Something Blue

Summary:

Two years after Yejun and Noah met and one year after they moved in together, Noah finds a bucket list that he wrote when he was a teenager. There are some items from that list that Yejun thinks they could check off together.

Notes:

This is a direct sequel to my fwb yenoye fic I didn’t know I was lonely ‘til I saw your face. You can still read this on its own but their relationship development and how they get together is in that first fic :)

Eunho and Bamby are an established couple in this universe too

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Relationships are supposed to be this easy, aren’t they?

This is a thought that Yejun has often had in the year and a half that he’s been dating Noah. Now, easy does not mean that there aren’t any disagreements or arguments. Of course, he hates when they happen but one day, he realised he was certain that they would get through them.

Yejun was once a man of many certainties.

This was back when he was on the streamlined path as a Seoulite working at a prestigious veterinary clinic - a path that involved a long term girlfriend, marriage plans, having kids, saving up to open his own clinic in the city and going back to teach at his former university. It was before the catastrophic events two years ago when he was dumped and fired within the same week, before he moved to the small seaside town of Haewol-ri on a whim to become the local vet there and it was definitely before he had an encounter and misunderstanding with the beautiful local man who renovated his clinic, became friends (and friends with benefits) with said man, realised he was bisexual and fell in love.

If the events of the last two years have taught him anything, it’s that certainty is overrated but if he is certain about one thing, it's that he believes that everything in his life has brought him here to be with Han Noah in Haewol-ri.

Relationships are supposed to be this easy because what else could explain how Yejun (a person who labels the date on every tupperware container of leftovers he puts in the fridge) is tolerating Noah’s spring cleaning method?

After weeks of gentle prodding, Noah agreed to a deep spring clean of his house that they have made into their home and they’ve cleared the whole weekend for it. On a breezy early spring Saturday morning they begin and two hours have passed since Noah secluded himself in their bedroom, cleaning out his heirloom lacquered chest of drawers. These drawers have been with Noah since he was young and they were full well before Yejun moved in a year ago, only half a year after they officially started dating. Yejun had an inkling that this might be the most difficult part of the whole weekend and offered to help but it was something that Noah insisted on tackling by himself.

In the meantime, Yejun has cleaned out their mail drawer, tidied up their pantry, thrown away old take-out menus and bills stuck to the fridge and even organised their freezer full of chicken breast bought on sale. He is sitting on the floor in the living room, wiping down their coffee table when their bedroom door swings open and Noah appears in the doorway wearing a Santa hat, a gaudy granny square cardigan and a pair of bright red-rimmed sunglasses. In his hands is a mysterious laminated piece of paper that he is waving around and showing off.

Yejun is not only tolerating Noah's unorthodox cleaning methods – unfortunately, he might even find them endearing.

“Oh my god, look what I just found,” Noah says with an uninhibited smile. Although his eyes are hidden behind the sunglass lenses, Yejun knows they must be wide and wild with excitement.

“What’s that?” Yejun leans forward and squints at the sheet of paper. “Is it a certificate or something?”

Noah shuffles through the room, plops down on the floor next to Yejun and places the laminated A4 sheet of paper on the coffee table in front of them. The title, written in cursive and decorated with yellow highlighter, reads “Noah’s Bucket List” and below that is a list of 50 numbered items that extend onto the backside of the sheet.

Noah has kept his smile on this whole time, clearly amused at his past self. “I wrote this in my first year of high school after I discovered the concept of a bucket list,” he says.

Yejun shifts closer and asks, “Can I read it?”

At this, Noah snatches the paper back and turns away. “Wait, let me check if I wrote anything embarrassing first.”

Yejun sighs before reassuringly saying, “Babe, I’m not going to judge 16 year old Noah for what he wrote.”

After a second's consideration, Noah turns around again and places the page back on the coffee table. He clears his throat and reads, “One: Get into a uni in Seoul. Check.”

Naturally, Yejun continues, “Two: Go to a concert.”

“I’ve already done that too. Three: be on TV. Now, as far as I know I have not been on TV so let’s brainstorm how to make this happen later.”

Yejun chuckles. He will never not find Noah amusing. “Four: Travel overseas. You’ve done that plenty of times.”

Their fridge is covered in magnets from places that Noah has travelled to – from his university exchange program in China to a two month backpacking trip throughout Europe when he was in his mid-twenties. Just a few months ago, the two of them went on a short trip to Singapore.

“Five: Buy Grandma expensive jewelry. Hmm, I don’t know if I have ever bought her expensive jewelry before.”

“That’s such a cute one–” Yejun punctuates this with a squeeze of the other man’s thigh under the coffee table, “– and easily achievable too.”

As they read on, there are many typical bucket list items, many silly bucket list items and many items related to Noah’s grandma. Yejun is not surprised by this, given that she raised Noah after his parents passed away, but as he imagines a teenage Han Noah carefully composing this list 14 years ago in his childhood bedroom, his love for him impossibly grows.

“Hey,” he says with affection dripping from his voice, smile and eyes, “why don’t we try to check off the things you want to do for your grandma?”

“Hmm?”

“She’s getting older now and I think she deserves all these things.”

Noah takes off his santa hat and sunglasses and turns to face Yejun which prompts him to do the same. He crinkles his nose and pouts, eyes starting to glisten. “I really got lucky, didn't I? The whole friends with benefits to boyfriends thing rarely ever works out this well.”

*

With no time wasted, they undertake the three hour drive to Seoul to visit some jewelry stores the next day.

Noah is a filial grandson (and Yejun is basically also an adopted grandson at this point) which means it is never a shock when they visit his grandma's house. She would not suspect a thing if they appeared at her door step with gift bags in hand.

“Halmoni!” Noah calls from the front yard.

“Coming!” his grandma replies from inside the hanok home.

After a few moments, she opens the door and as always, her warm smile tells them to enter.  As soon as they cross the threshold, she is patting arms, cupping cheeks and giving hugs – to both of them. She then takes a step back and notices the bags in their hands, dangling by their sides.

“Now, what’s this about?”

*

At the dining table, Yejun sits beside Noah with his grandma sitting in front of them.

“– and this one is from that bakery you saw on TV the other day,” Noah says as he slides a cardboard box of cream filled biscuits across the table. They have been laying out their gifts one by one and this is the third gift. “I got you the red bean flavour. Red beans are your favourite, right?”

The final and smallest, but most precious, gift comes in the form of two jewelry boxes made of plush purple velvet material.

When they give Noah's grandma these two jewellery boxes, she cannot help but gasp. She opens the boxes to find inside a gold necklace with a jade pendant and a matching pair of jade earrings. She holds up the necklace and the way that the pendant dangles catches the sunlight through the window and sparkles. With utmost care, she places it back in the box.

Taking a handkerchief from her pocket, Noah’s grandma dabs at the corners of her eyes and says, “I find myself becoming even more emotional as I get older.”

Noah runs around to the other side of the table to wrap an arm around her shoulders. “Nonsense, you’re still a young lady.”

“I'm old but I’m not delusional yet, you punk.”

Yejun has been smiling this whole time but as he watches this interaction, he starts openly laughing, bringing a palm up to cover his mouth.

“By the way, Noah,” his grandma says as she shoos him off her shoulder, “the bathroom light is flickering again. Can you take a look at it?”

“Right now?”

“Yes, right now.”

“Okay, okay, I’m on it, miss.”

When Noah has left the room, his grandma leans across the table and whispers, “Yejun-ah, come to my room for a second? There’s something I want to give you.”

5) Buy Grandma expensive jewellery ✓

*

There is a soft ballad playing through the speakers at their home one night as Yejun and Noah lounge on the couch, seated at opposite ends with their legs tangled together in the middle. Yejun is reading a book while Noah is on his phone, browsing beautiful houses on Airbnb.

“So I’ve been thinking,” Noah says, breaking the comfortable silence, “my grandma doesn't have a passport right now and I don't think she'd want to get a new one.”

“Hmmm?”

“We could take her to Jeju island, though.”

“For that flight bucket list item?” Yejun asks as he finishes the paragraph he's on.

“Yeah!”

Yejun puts his book down and after a beat, he grins and says, “You're a genius, you know?”

“I do know that.”

They surprise her again with three last minute plane tickets and a four day itinerary on Jeju Island. Both being their own bosses, Yejun and Noah are flexible with their schedules and decide to focus on checking off the list items related to Noah's grandma for the time being.

Although their town of Haewol-ri is also by the sea and is beautiful in its own right, on every drive on Jeju Island their eyes are blessed with with forests, waterfalls, rolling hills and volcanic mountains. Maybe it’s the pleasant spring weather or maybe it’s the fact that Yejun is here with Noah and arguably the most important person to him (Yejun can concede to this) but it couldn't be a more idyllic trip.

At Seongsan Ilchulbong, after coming down from a strenuous but worthwhile hike up to the volcanic crater peak, they spot Noah's Grandma on the beach making friends with the local haenyeo, ladies her age who have just come up from diving for seafood. Noah watches with the most fond smile on his face and this puts the same smile on Yejun's face.

17) Take grandma somewhere on a plane ✓

*

Yejun's laptop is open on the kitchen table, next to all of the recipe books that they have lying around the house.

“Noah, my love. May I ask - why a five course meal?” Yejun scrolls up and down on a website detailing a Beef Wellington recipe. “What did 16 year old Noah even know about fine dining?”

“Nothing, probably. I think I had just watched the drama Pasta. Do you remember it? It was so popular at the time.” After a nod from Yejun, Noah continues, “Anyway, I loved that drama and went through a cooking show phase back then.”

“All of that just to end up eating chicken breast most of the time,” Yejun can't help but lovingly quip.

“I would argue that my years of cooking knowledge through osmosis is how I'm able to have decent meals with mainly chicken breast.”

“Okay, this pastry dough is really testing me. We could do a three course meal instead right? She wouldn’t know it was supposed to be five courses.”

When they invited Noah’s grandma over for a fancy dinner and instructed her to wear her finest dress, she did not bother to ask why. She had long caught on that there was a list or something in that vein that they were making their way through and was enjoying all the indulgent surprises.

Noah stops stirring his pot of cream and in a deathly serious tone, he replies, “Jun-ah, I’d be okay with that but it would eat at you for the rest of your life, wouldn't it?”

“Probably…”

“Even though it’s my list.”

“Yeah…”

“So, we'll do this properly.”

“Fine…”

“This feels a little bittersweet though,” Noah says as he puts the panna cotta that he was preparing in the fridge to set.

“What makes you say that?”

“This is the last item on my list for my grandma.”

“Is it? Have we already done that much?”

“It's been a very fun two months and I couldn't have wished for a better collaborator.” Noah leans over with his lips in a pout and Yejun closes the distance between them to give him a quick peck, making sure to keep their messy hands away from each other's bodies. He smiles as he backs away and brings his hands up, balled in determined fists. "Now let's make the best gravy she's ever tasted.”

42) Cook a 5 course meal for grandma ✓

*

The bucket list items related to Noah’s grandma may have been checked off but there is one other surprise Yejun has in mind. It’s very convenient for his scheme that even after this year and a half of dating - and an even longer period of time that they've been intimate - he and Noah can't get enough of each other and it's completely natural for him to take Noah’s hand into his own as they watch TV. He plays with his fingers and compares them to his own, one by one.

Yejun visits a jewelry store in Seoul at his earliest convenience. In the spring of his 30th year, he will propose to Han Noah.

*

Noah has a boisterous reputation amongst the citizens of Haewol-ri but he has always preferred to be more private with his personal life and romantic affairs so Yejun plans a date night for them at home. He started preparing the meal the night before and after work that day, he buys flowers for no particular reason (or so he tells Noah).

At the dinner table, Noah is telling a story about an old friend that he ran into at the markets - a friend that had moved to Seoul for work but was planning on returning to raise a family in Haewol-ri.

Yejun observes his face as he talks, caught up in the story - how his eyes turn into crescents and how his nose scrunches up when he laughs. He’s not sure if Noah has taken notice of how the lights are 30% dimmer or how he has lit a candle with their favourite scent. The ambient lighting catches on Noah's long golden hair and the flicker of the candle flame illuminating his face reminds Yejun of the first time they went camping together, after they had become friends and truly opened up to each other. Yejun had planned this date meticulously for Noah's sake but maybe he has tricked himself into getting into a romantic mood instead because even though the proposal was supposed to happen after dinner, he can’t help himself after Noah finishes telling his story.

It’s the mood lighting and the scent of the candle and Noah’s laugh echoing through their home tonight, the same way that it does every night.

“Will you marry me, Han Noah?” he asks so suddenly and so plainly that it shocks even himself.

“Oh my god, what?” Noah blinks rapidly and his mouth stays open.

So, he had not clued onto the extra romantic things that Yejun had done. Yejun isn’t disappointed by this, in fact he kind of takes pride in it. Noah is constantly praising him and saying that he’s the most romantic boyfriend ever so he takes it as a compliment that this feels like a normal date night at home.

Yejun reaches into his pocket and pulls out a white jewelry box. He places it on the table and says, “I know it won’t be legally recognised but we can still exchange rings and it can still mean something.”

“Jun-ah, are you doing this for the sake of my bucket list?”

“I did see it on your list but that’s not why.”

“Baby, I’m happy. I really am! But I don’t want you to feel pressured because you saw it on my bucket list.”

“Do you want to marry me?”

“Yes, I do– but it’s not that, it’s more about–”

“Good. Because I want to marry you. For a while now I’ve pictured us spending the rest of our lives here in Haewol-ri and now, I picture us having a ceremony in front of everyone we love. My parents will walk me down the aisle and your grandma will walk you.” He opens up the jewelry box and continues, “She gave me these rings and I had them resized for us so will you marry me, Han Noah?”

Noah blinks away tears. “Yes. Yes, of course. Yes.”

*

It all happens very quickly. From the day Yejun proposed to the day of their wedding there is only three weeks – just enough time for them to give their guests notice and still in spring, a season that he has grown unreasonably attached to.

They agreed that they didn't want anything too elaborate - only a ceremony followed by photos - but even if the plans for the day are simple, the guest list is by no means small. It started with their family and close friends but because this is Noah and because the whole town loves him, the list of people who needed to be invited was never ending. In the end, the town would have to be functionally closed for the day.

On the morning of the wedding, Yejun gets ready at Eunho’s house on their family farm after spending a night there. Noah insisted on spending the night apart and not seeing each other until the ceremony which proved to be surprisingly difficult to bear. It wasn't as though they had not spent nights apart before but the anticipation makes Yejun check his phone now and then until he decides to send a message to Noah to calm his nerves.

NAM YEJUN
I can’t wait to see you

NAM YEJUN
I love you ♥️

HAN NOAH
♥️

HAN NOAH
I love you

HAN NOAH
You're the best bf in the world

HAN NOAH
That’s the last time I can say that 🤭

Yejun almost dies on the spot reading these texts.

In the meantime, Eunho spots his dog, Peuldaengie, playing with a bouquet of flowers that was placed on a chair. She sniffs at it curiously and starts nibbling.

“Peuldaengie, no!!” Eunho wrestles the flowers from her mouth and tries to get her to spit out as much as he can. He turns to Yejun who hurried over as soon as he heard the commotion. “Hyung, is she going to be okay? I got it out of her mouth as soon as I saw her going for it”

Yejun picks up the bouquet from the floor and places it on a table out of her reach. He makes Peuldaengie open up her mouth and gives her a pat for good measure. “You did good, Eunho, it doesn’t seem like she actually ingested anything. We should keep her with us today in case anything happens so I’ll be there.”

“I’m sorry hyung, I thought I had her leash on.”

“It’s okay. As long as she’s safe, it’s fine.”

“But now my suit is dirty.”

“Do you have another suit? Any colour will do.”

NAM YEJUN
I’m so so sorry, there was an accident with Peuldaengie so we’ll be slightly late

HAN NOAH
It’s okay, we’re going to be a little late too lol

Eunho walks out from his bedroom sheepishly, now changed from his black suit to a tan linen suit.

“This is the only other suit I have but maybe it's not appropriate for a wedding?”

Yejun plucks a few small flowers from the bouquet on the table and pins it to Eunho’s jacket. “It's perfect. This is a beach wedding after all.”

*

The wedding invitation states that the ceremony was to begin at 11am but it’s not until 11:30am that the most important people arrive. Despite being behind schedule and despite the suspicious dark cloud looming over the sea looking like it’s quickly approaching, everyone is in a good mood, chatting as they take their seats.

On the beach shore, there are white lawn chairs with bows tied to the back of each one – blue ribbon bows to match the ocean – meticulously placed in rows. There is an aisle running through the centre of the seats and it leads to an arch covered with leafy vines and white flowers. The celebrant, one of the teachers from the local high school, waits under the arch.

Their much favoured friend group maknae, Hamin, is sitting in the front row. His role for the day is tech support, wrangling all the guests and getting things flowing from one part of the ceremony to the next. He took a few days off from his university classes to come back to Haewol-ri for the wedding and was the one who set up the ceremony that morning with his parents.

He checks his phone and watch and after a nod, presses play on his phone.

Sweeping violin music starts to play over the speakers set up next to the floral arch and the guests quiet down, turning around to face Eunho standing at the end of the aisle. He walks down the aisle in slow, measured steps. In one hand is a bouquet and in the other, he is holding onto a leash that leads to Peuldaengie who follows closely behind. He settles to the left of the celebrant.

Next is Yejun with his parents on either side of him. He is wearing a white suit and is beaming as he looks around and sees friendly faces he has gotten to know well during the last two years. When he takes his place in front of the celebrant, Hamin fades the music out.

After a few moments, another song starts up – a delicate piano track this time – and Bamby walks down the aisle wearing a brown suit, grasping his bouquet with both hands. Yejun catches the younger man’s ears turning red as he looks to the left towards his boyfriend, Eunho. It was definitely not planned but they look like they could be the ones standing up the front too in their matching tan and brown suits. Bamby averts his eyes and takes his place on the right.

The music swells and finally, Noah walks down the aisle, arms linked with his grandma's.

Yejun has seen Noah in a suit before but never in a white suit. His heart races at the sight of this beautiful man in a crisp white suit with a cherry blossom boutonnière pinned to his jacket. Yejun remembers the spring when he first saw Noah walk past underneath a cherry blossom tree. He looked like he had jumped from the pages of a manhwa back then and despite the grey weather right now, the world through Yejun’s eyes is as saturated as it was that day two years ago.

They lock eyes and Noah smiles, he is visibly nervous and timid for once but he does not look away until he reaches the end of the aisle.

Suddenly, the grey clouds from above open up and a storm begins to roll through.

“Everyone, let's go to the bus shelter for now!” Hamin yells out through his hands cupped like a megaphone around his mouth.

*

From the bus station, Yejun looks wistfully at the beach and the ceremony set up that Hamin had painstakingly worked on, currently being pelted by rain.

Noah approaches him from behind and says light-heartedly, “This is what we get for being late to our own wedding.”

At first, they only chuckle at this but as they face each other, they begin full-belly laughing.

“Why were you late anyway?” Yejun asks after the laughter subsides.

“I was looking up youtube videos with Bamby because we couldn’t figure out how to properly put a bow tie on. It is unbelievably hard, you know?”

Yejun snorts and forgets about the stress he was feeling from the ceremony getting cut short. “He’s supposed to be a teacher and you’re supposed to have an engineering degree. I don’t know what’s worse.”

“Shh.” Noah gives him a light shove on his shoulder. “So what do we do now? Do we just continue here?”

Yejun can tell that he's joking but Noah is so free-spirited at times that this idea could spiral and take shape. He really could convince everyone that this is a viable alternative.

“Noah, darling. I love you but we are not getting married at the bus station.”

“This place has some significance, you know?”

“How so?” He plays along, indulging Noah's whims as always.

“It’s the first place I ever saw you.”

Yejun's eyes widen and his voice softens. “It is?” His expression melts into a smile and knows he's already in the process of being swayed.

“Oh, have I never told you that? Remind me to tell you that story some time.”

Hamin’s parents wave at them from a distance and jog over with excitement on their faces. “Hey, boys,” Mr Yu says, “We've all taken the day off already so do you want to use the cafe?”

Yejun gasps. “We can do that? Oh my god, the cafe has always looked so romantic to me.”

“Of course, you can. It would be our honour,” Mr Yu replies.

“You’re not just saying that it looks romantic because you’re about to get married to the man who did the renovations, are you?” Mrs Yu chimes in.

“And who would blame him?” Noah leans on his tip toes to hug Yejun from behind and rest his chin on his shoulder.

Mrs Yu laughs. “You’re not even newlyweds yet and you’re already like this. We can head there now and set it up. Just stay here for 30 minutes, okay? Hamin can help let everyone know.”

*

Their second go at a wedding ceremony begins at 1:30pm in Asterum Cafe.

The Haewol-ri establishment run by Hamin’s parents has been in operation for almost two decades now and it’s a place that has seen Noah, Bamby, Eunho and Hamin grow up over the years. It’s a place Yejun has come to frequent and love too. Even now with Hamin spending most of his time studying to become a doctor in Seoul, it remains the group’s favourite spot to meet.

Noah worked on the renovations at Asterum Cafe five years ago, breathing new life into it and turning it into a must visit spot for any tourists. The eclectic interior of the cafe definitely makes for a unique and lived-in wedding ceremony venue. On the walls are framed photos of Haewol-ri and the people in town, the space is filled with plants on the shelves and hanging from the ceiling and the cafe’s wooden chairs and tables have been re-arranged to form the rows of seats and the aisle for the ceremony.

The procession down the aisle begins again – Eunho and Peuldaengie, Yejun and his parents, Bamby and Noah and his grandma – and it’s the same but different and perhaps even better. In a way, Yejun feels like the storm might have been a blessing because he gets to see Noah walk down the aisle towards him twice now. This time he really takes it all in. He takes in how Noah is surrounded by the people he loves and how his Grandma, who started all of this, has the proudest smile on her face.

The cherry blossoms pinned onto Noah’s jacket are a little worse for wear because of the rain but rather than thinking that this is a shame, all Yejun thinks is that there are so many springs and blossoms they will have the chance to see together. To Nam Yejun, Noah will always remind him of spring. Two springs ago was when they met, last spring was when Noah asked him to move in and now at the end of this spring, they begin the rest of their lives together.

They face each other at the end of the make-shift aisle, next to a blackboard with the cafe’s monthly specials, and recite their vows.

*

The wedding ended later than expected and they leave Cafe Asterum at 10pm with tired feet and full hearts.

The short walk home on this late Spring evening is more chilly than refreshing so they link arms and share body warmth. They exchange short words now and then but the silence underneath the glow of the street lights is nice on its own and gives Yejun time to remember all his favourite moments from the day.

After the ceremony and the countless group photos, all the guests continued to the upstairs space of the cafe for an impromptu party and there was one moment during the party when Yejun realised that this was the perfect night.

It was after he took a shot of soju with his friends, including Hamin now that he was over 19 years of age. Yejun, with his face flush and body pleasantly warm from the effects of the alcohol, was standing on the outskirts of the dance floor next to Hamin and they were catching up about younger man's university life when Noah, who was on the other side of the dance floor, caught his eye. He was in the middle of an active conversation with Yejun’s parents when their eyes met and for a moment they shared a tender look. Then, Bamby and Eunho suddenly waltzed through their line of vision, tightly holding onto each other on the dance floor but bickering at the same time. Noah held his lips together in a taut line to stop himself from laughing and returned to the conversion with his parents-in-law. Yes, that was the perfect moment.

Standing at the front entrance of their home, Noah dramatically stretches an open palm out and gestures for Yejun to take it. Once their hands are clasped, they step through the front door together even if it means that they have to squeeze in, shoulder to shoulder.

“Our first time coming home as a married couple,” Yejun comments in a daze, still holding onto Noah’s hand.

“Is this different from what you used to imagine?”

“Yes, but it's better than what I used to imagine.”

“Did you used to imagine carrying a bride through the door instead?” Noah asks. He is bent over, taking off his shoes with one hand while the other is still holding onto Yejun who stands sturdy and still for support. “You can carry me through our bedroom door instead if you want.”

Yejun chuckles. “Do you think I have the upper body strength for that? Isn't that more your kind of thing?”

Now it’s Yejun’s turn to take off his shoes one-handedly, refusing to let go of Noah’s hand even if it means that he almost stumbles in the process.

Noah drags him into their bedroom where they collapse onto their bed without undressing, the white of their suits and dress shirts blending in with the fresh white sheets. They lie on their sides, facing each other and smile silently. There was nothing that Yejun could have said that would have added to this day.

“I loved everything about today,” Noah says eventually, validating Yejun's thoughts, “even with all the mishaps.”

“I agree. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.”

“Except Peuldaengie almost getting sick from eating flowers, I presume.”

“Okay yes, except that. But she was fine the whole day so I don’t think she actually ate anything.”

“The little rascal.” After another stretch of silence and gazing into each other's eyes, Noah asks, "Hey, have you ever heard that in the west, when you get married, your friends and family are supposed to give you something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue?”

“I think I've seen that in some Hollywood romance movies?”

“Well, I was given all of those things today.”

“Really? What were they?”

“Something old was my parents’ wedding rings. Something new was obviously all of the gifts we got today. Something borrowed was Hamin’s parents letting us borrow the cafe for the day.”

“And something blue?”

“Your parents gave me you.”

Yejun wants to burst into tears at how sweet that sentiment is. His bottom lip protrudes and trembles as he fights to hold it in.

“Oh no, I can’t make you cry on our wedding day.”

“That’s actually the one thing I was certain I would do, like, my whole life.” There are now tears flowing down his nose bridge and cheeks onto the sheets but he doesn't want to hold them back and he can’t stop smiling at the same time either. “I bet you’ve been practising that line all day.”

“Yep. Pretty proud of myself for that one.” Noah grins and pretty crinkles decorate the edges of his eyes - crinkles that will settle into the most beautiful fine lines as they grow old together.

Yejun places a palm on Noah's cheek and as he smoothes his thumb over the cheek and then his bottom lip, he says, “I'll always be your something blue.”

He leans in and kisses his husband.
