It’s a little after four a.m. when the phone rings, jolting Robby from sleep. He groggily reaches for his cellphone, answering it with his eyes still closed. “What?” he mumbles, his voice rough with sleep. Normally, he wouldn’t answer his phone so abruptly, but he recognized the ringtone; Abbot.
He hears some ruffling, then a door shutting. “I think if you are able, you should come in,” Jack’s voice comes through the line. “It’s been a rough night, very rough.”
“Okay,” Robby replies, a little confused.
Jack continues, “Two sexual assault cases today, with Sophie as our only SANE nurse. She’s been a little more jumpy since the second case; she’s on the roof. Said she needed some air, asked Beth to keep covering.”
“It’s February,” Robby points out.
“I know,” Jack says quietly. “Why do you think I’m calling you?”
“Be there soon,” Robby answers before hanging up.
It’s not long after Robby hangs up that he’s heading through the rooftop door, the cool night air biting at his skin. He spots Sophie leaning against the bar, which is just a few inches from the edge, her posture tense and unprotected; no jacket to shield her from the cold.
Robby frowns slightly, instinctively slipping off his own jacket and gently draping it over her shoulders. Sophie looks up at him, a soft, shaky smile on her face, tears glistening in her eyes. “Did Jack call you?” she asks quietly.
Robby nods in response. “Yeah,” he says softly.
“Do you want to talk about it?” he asks gently. She shakes her head, clearly not ready; not here, not now. Sophie would tell him in her own time. “I’m sorry, I don’t know how to help,” he whispers, knowing she hears him. She doesn’t need to say anything; Robby understands that. He steps closer, just a few inches beside her. “I’m here if you need anything.”
“Just you right now,” Sophie replies softly. “Thank you for coming.”
