A Teenage Boy’s Best Friend (is Different Than Man’s)

Summary:

A little ficlet featuring Drew’s cat, Angus.
Meant to be a sequel to my previous work, “A Bleeding Boy” but you don’t need to read it to understand this one.

Notes:

I imagine Drew as THE loving cat dad

Work Text:

In the house, all was quiet. The pet cat lazily got up and moved to a more comfortable position in his bed. The youngest of his humans left hours ago. The gnawing pain of hunger had grown in the cat’s stomach since then. He wondered why the boy hadn’t refilled his bowl yet. Where was he?
Angus decided to investigate his room, in case he was hiding in there. Luckily, the child almost never closed his door if he wasn’t in his room. Using his muzzle, he pried the door open and squeezed through the gap.
The room was dark. The blinds were down, the lights were off. He probably wasn’t there, but it didn’t hurt to check, did it?
The room was relatively easy to traverse for the middle-aged cat. He wasn’t particularly graceful in his movements, but he made his way through the random things that his owner left on the floor. Paper with lines and shapes, boxes, and a sweatshirt. The sweatshirt smelled off. He could sense the boy’s scent on it, but below it, more strongly, there was another human’s smell on it. It seemed somewhat familiar, but Angus couldn’t place it. Maybe it was one of the loud, other boys who stayed here sometimes.
He moved on quickly. After all, he had a goal. He jumped on the bed. The covers weren’t pulled down, but still clearly disturbed. When the boy came home late, he just flopped on top of the bed and went to sleep. It was less comfy and warm for Angus, but it made it was easier to get close without having to wriggle underneath the tightly drawn sheets.
He then checked the rest of the room. The closet seemed awfully suspicious, but he couldn’t get it open. A good piece of time was spent sniffing and pawing under the door, trying to sense the boy. Eventually deciding that he wasn’t in there, Angus left the room.
He was about to go lounge in a particularly enticing sun ray cast by the afternoon sun, but before he made his way over, he heard a sound that was music to his ears. The beautiful sound of a slamming front door and heavy footsteps down the hall.
Angus ran to greet him. He meowed loudly to get the attention of the brown haired boy.
“Oh. Hey Angus. What’s up buddy?” He scooped him up and cradled him in his arms, planting a gentle kiss on the top of his head. Sometimes Angus wondered if the human thought he was his mom. The other two living in this house weren’t hostile to him, but didn’t lavish him with nearly as much love as this guy. He meowed more insistently.
“You hungry?” He walked over to the food and water bowls. “Oh. You’re out of food. I’ll get you some more right now, okay?” Angus waited impatiently for his return.
As the boy opened and emptied the contents of the can into the bowl, he talked to his cat. “Today, I had a mini crisis at Rodrick’s,” the smell of meat made Angus salivate as the boy slightly wrinkled his nose. “But it was cool. I talked to him about it and I’m better now.” He got up and placed the can in the sink.
He returned and sat next to the feasting little beast. He gently pet him as he ate, humming a song to himself.
“You know, Angus,” he said softly, more to himself than his cat. “If we’re really lucky, you might end up with another dad.”
The cat just looked at him and gave a small meow.
“Angus, you are the cutest cat I have ever seen, and I truly mean that.”
