Chapter 1: Kyouka's problem

Chapter Text

Kyouka sat by the window, her gaze not breaking even when her brother ran up to his room. Kyouka loved her brother. No doubt about it, but right now she had something more important to worry about than her brother’s failing love life.

That thing?

Her own love life.

There was this boy in her class, Kenji. The only way Kyouka knew how to describe him was bright. And not in the smart sense. He wasn’t dumb, more just didn’t understand others. Kyouka couldn’t blame him, he grew up in a small farming town after all.

Kenji was incredibly nice, almost to a fault. I mean he managed to walk up to the meanest bullies and have a nice conversation with them on his first day. However that wasn’t what made Kyouka like him.

He didn’t care that she used to live on the streets, didn’t care that she was the only one to survive the accident. He just didn’t care. He cared about what she liked and how her day was going, he’d tell her about the bunnies back on his farm.

You see there was a school dance coming up and well she wanted to go with Kenji. There was no way she could ask Kouyou for help. She's too protective and would probably put Kenji through a thousand tests no matter how sweet he is.

Chuuya was, well, clearly failing his own love life so he was out. Her parents? No way was Kyouka going to do something so embarrassing. So she was out of luck.

The only other person who hung out around her was a kid named Q, well that’s that they went by. They often reminded Kyouka of Dazai with the bandages wrapped around their wrists. Q was also very often astrosized for being a “freak”. Sure Q was odd but they weren’t a freak.

She let her head fall into her arms that rested on the windowsill, letting out a huff of air. A hand ruffled her hair gently.

“What’s on your mind, Kyo?” A familiar voice said.

‘Kouyou’, Kyouka’s mind supplied as she kept her head down.

“Nothing.” Kyouka muttered.

“Uh huh. Yeah don’t believe it. I’m sure whatever it is I can help.” The older sister said, taking a seat on the bench beside Kyouka.

The little bench that was pressed against the wall was often the seat of Kyouka. She loved just sitting and watching the world outside. There was a nice plush cushion on it and a basket with blankets beside it.

“You won’t like it.” Kyouka stated, lifting her head out of her arms.

“As long as you didn’t do anything too illegal and got caught, it will be fine. After all-” Kouyou started.

“If you commit a crime, at least make sure no one finds out.” Kyouka finishes, sighing.

Kouyou chuckled. “Come on, tell your big sister what’s up.”

Kyouke debated whether it was worth lying or not. She settled on just telling the truth, her big sister would probably figure it out soon enough.

“Um,” Kyouka hesitated.”There’s this boy.” She felt her face start to heat up.

Kouyou raised an eyebrow. “Go on.”

“His name is Kenji, he’s in my class. He comes from a farm, but his parents wanted him to go to school, so he’s staying with his aunt here. He is the nicest person I know, he talks to everyone no matter what. He’s just got that sweet charm that makes even the meanest people smile. He doesn’t care about the rumors that surround me after, you know. He’s like a ray of sunshine, no clouds could ever get in his way.” Kyouka rambled, a small smile on her face, and rosy cheeks.

Kouyou smiled as she listened to her sister talk. Kyouka didn’t have a good childhood, she lost her parents when she was six, lived on the streets for 2 years, bounced around foster homes, until she got adopted by the Nakahara’s at 10. Her first year at school she wouldn’t talk to anyone, she barely talked at home.

She would stash food in her room, or hide away for hours. She always carried around an old flip-phone, and a little bunny plush, and refused to take it off(still does). Kids didn’t take kindly to her when she first got to school, she was smart and decently athletic but never talked. Most took her not talking as a personal offence, many thinking she thought she was better.

But now looking at Kyouka, Kouyou saw more light in her eyes than she had ever seen before. Kouyou decided right there and then that this Kenji boy would be good for her.

“So what’s the problem?” Kouyou asked.

Kyouka’s face flushed more. “Theresaschooldanceandiwanttogowithhimbutimtooscaredtoaskhimandhewouldntaskme.”

Kouyou chuckled. “You’re going to have to repeat that.”

“There’s a school dance and I want to go with him, but I’m too scared to ask him, and he wouldn’t ask me.” She whispered, at least this time kouyou could understand her.

“Why wouldn’t he ask you?” Kouyou narrowed her eyes.

“Because, no one would want to take the outcast to the dance.” Kyouka said, voice low.

Kouyou scoffed. “If he’s anything like you say, he would ask you out. You’re beautiful Kyo, you’re very smart, and strong, who wouldn’t want to ask you out?”

Kyouka tried to argue but Kouyou cut her off. “But what if you ask him?”

“He wouldn’t say yes.” Kyouka stated.

“I think he would. Plus what is there to lose, he doesn’t seem like the type to hold it against you.” Kouyou responded.

Kyouka didn’t say anything for a while, she looked out the window. “I’m scared.” She whispered oh so quietly.

Kouyou’s eyes softened and she gave her little sister a side hug. “Well why don’t I help you come up with a plan.”

Kyouka nodded.

The two brainstormed ideas, Kyouka said what Kenji liked and Kouyou listed ideas. They settled on a potted plant, specifically a part of Kyouka’s Pothos. With a plan set, it was just waiting for monday so Kyouka could ask him.
