Work Text:
Her eyes scanned over the variety of colors in the store, feeling anxious. How was she gonna choose?…
…Nene Yashiro was a woman on a mission today.
She wanted to get nail polish for her friend. The problem, though, was that she had no idea what color he would even like.
A few days ago, when dealing with those weird hands, he’d wanted a manicure. She had said she’d do it afterwards, since she wanted to get rid of the hands as quick as possible, but they had gotten caught up with the Mitsuba stuff.
So now, here she was, trying to think of what color he’d like because she had just remembered the request last night, and since she couldn’t really talk to him unless she was in the school, she had no idea what he’d want. He didn’t technically mention anything about… bright colors, but she feels like he would be one to like stuff like that. But none of the colors she had at home seemed up his alley so she’d went to the store.
Picking colors was so hard…
As she looked around, a sparkly orange polish caught the corner of her eye. She picked it up and examined it, before smiling and deciding this was good and that she’d buy it for him.
Nene payed for it and walked out of the store, putting it in her bag and walking back home. She had purposely woke up earlier than usual so she could buy the polish and still make it back home in time to be able to grab the rest of her nail stuff and get ready for school, since the store was a little bit away. Even though it’s a longer walk than the other stores she frequents, it has such great polishes! It’s where she buys all of hers.
When she got back home she greeted her mom quickly, throwing out a “Hi mom!” and a wave while running to her room.
Nene had already spread out her manicure stuff (along with a teal polish for her own nails) onto her desk before she left so it would be easier for her to grab after she came back, so she put it all in her bag and then went to go take a shower and put on her uniform.
After making sure her hair was dry, she put it in a bun since it would be easier to make sure her hair doesn’t mess with the manicure. At least she didn’t have to worry about Hanako’s, obviously, since his hair was short.
Making she has all her stuff for school in her bag as well as the manicure stuff, she went to go eat the breakfast her mom made and then put on her shoes to go to school.
She’s a bit early, but she had wanted to make sure she one hundred percent could make this happen so she had gave herself a lot of time.

After school, she walked to the bathroom to find him. Opening the door and walking over to the third stall, knocking on it.
“Hanako-kuuuun?” Nene called, dragging out the end.
She heard a small gasp behind the door and backed up just before the door flew open.
“Hello Yashiro!” Hanako greeted, floating over to her.
“Hi Hanako-kun,” She said back and then proceeded to sit down on the floor and reach into her bag. “I have something for you!”
He looked curious, crossing his legs and floating closer to the floor while she rummaged through the bag, before she put her manicure stuff down on the floor.
“The other day you said you had wanted one, and we never got to.” Nene spoke while she brought the stuff out. “So I brought it back here.”
“Aaaaanndddd~” She said in a sing song tone.
She pulled out the orange polish she had bought earlier today.
“I bought this for you! I felt like you would be one go for more brighter stuff but none of the colors I had at home felt like you would enjoy them, so I went to the store.”
She looked up from the floor but faltered at his neutral expression. He was just looking at the stuff on the floor with his mouth slightly open so you could see his teeth.
“Hanako?” She stared and then, when he didn’t answer, averted her gaze, sweating slightly. “Sorry, you don't have to wear the color if you don’t want to, I just thought-”
“No!” He snapped out of his thoughts. “It’s great! I like the color!”
Nene looked back up at him, relieved.
“But then…” Her question trailing off, hoping he got it.
“It was just… It was really nice of you.” Hanako blushed. “Buying me a brand new one. I do really like the color…”
Nene blinked and then smiled. “Of course.”
“Sooooo…. do you want to start?”
“Huh? Oh- yes! Yes. I do.” He said.
Hanako dropped so he was actually on the floor instead of floating above it and held his hands out.
“Actually, you should go wash your hands real quick before we start.”
“Right, I forgot about that.” He floated over to one of the sinks and washed and dried off his hands real quick. And then he floated back over, sitting down again and holding his hands out again.
Nene grabbed his left hand and a nail file, and started filing his nails down into a better shape. They were already really short and broken, so she had to be careful.
Once she had deemed them a worthy shape, she repeated it on the other hand.
He just watched her while she went through all the steps.
Eventually, Nene got to putting down the base coat down, and after it dried, she popped open the special nail polish and started putting down the first layer.
She stuck her tongue out of the corner of her mouth without even noticing, concentrating really hard. She was focusing on trying not to get nail polish on his skin near the nails. Nene was always horrible at not doing that, and while she didn’t focus as much at home and usually just peeled any spare nail polish off that hadn’t gotten on her nails, she didn’t wanna fuck it up for her friend. So she was trying to be as clean with her strokes as possible.
Once she got all of the first coat down, she let go of his hands and clapped her own together.
“I’ll start to do my own while we wait for your nails to dry! I won't put down any polish on my own for right now though, that'd be kinda hard to manage doing your coats and my coats at the same time… I’ll do mine after yours.” Nene jumped up and went to wash her hands to make sure they were extra clean, and then sat back down and repeated the whole process up before stopping before she would’ve done the base coat.
“Alright, yours should be dry by now…”
She grabbed the orange polish again and put on another layer. They waited for it to dry, and then repeated the process of putting on layers until she had put on the satisfactory amount, before finally she put on a top coat. They talked a bit while waiting for the layers to dry, and the whole time they had been doing this Hanako had a smile on his face.
“Oooookay!” Nene exclaimed. “I think the final coat is dry. What do you think?”
Hanako looked down and smiled even wider.
“It’s great, I really like it.” He admired it, the sparkliness shining from the light in the bathroom. “You’re really good at this, Yashiro.”
“Awww, thank you-”
“I wonder what else your hands could do.” He grinned at her stupidly.
Nene slapped him across the face.
“Ouch! Fuck, Yashiro that hurt-”
“You’re such a jerk.” Nene huffed out a breath.
Hanako laughed, the smile from earlier coming back after she slapped it off of him.
“B-but, it does look good. Thank you.”
Nene crossed her arms and looked away.
“Awww, come on, seriously? I’m sorry!” He grabbed her shoulder and shaked her lightly. “Yashirooooooo!”
She giggled for a short bit, before realizing she was supposed to be mad and turned even further away from him.
“See, you can’t be mad at me forever.” Hanako laughed.
Nene turned back towards him, rolling her eyes. “Fine… now get off me, I have to do my own nails.”
Hanako had gotten extremely close while trying to get her attention, so he floats up to behind her and watches her over her shoulder while she puts her own teal (and sparkly to match his) polish on.
“I like the one you picked out too.” Hanako said while she was applying the second coat, currently having his arms wrapped around her neck.
“Yeah, I thought that it’d be nice if we matched too, you know with ours both being sparkly.”
Hanako nodded. “The color looks nice on you too.”
Nene blushed and continued applying the coat. “Thanks…” She stuttered out.
After all the coats had finished drying, Nene examined her nails before grabbing Hanako’s hand and comparing their nails.
Nene smiled. “See, we match. This was fun.”
Hanako looked at their hands and nodded, the blush from earlier coming back.
“Yeah, it was.”
Nene let go of his hand and grabbed her phone out of her pocket to look at the time. “Oh- this took longer than I thought, hah. I should really get to cleaning.” Hanako nodded in response.

“…Number Seven, since when did you paint your nails?” Tsuchigomori commented.
