The neighborhood lays calm before you, the streets quiet and empty. Only the moon dares to stick out its cold beauty, shining weakly down on the figure walking on the cold pavement. The wind sees this opportunity to blow with all its might, shaking trees and sending leaves twirling through the air in a messed up and chaotic dance. Soon the clouds would open up to shower the world with their merciless drops. You could smell the brewing storm and the coming rain in the air night air.
You aren't bothered by that. After weeks of summer heat and dryness the rain was more than welcome. You make her way towards your old house, giving a crow sitting in the tree a nod. The animal returns this gesture with a craw, taking off into the nightsky above. Looks like you're not the only one wanting to get home before the storm hits.
With a click the door unlocks, the keys rattling as you throw them into the bowl you kept on the small commode near the clothes rack. It's been a long day on your stupid job at the movie store with too many stupid customers getting in your way. Sometimes people can't even use their eyes to find the things right in front of their noses, it's unbelievable.
You flop down on the old couch, opening your laptop. Staring at the blue screen for half a minute your fingers tap the wood of the table, trying to escape the silence with the small sounds.
For a month now you have been living in this old house your grandpa inherited you. As soon as you had enough money you moved here, states away from any connections you had of your past life. Cutting ties, the little you had, you grabbed a few things and drove to his hometown in your old pickup truck. And boy did the house not disappoint.
Okay, house is an understatement. It could count as a small mansion. A jewel between other old buildings. It's spacious, big enough to fit multiple people without any problems. The furniture was still in okay shape as your grandfather left everything as it was. There was an attic you never went up to as the ladder wouldn't budge no matter how hard you tried to get it down. There's also a basement where they had kept the wine until it was all sold shortly after his death. Dust covered everything and you couldn't even breathe when you first stepped down there. And then was the secret of the place. A hidden room right next to your bedroom..
One thing about your grandfather, what no one besides you knows, is that he used to be a killer way back in the day. He wasn't famous, only killing a handful of people who had tried to get his house but that didn't stop him from making headlines in the small local newspaper of the town. They dubbed him the "Richwood Bunny Killer" as he was wearing a makeshift bunny mask when someone snapped a photo of him with a bloody knife in the woods.
But, to his and your surprise, they never caught him. It was a secret he literally took to his grave. But he didn't hide his diary which held all his thoughts and secrets. You found it literally under the pillow of the couch. Or maybe he put it there so you find it.. Clever. That way you learned about the room, leading to you discovering both quickly.
In the room you found an old mask, its paint crumbling as soon as you touched it. It was supposed to portray a bunny before the time won the attack against it, making it barely recognizable. On the wall, neatly placed, are knives, a bear trap and an old photograph of your grandfather, your grandmother holding you as a baby. He loved you like his own child, especially after finding out that your parents couldn't give two fucks about you. When he died, you stayed longer then everyone else at his grave. At least he was laid next to your grandma so they are back together. A sweet thought...
As a month went by of you living in the house, you noticed the downside of the situation. It was quiet. Way too quiet.
You were never one to socialize too much nor too little but the silence weighs heavy on your soul. The whole place seems to hold its breath, keeping alive the time where your grandfather was still around. It's like being trapped in a time capsule. All alone. No one there. Only the old furniture gasping and groaning under the weight of time, creaking and squeaking to voice their misery.
The walls had ears and eyes, watching you as you creak up and down the stairs, opening cabinets and drawers just to hear a sound. It's suffocating you and the dust appearing everywhere as soon as you put away the duster isn't helping.
With a simple click of the mouse the browser opens, allowing you to see the page you left open last. A community post board where you left a single ad out of desperation, asking for a roommate. You thought it might help having someone around to talk to and share the chores as the house is big. For now, no one has answered. But why? It was a really great offer! Okay, sure, the house is said to be haunted but it's nonsense. Just another rumor your grandfather spread to keep his peace. Maybe you'll find an answer tomorrow..
You close the laptop again, rubbing your eyes. It has become late and you have work tomorrow so you might as well get some rest. After all, the ad doesn't run away. And if anyone really wants to live here, they have to wait until you're up in the morning. You walk upstairs, counting the creaks the stairs make on the way.
One.. Two.. creak
Three.. four.. five.. creak
Six.. creak
Seven.. eight.. creak
Nine.. creak
Ten.
Nothing out of the ordinary it seems. You go into your bedroom, changing out of your clothes and switch to more cozy ones to sleep in. Laying down, you count the cracks in the ceiling until falling asleep. Tomorrow is another day.
