Chapter Text

Once upon a time there were children. Less children actually, more teenagers. After all, what is a book without teenage angst?

Before we begin, let me tell you about our tale’s backstory.

In the city of Bismont, the capital of Trealor, the Minister of the country, Felix, was thinking of ways to not get overthrown. Felix was a simple man. With his receding hairline, pointy chin, and grey mustache, he looked like the average Disney villain. While his looks portrayed his personality quite well, the country of Trealor was led to believe that he was trying to do his best for the country; and well— they actually were doing more or less okay, despite their obliviousness.

Recently, the head scientist of Trealor found a way to enhance human abilities. They could receive an injection that gave them powers (called “divinity”) alike to those of demigods from Greek tales. They were categorized into several groups, although each one had side effects and enhanced strength.

Zeus: Can summon lightning. In rare cases, they can fly.
Poseidon: Can speak to marine animals, can breathe underwater, and rarely can do water-bending
Hades: They can phase through objects at will. Turn invisible for short periods of time as well. (occasional shadow control and fear induction also)
Apollo: Have incredible music abilities and can sort of hypnotize with their music. Are good at archery too.
Athena: Intelligent. Can strategize well, and stores and processes information quickly.
Ares: Although all “demigods” have boosted strength stats, these people have the most. Can summon classic weapons at will. (though not guns, as those are regulated)
Hermes: Stealthy, pickpocketers and can talk smoothly as well have enhanced speed.
Aphrodite: Charmspeak and witchcraft.
Hephaestus: Immunity to fire, sometimes fire-bending. Skilled in forging and metal work.

After prolonged use of their divinities, the user may experience head aches, fainting, dizziness, and nausea.

You might be wondering why not have a super-being that has all the injections. The government did attempt to create such a person. Unfortunately, the person tested on was not able to contain such power and his body turned against him. Quite a painful death if you ask me, so the government kept this tragic event behind the scenes.

Felix decided that every twenty-five years, about thirty children of the age of eight would be selected to become his loyal staff members. Each one would receive an injection according to their personality. Their old names would be forgotten and buried, and their last names would be based on their “godly parent”. The place they would be held was called (placeholder), and the head of it was an old lady that was all sharp angles and no personality, Mistress Devyn. If they were not compliant, or not up to standards, they would be sent to the Purification Center to be adopted. Nobody knows where the Purification Center is or what it looks like, but the children supposedly get adopted and can forget about this whole ordeal.

And thus our story begins. There was a group of eight teenagers, rather close, as they had known each other from a young age. Rowan, a courageous and kind soul, was categorized as Zeus. Zoey was a quirky and lively Apollo child. Aurora was the shortest, a Hermes kid, skilled in all things criminal. Olivia was convincing and a rather comely Aphrodite kid. Mortem was a typically monotone, stereotypical emo kid. However with blond hair, he was a Hades child. Abby was a mature Athena tribute. Andrew was (unfortunately), the tallest and an Ares kid. And lastly Mello. She was a skilled Hephaestus kid, and one of the only ones in her batch of teenagers.

{A/N: don’t worry, you don’t have to memorize these names and houses}
