the table. He stole a glance at Krul as a pair of guards marched in, dragging the disgruntled noble away to certain death.

The vampire queen’s eyes were wide.

Mika, her pet, a vampire not yet fully awakened, had somehow managed to summon strength and speed greater than that of noble. How could that be, Krul wondered, as they settled into bed.

Krul awoke a time later, panting, in a cold sweat, visions of Mika drained and torn to shreds at the hands of nobles and humans alike, fading on the backs of her eyelids.

Ah, she thought, a nightmare.
