For You Are My Endeavour

Summary:

The archangel was deep in thought before he could hear the faint voice of Adam calling him, shaking his head – he looked at the human sitting in front of him, they were sitting at the familiar booth of the Red Wagon’s restaurant, the same booth from seven years ago when they’d escaped the Cage.

“Michael, are you okay?” Adam asked the archangel with a voice so gentle that it made Michael’s eyes softening.

“I am. What are we doing here again?” Michael’s head tilted in confusion, it seemed that angels had a habit of doing that.

“Celebrating our seventh year of freedom from the Cage, remember?”

or:: Adam and Michael go to their first diner date, to celebrate their four years of their relationship and seven years of their freedom.

Notes:

This work was originally written for Valentine's Day of this year but I never published it for some reasons. Not wanting to let it rot in my draft, I finally decided to post it because what better to post Midam for Valentine's Day? This is also the first fanfiction I post on this plateform, I'm still learning how we do this and as a new writer and beginner, I can't promise that my fanfictions will be 5-stars. I will definitely try to improve, though. My first language is not english and I apologize for mistakes whetever it's gramatical or the badly phrased sentences. The characters may be OOC and I'm sorry for that.

The title is from "My Endeavour" from Ruby Roberts, amazing artist !

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Red Wagon.

It was the first diner that Adam and Michael went to after fleeing the Cage where they’d been locked in for about ten years.

Although Adam didn’t need to eat since he had an archangel inside his body, he wanted to taste the foods that had disappeared from his tongue a long time ago.

Michael let him eat whatever he wanted – although, still reminding Adam to take care of his health – he was just here to keep the human company since he was reluctant to go back to Heaven, judging by the situation with God and the Winchesters and it seemed that Adam wasn’t too eager to try and find his brothers, he was still bitter that they had locked him in the cage with Lucifer for ten years, not daring to save him.

“So what about you,” Adam broke the silence between them, salting his fries, “Are you gonna go back to Heaven?”

“I don’t know. My brothers are dead, my father never returned and in so many ways I’m alone.” Technically, he wasn’t, he had Adam by his side, but he couldn’t shake away the loneliness he felt at this moment.

A silence, and then, “Same here.”, Adam took a bite of his food, tasting the flavor of the burger and fries he had deeply missed.

“It’s not like I have a family waiting to see me.” The Milligan finally looked up at Michael, there was no proper sadness in his tone, not bitterness, just acceptance.

“You have the Winchesters, your brothers.” Michael had a point, but could Adam really consider them brothers? After what happened?

“I met them once,” Adam wiped his mouth with a napkin, “And they let me rot in hell.”

Another silence between them, only the faint music coming from the jukebox was heard in the background, a soft melody in their turmoil.

“Family.” Michael’s smile went slightly upwards, his eyes filled with care when he looked at Adam.

“Family sucks.”

And he was damn right, family could suck sometimes, but family doesn’t always end with blood, and Michael will try anything he can to make sure Adam could see that.

FEBRUARY 14TH 2026, Valentine’s Day.

The sun was shining, the birds were chirping a joyful and romantic chorus while flying around, the streets and restaurants were busier than usual – filled with couples laughing, smiling and looking at their partner with love in their eyes.

Some would consider this day as commercial while some will wait excitedly all year to hang out with their partner and treat them like they deserve to.

Michael never understood why humans were so thrilled about this day because why would they wait this day to take their partner out to a restaurant? Why would they wait this day to give their partner a gift? Why not do it multiple times in the year, without having the need to wait?

“We got out on December 12th, though?”

“Well, can’t someone celebrate their anniversary earlier? And, we also could… celebrate our four years together, it’s Valentine’s Day afterall.” Adam smiled brightly, it’d been four years already that he and Michael had been together, it’s probably not long – but they had both denied their feelings for so long until one of them took the first step… and it was Michael. Surprisingly.

“Right but you know how I feel about… Valentine’s Day.” Michael crossed his arms, looking around him. Couples dining with their significant other, smiling and laughing heartedly.

“I know but come on, Mikey, try to relax for once, please?”

Mikey, this nickname could mean nothing to someone else but to Michael, it meant something. It reminds him that Adam trusted him enough to still be Michael’s vessel, even after getting out of this filthy cage. For some reasons, the nickname always made Michael’s “heart” flutter.

“I will try. Only for you.” The celestial being’s voice softened, his voice quieter and his eyes locked on his boyfriend that was now talking to the waitress – who looked confused as to why someone was ordering a Valentine’s Day’s special meal to eat by himself, but oh well, humans were full of surprise.

Only did she know that an invisible archangel was sitting right next to her, and not any archangel… Michael – God’s son, the warrior of God, the protector of Israel, Lucifer’s brother…

After a few moments, the waitress left with a smile and Adam turned back to his lover, the junkbox changed music and landed on “Goin’ Straight” by Dick Jr. & The Volunteers, it was the same music from seven years ago.

“What should we do after?”

“Going back to the apartment, you should rest.”

“I don’t need sleep, Michael, since you are inside of me–”

“But you are still human, Adam.” Michael blurted out firmly, looking straight into the human’s eyes.

“Right.”

Michael goes back to looking around the Red Wagon, it hadn’t changed much from how he remembered it – although there were Valentine’s Day decorations, of course, heart shaped strings of light hanging at the ceiling and since the diner was in the darkness, it created beautiful red glowing light across everyone’s face, accentuating their features.

He didn't know how long he had stayed in silence while looking around the room until the waitress came back with a plate of burgundy beef, a side of mushrooms and pasta and of course – wine as a drink.

Adam thanked the waitress and took the glass of wine with a gentle grip, looking at Michael with a soft smile and held it in the air before taking a sip.

Michael looked at his lover, his lips twitching upwards, he was happy that Adam was enjoying himself, even after everything that happened in his life… the loss of his mother, the idea of being a doctor that went downhill, when he died at only nineteen and was brought back for the Apocalypse…

The archangel shook the thoughts away, it wasn’t the right time to reminisce about the past right now, so he contented himself to be happy for his lover, to relax just like he promised to, for once and to listen to his boyfriend’s yapping about whatsoever.

And maybe… Valentine’s Day wasn’t too bad.

Notes:

I headcanon that Adam and Michael do diner dates every year at the Red Wagon. Knowing Jake Abel, if he was aware of this, he would surely make it canon.

I hope you enjoyed this fanfiction and thank you for reading it! 💙
