Work Text:
Squinting against the darkness, Angela traced the imprint left by her lover's body. The sheets were cool, the coverlet pulled back where Moira had extracted herself.
Her pupils dilating and her vision adjusting, Angela climbed out of bed and followed the blue-light trail down the hall and into Moira's office.
She found her other half hunched over at her desk, focus creased across her brow.
"Liebling?" She rubbed sleep from her eyelashes. "Come back to sleep."
"I have an early meeting out of town." Moira's voice was husky, unused.
"It's still dark outside." Angela crept in and rested gentle hands on Moira's angular shoulders.
"I know." Moira brought Angela's palm to her lips before before returning to her keyboard, mechanical keys clacking softly. "I just need to write something down."
"Why do you write like you're running out of time?"
"Shh…" Moira hushed, clinging to her train of thought.
"Come back to bed. That would be enough." Angela sighed, sinking down to rest her chin on the crown of Moira's head.
"I'll be back before you know I'm gone." Moira said.
"Come back to sleep." Moira knew it was not a request, but she put up a fight anyway.
"This meeting's at dawn."
"Well I'm going back to sleep." Angela rolled her eyes.
"Hey-" Moira caught Angela's wrist as she pulled back, her grasp firm but fond. "I'm sorry, angel. I'm on my way. I'll join you in a moment."
"Okay." Angela pattered back to the bedroom.
Moira lingered in her office, letting out a heavy sigh. She raked her long fingers through her hair, which was overdue for a wash, before completing the memo she had been writing.
"Enough." The muttered to her shadow, rubbing her temples to try and ease the headache brewing there. Setting her computer aside, the geneticist joined her wife in bed.
Angela rolled towards the centre of the mattress as Moira slid beneath the covers, arms already extending to embrace her beloved.
Their breathing steadied in each other's hold. Angela's warmth and comfort managing to slow Moira's racing mind long enough for sleep to claim her.
Dawn was still four hours away. They could hold each other until then and that would be enough.
