Work Text:

“Oof, rough landing.”

Shaking himself off from his unceremonious barrel roll, Hii turned back to face his and Fu’s temporary holding cell. Zodyl’s unnatural trashbeast was using the winds to lift closer and closer to the border and Hii wouldn’t lie and say he didn’t feel any mirth at that. Something in his gut told him Zodyl’s plan was doomed to fail even if he knew that with Cthoni by his side his and Fu’s old boss would escape before an unfortunate variable entered his little experiment.

Still…. Now that he and Fu were technically back on a job (host) hunt he could spare some time to watch the outcome…. From a distance of course, didn’t want Fu’s body to get hurt.

It took him a few minutes but he found a small outcropping of rocks to hide under to avoid falling garbage before he sat down. Heaving a sigh he leaned back on his hands and stared up at the sky. He could feel Fu drifting in and out of consciousness, the other also curious about how things would turn out. The blonde cleaner's name also kept drifting around their head as a person of interest. If the cleaners made it out of Zodyl’s death trap he and Fu would definitely be looking for Enjin.

Speaking of blonde people…

“IS THAT FUCKING NOERDE?!” Yelling in disbelief and shooting up from his relaxed position his eyes watched as the warrior woman's body gained more and more momentum, the only thing slowing her wild fall being large chunks of trash flying around and bashing against her body. “Master Hii…big sis…need you too…no orders!” Fu weakly called in his mind but he was already moving, dodging and weaving debris to get to her.

Fu may not have had any orders to save Noerde but that's why he had Hii. Besides, even without Fu panicking over the older woman, Hii would have gone to get her. He had a great deal of respect for her since she went out of her way to provide him with a few sparring/training sessions and always treated Fu kindly, providing his sniveling half orders when needed. As he drew closer he reached out to catch the plummeting woman, bracing himself for impact.

And impact came when her limp body crashed full force into his embrace. Even attempting to stagger backwards to absorb some of the force did little to negate the power behind her body slamming into his at an awkward angle. He gasped as the wind was knocked out of him and even with his incredible strength he still got knocked on his ass.

But…. Noerde was safe and he could hear Fu’s relieved sigh faintly in the back of their head. Not even wasting time to try to catch his breath he sprang back to his feet and threw Noerde over his shoulder. He saw no reason to be gentle when they were still in danger.

BOOOM

Scratch That. They weren't just “in danger” they were in immense danger. Seems the cleaners had managed to break the core of the trashbeast and that could only mean more large chunks of trash raining down on them. Picking up the pace he only made it back under the rocks with seconds to spare. A full body slide baseball players would be jealous of saving them from a large couch barely missing slamming down on them by milliseconds.

Panting roughly he placed Noerde on the ground as gently as he could before flopping down next to her. Studying her as he caught his breath he frowned as he saw the state of her. There were a few bullet holes in her clothes with blood soaking the surrounding area but nothing fatal. Did one of the cleaners have a gun? What a fucking badass. Not the point. Continuing his shoddy checkup on the woman over nothing looked broken or dislocated but her beautiful hair was charred beyond repair. The only way she’d have luck growing it back was probably to buzz it all off and start over.

Speaking of hair…. He should have a look around where Noerde fell for her vital instrument later. He couldn’t imagine what would happen if Fu lost him. Not that it would ever happen but still. It seemed like the trash storm was clearing up anyways so he might as well get to it. “Thank you…. Master Hii…. Love…” Fu’s voice faded out again before he could finish his thought but Hii got the gist. “Whatever loser.” He muttered embarrassed by the soft sentiment. “Be right back big sis!” He called to a still unresponsive Noerde as he left their oasis of safety for what had at least become clear skies.

He ended up wasting his time because after an hour or two of looking he went back to check on Noerde and found the woman hadn’t moved an inch but now that the sun was shining he could clearly see the comb stuck in her destroyed hair. “So just fuck me I guess.” he grumbled angrily kicking aside a throw pillow that had landed near them earlier.

Whatever he didn’t have any more time for this. He needed to go find somewhere to stay the night so Fu could bandage them up and then so they could set off to find Enjin. He was sure Zodyl would send someone to look for Noerde anyway since he liked her so much. Tossing the woman over his shoulder once more he carried her around till he found a big mattress in the open to throw her on. The woman's body hit the plush surface with a dull ‘thwump’ noise but she remained motionless.

Mirei…don’t…forget…”

“Yeah, yeah, I know.” Brushing off Fu’s pestering he took the comb he’d put in his pocket for safe keeping and walked to the other side of the mattress where the upper half of Noerde’s body lay. Sliding Mirei into Noerde’s hand he closed her fingers around it in hopes muscle memory would at least kick in but her hand relaxed and her comb nearly slid free. Closing his eyes and clenching his fists to stop himself from picking her up again and taking her along. “She’ll be fine.” He told Fu through clenched teeth but Fu wasn’t even awake anymore.

He had Fu to worry about and that was already a hassle.

Turning around he ignored how heavy each footstep away from Noerde felt and instead focused on finding a hotel to break into, definitely had to find a place with complementary breakfast.
