Chapter Text
Water. Earth. Fire. Air.
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony, protected by a team of twelve beings: Voltron. Voltron was the legendary defender, made up of five magical beings called Eagle Lions, their Paladins, the Avatar, and their spirit guide. It was said that when all twelve came together as a team, there wasn’t a force in either the Spirit or Material Worlds that could beat them. For years, people lived in peace, travelling between the nations without quarrel or fear.
Until the Avatar died.
Avatar Roku was last seen on his home island, fighting a volcano alongside Firelord Sozin and their dragon companions. When Sozin escaped while Roku was buried under the ash, many speculated that Sozin had left the Avatar to die. Speculation turned to fact when Sozin used a passing comet to launch a full attack on the Earth Kingdom and the Air Nomads sixteen years later.
Voltron without the Avatar was strong, yes, but without their figurehead, they were divided and stood no chance against the Fire Nation army. When Sozin turned his attention towards the Air Nomads with the purpose of striking down the Avatar before the next one could rise, King Alfor of Altea called the remainder of Voltron to his home.
The Alteans were a small sect of the Air Nomads, differing from their monk kin in their interest in battle tactics. It was Altea that had borne the final two members of Voltron only sixteen years prior; a young Airbender woman by the name of Allura and her skybison, Mouse.
By this point, Allura had mastered airbending and had begun her tutelage of waterbending under the Blue Paladin. There were whispers of an impending attack from Firelord Sozin, but Allura was not ready, Voltron was not ready.
“Father!” Allura begged, “You must send us to fight! I may not know all of the elements, but I can still fight! I must help our people, protect the balance of this world!”
“No,” Alfor said sadly, placing his hands on his daughter’s shoulders, “You cannot go out there. We must bide our time, keep you safe until the time is right for you to resume your training.”
“What about Voltron?” Allura demanded, “What happens to them?”
Alfor shook his head, I must send them away. I am sure that Sozin plans on taking them, making sure that Voltron can never be formed again. He may kill the Eagle Lions, or use them for his own purposes. I cannot let that happen.”
“No!” Allura insisted, “We must try! We need Voltron! The world needs us!”
Alfor smiled softly then spoke in a sad tone, “Oh, my dear, sweet daughter. If all goes well, we shall see each other soon. May you rest in peace.”
“Father,” Allura tried, but it was far weaker this time. She could feel her limbs going numb, her eyelids growing heavy. Soon, the world faded to black.
