Space, With Mizuki

Summary:

"Astronomy had never been an interest of Mizuki’s, but she knew her own solar system well enough."

In which Akiyama Mizuki explains her place in the universe.

Notes:

This is very self-indulgent, fun, spontaneous, and not held to that high of a standard. Hope you enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Astronomy had never been an interest of Mizuki’s, but she knew her own solar system well enough.

Kanade was the sun: a bringer of light to all in her orbit. Although lonely compared to the infinitely cold emptiness around her, she blessed those caught in her gravity with warmth.

Mafuyu was the Earth-equivalent: the catalyst for change, a delicate sanctuary for life. She was close enough to the sun to bask in its warmth without burning up; far enough to occasionally feel the chill of the void, ever reliant on those rays to keep her from freezing away into nothing.

Ena could be Jupiter: a protector, mighty and stunning. Everpresent to protect the Earth from asteroids. Close enough to know the sun and its warmth. And she was strong; strong enough to know pain and still be kind. Aside from being a ball of volatile gas.

Where did that leave Mizuki? Once, she might have said Pluto, at the farthest reaches of the sun’s influence, but now she thought she was more of a comet. Pretty to look at as it passed by, occasionally reaching out desperately to the planets, occasionally kissed by the warmth of the sun, but always flung back out into the darkness alone.

“That’s a stupid metaphor,” Ena grumbled, immediately clinging to her arm. “I’m not letting you go off far away alone—none of us want that.” She glared at Mafuyu and Kanade for support.

Kanade did her best to swallow her mouthful of noodles and nod, but Mafuyu only stared. “Why am I the Earth?”

All eyes fell on Mizuki expectantly. She balked. “Ah, well, um, I just meant that we’re all trying to help save you, and—just forget about it, it was just some silly thing I said out of turn. Hey Kanade, I know we literally just finished the last song, but how’s your demo coming along?”

“Let’s see…” Success! The attention was redirected to Kanade. Or almost all of it, Ena frowned at her one last time, squeezing her arm even tighter, before turning to Kanade with a placid smile.

Notes:

I wrote this impulsively while rereading the 1st Nightcord Worldlink. It was originally supposed to be from the perspective of a Mizuki around that time, but it ended up developing into more of a post-Ena5 Mizuki, which I am not that upset about.
