If It Weren't For You

Summary:

A birthday letter to Hanna-chan from Miyako

Work Text:

Hana-chan,

Happy birthday!

To be honest, I’m not really good at writing these things. You’re the first person
I’ve written a letter to in a long time. Through this letter, I hope I can properly tell
you how I feel. No… actually, that’s impossible even if I wrote a thousand letters.
Why? Because that’s just how much you mean to me.

Before I met you, I was becoming a hikikomori. I would stay at home for hours,
even days on end without interacting with anyone. I would cosplay and make
outfits sure, but even then I would keep them to myself. Honestly, I was a
coward. I didn’t even have the confidence to show others my interests given my
low self esteem. You showed me that there’s more to life than being stuck in an
endless loop. When I first saw you, I didn’t know why I wanted to be friends to
begin with. After lots of thinking, I realize that I needed you to raise me up and
become a better person.

Here is a little poem I made when thinking of you.

Carefree angel with golden wings

Let me touch your gentle hands as I stare in awe

Guide me from the self-induced darkness

To a place where I can smile forevermore

I can now say what that squirmy feeling I had when I first met you was. It was
love. Love for a gentle girl who became a light for me. Love for a carefree angel
who saved me from myself. Love for my first genuine friend that I would trust
and protect to the best of my abilities. Truthfully Hana-chan, I wouldn’t be
smiling nearly as much as I do today. So I mean it when I say thank you for
being a part of my life. I hope that the two of us can make many more precious
memories together.

Miyako Hoshino
