Chapter Text
A man standing 5'8 and a woman standing 5'4 walk into an open elevator inside an office building, both coworkers, nothing else.
They hardly knew each other, but what they did know was that both their siblings were best friends, though their siblings never really introduced one to the other.
The elevator was slow, playing jazzy music as it filled up with more and more people from different floors, all with a 9-5 to get to, and nobody talked.
It wasn't until all the people surrounding them disappeared. The elevator was heading to the last floor.
The elevator was now playing "True" by Spandau Ballet, and the man thought it was a great time to strike up a conversation. He looked messy, wearing a loose tie, and it felt awkward to talk to the pretty woman beside him.
Perfect, clean, neat. The bag she carries looks classy, she stands firm with perfect posture and smooth hair. It's like the man couldn't stand a chance if he were to confess to her.
But then, there goes the saying. 'Take a leap of faith.'
" Hey. Same floor, right? I'm Jonathan. " He says nervously, looking at the woman, seeing such beauty for the first time.
" Yeah, why? " The woman looks back at him.
And that was the first time he ever fell in love at first sight.
A woman so perfect that he'd rather give up than talk to her.
Jonathan was so spaced out, lost in the beauty in front of him, that he snapped back to reality, not wanting to end the conversation awkwardly.
" Sorry, I'm just nervous, I.. uh, how are you? " Jonathan chuckles nervously, scratching his head.
The woman looks at him and smiles, laughing softly.
" No worries, I get that a lot. I'm fine, how about you? Jonathan, was it? "
My name. That's my name.
In his head, he's shy. He's never really talked to anybody besides his boss and the people he's collaborated with.
" Yeah.. I'm doing alright, last night was really messy for me. "
.
.
.
" And yeah, it's Jonathan. What's your name? "
He shouldn't have said that, he shouldn't have! He thought to himself.
He's scrambling for the next response, something proper, something unlike him, something almost fake just to impress her. But he knew, deep down, that he'd fail.
" I'm Nancy, Nancy Wheeler. "
Wait.. that's the same last name as my brother's best friend!
Jonathan reacts with shock, and Nancy looks confused.
" Why? Is it because my name sounds bad? "
" No.. no, it's just that's the same last name as my brother's best friend. "
This turned out to be.. awkward.
Like some sort of reunion where nobody actually knew each other until now.
Nancy perks up, smiling. " Oh! So you must be the oldest Byers boy, you live near our house, right? Will always plays board games with Mike and their group at our place, for hours. "
" Yeah! Yeah.. that, uh, this was unexpected, I guess. " Jonathan stumbles over his words, then laughs the awkwardness off.
Unexpected, really. He looks at her for a moment, his eyes not quite leaving her.
" So you're also working at The Hawkins News? " Nancy says, brightening, glancing at his appearance. " That's a coincidence. I always thought the older Byers brother worked somewhere far from Hawkins. "
A far away place..? I mean, that's an okay assumption. People have thought worse.
" I've heard worse! I mean.. not that much worse, but a little worse than what you said. " Jonathan smiles, scoffing.
That came out like word vomit. I hope I covered that up, he thought.
Nancy laughed. She was happy talking to him.
It's like Jonathan was a comedian, but a nervous, shy one, like he doesn't talk to people much. Nancy thought he seemed like a nice guy, friendly and a little flustered.
" No worries. People assume I'm working some high position, or like, that I'm a model, you know? "
" I mean.. people would think that you're pretty.. and.. " Jonathan looks away for a second.
" You think I'm pretty? " Nancy looks up at him, tilting her head.
" I know a lot of people do. You're smart and pretty, that's what I've heard from our co-workers.. yeah. " Jonathan's cheeks go slightly red at the compliment he's just stumbled into giving her.
" Thanks. I think you're really funny. " Nancy smiles back at him.
The elevator doors open. Finally, no more awkward talking. Jonathan lets out a quiet sigh of relief.
The song resumes as both of them walk out of the elevator.
(I bought a ticket to the world
But now I've come back again
Why do I find it hard to write the next line?
Oh I want the truth to be said..)
