Work Text:

It came in the mail unbeknownst to Izuku. Of course he had, to some extent, known he was on the market. As a member of the ton and finally of marriageable age he knew his days of sweat stained sparring matches were long gone. He’s known it for a bit one should say. Even now as he starts reading the lightly fragrant letter his mother excitedly pressed into his hands Izuku can’t help but recall the moment he knew his days were…numbered.

It happened on a day the budding spring season was to roll over into the blazing summer days. A day when the sun would direct its rays ever harshly onto his skin leaving him feverish even in the shade but still a floral breeze would shyly pass to give reprieve to his heating skin. On this day Izuku had dragged his knight to their sparring grounds promising or more-so begging for just one dual before he was forced to attend his daily lessons.

“Just one” his knight had responded as Izuku tilted his chin down widened his eyes and looked up through his eyelashes.

“Just one” his knight had repeated in a gruff voice rolling his eyes at Izuku’s antics but nonetheless conceding. One had very quickly turned into 2 and then 3 until Izuku found himself back on the dirt eyes to the sky wiping his neck with a towel provided by a nearby maid.

“Perhaps I should be the silent shadow behind you sir knight” Izuku joked as he tossed the soft fabric to his knight who, despite Izuku’s jests did in fact look much better off than Izuku. Angling his nose up Izuku took a deep breath of a nutty almost caramelized smell perhaps the kitchen staff were whipping up something different for dessert. Despite Izuku’s lack of sweet tooth he found his heartbeat picking up in anticipation.

“As if you could ever be silent…my lord” Izuku rolls his eyes at the tacked on title but as he propped himself to respond he noticed how his knight’s eyes widened as he not so discreetly sniffed the air. “I’ll call for a maid” he hurriedly commented as he took a sharp turn towards the estate. Leaving Izuku dumbfounded. And the smell of caramelized almonds gone.

What transpired next was in fact the end. Izuku had presented. Late, quite late in fact. He had thought as did his family that he was a Beta. His Omega presentation was a welcome surprise for his house who had come on hard times since his father’s passing. Yet a nightmare for Izuku who had never envisioned his life as anything else but the head of his house.

Izuku remembers that day well and as he reads the request for his hand in marriage along with a scent marking. Izuku feels an impending doom and a heart wrenching loss. In that moment Izuku choose to turn his head towards the door where he saw his knight. Red eyes glaring at the letter and almond scent burning at the edges.
