CHAPTER ONE

The Battle of Yavin was over. Against all odds, the Rebel Alliance had struck a killing blow, shattering the Empire's most terrifying weapon: the Death Star. In a single night, the galaxy had watched the impossible happen, and the name on everyone's lips was Luke Skywalker.

Several days had passed since that final, desperate trench run. Inside the ancient temples of Yavin 4, the celebratory cheers had been replaced by the frantic hum a planned evacuation. Luke stepped out of the command centre, his mind still heavy from the briefing he'd just left.

The Rebel commanders were on edge. They had won the battle, but they hadn't won the war. The Empire was wounded and would be looking for blood, and the Alliance was running out of time to disappear into the stars before the Imperial fleet arrived for its revenge. Luke took a deep breath of the humid jungle air, feeling the weight of his new life. He wasn't just a farm boy from Tatooine anymore; he was the pilot who had changed everything.

Luke had a mission. He moved with a new sense of urgency, weaving through the crowded stone corridors of the base toward the main hangar. The massive cavern was a symphony of chaos: the whine of power tools, the shouts of deck officers, and the heavy scent of spent fuel.

One sound, however, cut through the noise—the frustrated, growling howl of a Wookiee. Luke looked toward the Millennium Falcon and saw Chewbacca hunched over a sparking floor panel, while Han Solo stood over him, gesturing wildly with a hydro-spanner.

"Hey Han, go easy on him!" Luke called out, a small smirk breaking through his focus.

Han turned, looking every bit the scruffy smuggler and space pirate. He pushed a protective visor up onto his forehead, his face smeared with grease and his flight vest hanging open. He held a flickering blow torch in one hand like a smoking gun.

"Hey, kid," Han replied, wiping a bead of sweat from his brow. He leaned against a landing strut, trying to look casual despite the mechanical nightmare behind him. "Word is you're heading out. Some top-secret mission for the powers that be, huh?"

Luke nodded, clutching a flight data-cylinder tightly under his arm. "We have to find a new safe haven," he said, his voice dropping as he glanced around at the busy technicians. "The Empire won't let this base stand for much longer." He looked at Han, his expression shifting from the mission to something more personal. "...So, you're finally doing it? You're leaving us?"

Han sighed, pulling the visor completely off his head and tossing it onto a tool crate. The bravado in his eyes softened just for a second. "That's right, kid. I've got a price on my head that hasn't gone away just because you blew up a space station. Jabba is still waiting for his money... I might be long gone by the time you get back."

Luke felt a knot tighten in his throat. He swallowed hard, realizing how much he had come to rely on the older smuggler's cynical confidence. "So long, Han," he said, offering a small, sincere nod. "Best of luck. I mean it."

He looked up at the towering Wookiee, who was watching the exchange with a low, mournful rumble in his chest. "And you, Chewie... you two stay out of trouble."

Chewbacca raised a massive, furred hand in a silent salute, his eyes kind. Luke didn't linger; he turned and hurried further into the hangar toward his waiting X-wing, leaving the grease and the grit of the Falcon behind him.

The hum of the hangar grew louder as Luke approached the short range-fighter bays. There, standing out among the row of scuffed Y wings, was his X-wing. Its hull was scorched from the Death Star's surface, but to Luke, it looked like the most beautiful thing in the galaxy.

High up in the droid socket, a familiar dome spun around. R2-D2 let out a frantic series of beeps and whistles, rocking back and forth in his seat.

"I'm coming, Artoo!" Luke called out, his voice echoing against the damp stone rafters.

He was interrupted by the heavy rhythmic clatter of boots on the hangar floor. General Dodonna approached, flanked by a small cluster of Rebel tacticians carrying flickering datapad clipboards.

"We've got the coordinates locked into your onboard-computer, Luke," Dodonna said, his voice gravelly and tired. "The long-range scanners will track your ion trail as far as the outer rim, but once you jump, it's all encrypted"

Luke climbed the first rung of the cockpit ladder, looking back with a small, determined smirk. "You need a scout who can outrun an Imperial patrol if things get hairy, General. I'm your man."

"Even so... keep your shields up and your eyes open," Dodonna warned. He noticed Princess Leia standing a few paces back, her white robes a sharp contrast to the grey stone. With a respectful nod, the General stepped away, giving them a moment of privacy.

Leia stepped forward. Her hair was coiled in those iconic side-buns, and despite the exhaustion of the planned evacuation, she carried herself with a regal strength. "Are you sure you're ready for this, Luke?" she asked softly, her eyes searching his.

Luke leaned against the side of the X-wing, his shoulders dropping as he glanced back toward the Falcon's docking bay. "It's Han... I really thought he'd stay. After everything we went through out there..."

Leia followed his gaze, her expression hardening just slightly. "Captain Solo has his own path, Luke. He's a smuggler, and that crime lord he works for isn't known for being patient" She stepped closer, the scent of the jungle air swirling between them, and leaned in to press a brief, warm kiss against his cheek. "Be safe. I'll be monitoring the scanners until you're back."

C-3PO shuffled over, his golden plating reflecting the hangar's harsh work lights. He tilted his head back, gazing up at the R2 unit tucked behind the cockpit. "Oh, Artoo, you will be careful, won't you? This isn't a simple maintenance run!"

The little droid let out a series of defiant, warbling beeps, spinning his dome toward the stars.

Luke climbed the final rungs of the ladder and swung himself into the pilot's seat. He looked down at the golden droid with a confident grin. "Relax, Threepio. It's just a survey mission. It's no sweat!"

He pulled the canopy down, and the chaotic noise of the hangar was instantly replaced by the steady, pressurized hum of the life-support systems. Luke began flipping switches, the cockpit lighting up in a sea of red and green displays. With a sharp whine of power, the X-wing lifted off the hangar floor.

He eased the stick back, and the ship shot forward, screaming out of the ancient temple mouth. The humid green jungle below blurred into a streak of emerald as he climbed higher, piercing the thick, red-tinted clouds of Yavin 4.

The commlink crackled to life in his ear. "Red Leader, this is Command Centre," General Dodonna's voice came through, filtered by static. "Remember, Luke... we are here for you if you encounter trouble. Don't hesitate to signal."

Luke gripped the controls, feeling the raw power of the fighter as the sky began to darken into the deep black of space. "Good to hear, General... but don't worry. I'm prepared for anything."

He sounded sure of himself, but as he looked out into the vast, silent vacuum of the stars, a small flicker of doubt crossed his mind. He just hoped he wouldn't pay dearly for his over confidence. With a firm push of the levers, the stars began to stretch into long, white streaks, and the X-wing vanished into the jump to lightspeed.
