Work Text:
Yoshiki laid on his bed, reading the new manga he’d gotten on wednesday and finally was able to read now that the weekend had came.
The day had been surprisingly calm. Breakfast was simple but good and the weather was actually nice for the spring.
It was nice to have such a nice weekend, especially after the week.
It felt almost like the teachers had came together to maximize the amount of tests they could put into a day every day of the week and the weather had been horribly hot. So hot that on the bike ride home he had ‘Hikaru’ would almost look like they’d jumped into a pool from how hot it was.
But today, it was calm.
A well deserved break.
Nothing could ruin it.
Nothing would ruin it.
And it technically wasn’t, considering it was ‘Hikaru’ who had came over.
Sure, a day to himself would have been nice, but he didn’t seem to be in a super energetic mood either. Both were so warm out from the week.
“You start readin’ that new manga you got yet?” ‘Hikaru’ curiously asked as he followed Yoshiki upstairs to his room, the familiar room no different then when he’d stayed the night for a sleepover two nights ago.
“Huh?” Yoshiki spoke up in surprise — focus ripped from his thoughts. He quickly focused however, glancing away before gesturing to the book currently sitting on his bed.* “Oh, yeah…”
He reached over and grabbed the book of his bed after, marking his page with a random piece of packaging he’d found.
“Is it any good? I was thinking of buyin’ it myself, but I didn’t want to waste money if it wasn’t.” ‘Hikaru’ questioned to a playful grin.
Yoshiki turned around the face him with a small shrug, thinking for a long moment while watching him put his bag aside.
“It’s alright, I guess.” He concluded after the long minute. “Overrated, but it ain’t horrible. It’s a niche topic.”
“Niche?” *He questioned as he reached out to grab the book off the nightstand.
He watched as he read the few first pages, watching him take in all the surprising details* “Niche, yeah.”
“Zombies aren’t niche, not liking zombies is niche.” ‘Hikaru’ scoffed lightly in amusement. He closed the book after reading just a few more pages, gently closing and putting the book aside on the nightstand once more.
Yoshiki thought about ‘Hikaru’s reply only to let out a small chuckle, smiling a bit. “Yeah, but people like all the blood n’ gore.” He explained as he sat down on the edge of the bed.
“This is more biology focused. Goes into the science of how zombies would actually work.”
‘Hikaru’ let out a small sound of intrigue at the other boy’s explanation. “Like how the virus takes over a person?” He asked, shifting where he sat on the edge of the bed before flopping down to lay on his side — hands used as a pillow.
Yoshiki hummed with a nod while getting comfortable himself, leaning back against his bed frame.
“Yeah. Im not down with the book yet, though. But I know they said it does something with a person’s brain stem… Attack it, or somethin’ to that.”
“When you’re down with it, can I read it?” He asked with a surprising gentle smile.
“When i’m done,” He replied, “I’ll be done with it by the end of the weekend, so i’ll just bring it on Monday.”
‘Hikaru’ let out a hum of his own to respond to Yoshiki. As he did he glanced at the book where it sat on the nightstand for a moment, but made no attempt to grab it or move at all. Instead, he brought his gaze back to him and grinned playfully.
“Hey,” He spoke up once more, sitting upright at the same time he did.
“Ya remember those face masks Asako was going on about last week?”
Yoshiki stared in surprise at the sudden shift in the conversation, raising an eyebrow in both confusion and curiosity. “Yeah, the um… Those fruit ones, right?”
‘Hikaru’s grin grew just slightly with a nod.
“Don’t know if she brought them there originally, but I found them in the grocery store when I went yesterday.” He explained, gesturing to his bag that he’d brought.
He shifted his gaze to his bag at the mention of it, suddenly realizing he forgot it was even brought until it had been mentioned and brought up.
“Oh.”
“Oh? Come’on Yoshiki, try one with me…”
His eyes widened at ‘Hikaru’s whine. A scoff of both annoyance and amusement left his lips when he leaned in closer, leaving a feet if even of space between them.
“That’s why you came over?” He questioned, glancing between ‘Hikaru’ and his bag for a moment.
“Well, no, not specifically.” He responded with a shrug as he finally leaned away.
“I just thought it would be more fun to do it today. And who knows, maybe our skin will be perfectly clear after?”
“Perfectly clear sounds unrealistic…” Yoshiki murmured.
Despite his hesitants at the thought of putting on the face mask he couldn’t resist smiling just a bit knowing the other wanted to hang out, even if for something as unimportant as a face mask.
He sighed before his smile grew slightly more, nodding with a light laugh. “Fine, did you get the same type that she bought?”
“No, they had a few options.” ‘Hikaru’ explained with a shrug.
He sat up before getting off the bed, walking over to his bag and unzipping it — two face masks pulled out after a minute of searching.
“They had stuff like cherry, grape, and orange… I thought you’d be alright with raspberry.”
“Raspberry? Why raspberry?” Yoshiki questioned, sitting up before he moved closer to the edge of the bed.
‘Hikaru’ shrugged as a response. “Felt right, I guess?”
“The smell isn’t as strong on the raspberry compared to the other ones.” He explained further, walking back the bed and sitting at the edge. He handed Yoshiki one of the face masks, with the plastic crinkling just a bit as he grabbed it.
He flipped the packaging over after, reading the ingredients and instructions. The other boy watched him do so for a moment before doing the same to his own face mask.
“It says keep it on for fifteen minutes.” He murmured, flipping the packaging once more as he lowered it into his lap.
“We could read the manga together?” ‘Hikaru’ offered with a smile. Yoshiki couldn’t help but imagine him with a wagging tail at how happy he looked to do something as boring as a face mask together.
He let out a chuckle with a nod at the offered idea not a second later.
———- ᜊ
After ten minutes of struggling with not dropping the face masks onto the floor and ‘Hikaru’ complaining about the unfamiliar slimy texture on his face they finally got the masks on.
Yoshiki wouldn’t say it, but the slimy feeling of the face mask reminded him of ‘Hikaru’s true form when it touches his skin.
“It said we have to keep these on for 15 minutes, right?” ‘Hikaru’ asked with a sigh as he laid on his back on the bed.
Yoshiki nodded.
“Closer to 13 or 14 minutes now, but yeah.” He said, looking down at ‘Hikaru’ where he laid. He smiled at the sight just a bit.
He reached his hand down after to gently ruffle the other’s pale hair, running his fingers through his hair to comb it down immediately after.
The other only let out a small grumble in complaint upon feeling his hair messed up but quickly quieted when his hair was pet a moment later.
Both Yoshiki and ‘Hikaru’ stayed quiet for a long minute, neither wanting to disturb the surprisingly peaceful moment between them.
‘Hikaru’ did finally speak up once almost a minute of silence passed.
“So, read the manga?” He asked with a grin.
Yoshiki nodded, pulling away to lean over and grab the book off his nightstand.
“Sure.” He said. “I’ll start from the start of it.”
‘Hikaru’ sat upright before shifting closer to his side in order to read it together while he shifted closer himself.
“You said you were somewhere near the middle?”
He nodded once more as he held the book between them, opening to the first page. “Around the middle, but closer to the start.”
‘Hikaru’ let out a hum to reply before resting his head on his shoulder.
He glanced down at the feel, but made no attempt to push him away.
The two remained like that for a long but peaceful seventeen minutes. They sat together, reading the manga in practically silence aside from their breathing or the occasional sound.
Just as Yoshiki flipped to another page he felt ‘Hikaru’ lift his head off his shoulder. He paused his reading, turning to look at him with a small look of confusion.
“It’s been almost twenty minutes.” He said, causing Yoshiki’s eyes to widen just slightly.
“Oh, right, the face masks.”
‘Hikaru’ chuckled at his response as he stretched his arms over his head.
“You forgot we had them on?” He playfully teased with a grin, and Yoshiki can do little more than shrug to defend himself.
“I got invested in the book.” He admitted.
He marked the page they had gotten to before leaning over and placing it on his nightstand to continue later, smiling just a bit at ‘Hikaru’s light laughter beside him.
“Let’s get them off then.”
‘Hikaru’ followed him as he got up and walked to the bathroom, trailing right behind him.
Once they entered the bathroom and began to take off the mask’s ‘Hikaru’ paused midway however, glancing over at him out of the corner of his eye.
“Are we supposed to wash our face after?” He asked, finishing pulling off his face mask as he did.
Yoshiki paused himself at the question, thinking deeply for a moment only to shrug.
“I don’t remember reading anything about washing your face after taking it off.” He replied before dropping his face mask into the trash. “You can if you want to, though. Probably wouldn’t be the worst idea, now that I think about it.”
‘Hikaru’ hummed in thought before shrugging himself.
“I’ll wash my face too then.”
———- ᜊ
The two washed their faces before they headed back to the bed.
“Does my skin look any clearer?” ‘Hikaru’ playfully asked, resting his head back on Yoshiki’s shoulder with a playful grin.
Yoshiki glanced down at his face. He failed to spot any real difference however, his face only looking slightly smoother if even.
“No, in fact I think you gained a pimple.” He teased, pointing to his cheek.
He let out a gasp at the teasing, lifting his head off of Yoshiki’s shoulder as he raised a hand to feel his cheek for a pimple.
He couldn’t resist laughing lightly at his panic, smiling even when ‘Hikaru’ shoved him by his shoulder with what could easily be called a pout.
“Not funny!” He whined, causing him to laugh just a bit more.
“A bit funny.” He teased.
He reached a hand to run through his hair as a silent apology for the teasing after.
‘Hikaru’ relaxed at the gentle caress of his hair, letting out a sigh before leaning his head down to rest on his shoulder once more.
After a moment of petting his hair he pulled away just for a moment to lean over and grab the manga to continue reading.
He held it between them once more, only this time using a hand to run his fingers through ‘Hikaru’s while he held the book with the other.
They began to read where they left off, with ‘Hikaru’ turning the pages since Yoshiki couldn’t.
After a few pages Yoshiki paused reading however, tilting the book away.
“Hey,” He spoke up, catching the other’s attention. “We could do something like this again next weekend… Maybe?”
“Do our nails?” He offered with a growing smile.
Yoshiki hummed in thought for a moment before lifting the book back between them with a smile.
“Sure, I think my mom has some nail polish lying around somewhere.”
